Any backpacker who has spent much time in the U.S. knows this already. There is not much of a hostel structure in the United States. You are mostly limited to cheap motels and crashing at someone’s house. An article just came out on the discrepency: “U.S. Hostels Pale Next to European Rivals.”
They put it all down to public transportation, but I would say restrictive development laws don’t help much either…
