Naval Academy & CBBC Wedding | Abby Grace Photography

A few weeks ago I took hold of the beautiful weather and the fact that my little brothers were on spring break and decided to take them to Annapolis. After wandering downtown for a bit they told me that they had never been to the Naval Academy! Well this Bayside Bride editor just couldn’t bear the thought, so we turned our afternoon into a tour day. Every time I’m there, I am amazed at the gem of a place that lies our city’s bounds. The beautiful buildings all done in the classically ornate Beaux-Arts and sweeping waterfront views. This sounds a little ridiculous, but make sure you take the chance to be a tourist in your own city every once in a while.

Today’s wedding by Abby Grace captures the academy’s beauty in ceremony photographs and as the backdrop to bridal portraits. And even in such a setting, this couple outshines their surroundings! This entire day looks like it was ripped from the glossy pages of an Annapolis Wedding magazine. Abby tells us that so many aspects of this wedding were DIYed, which is hard to believe since everything looks so immaculate! All of it was due to the handmade efforts of the bride and her fantastic team of vendors (many of which can be found in our vendor guide )

Abby shared that,”David & Heather’s wedding day was perfect, despite the chilly weather outside. Heather is a DIY queen and made sure the reception was dripping with handmade details, and the bride herself has never looked more radiant! I love all of the sweet details that made their wedding a true reflection of who they are- the mason jars were a nod to David’s growing up with him mom’s homemade canned jams, and the brooches in Heather’s bouquet were from her grandmother.”

A Three-Part Indian Wedding in NYC: The Ceremony

Lusting for more beautiful eye-candy from Nitasha and Amar’s wedding?  Yesterday we shared the colorful Sangeet, and today we’re back with the beautiful ceremony and reception posts.  {Both AH-MAZ-INGLY photographed by Tara Sharma Photography }!

The second part of Nitasha and Amar’s wedding was a Hindu ceremony and was based on a temple theme. It incorporated brass temple bells in the décor, and white plumeria flowers covered the aisle. Nitasha and Amar both grew up in Long Island and spent a lot of time in New York City. Their families are from India, and wanted the wedding to capture the sensibilities of our roots as well as the charm of New York. By doing so, they had both by holding a traditional ceremony at the historic Hempstead House overlooking the Long Island Sound, and celebrate in the evening amidst the artistic beauty of the museum for the reception.

The couple wanted to find interesting ways to combine East and West, such as presenting the wedding favor bags, which were block printed with a traditional plumeria motif on the baby grand piano in the foyer of the house. They chose to use natural fiber paper and twine for our programs and favor bags in keeping with the organic beauty of the location.

Nitasha wore a vintage silk sari that her mother wore on her wedding day. It was fuchsia with antique gold “zardosi” embroidery and beading, accompanied by antique family jewelry and traditional jewelry gifted by the groom’s parents. The bridesmaids wore traditional cream saris, designed by “Deepti & Sunaina” {Hyderabad, India} with bold antique gold accents and jewel toned jewelry.

Amar wore a traditional sherwani in cream and antique gold with fuchsia and emerald green accents by Indian designer, Sagar Tenali.

The most eye-popping portion of the ceremony had to be the groom’s procession including an adorable elephant and a fusion brass band.

The altar itself was designed by the mother of the bride and created by a team of carpenters and florists. It included antique gold voile fabric, brass bells, and a natural arrangement of fuchsia and orange flowers, ivory hydrangeas, and deep red plum branches, so as to be a part of the rose garden setting.  Romantic wrought-iron candelabras covered with flowers flanked the aisle.

The floral elements were in fuchsia and saffron hues to accent the jewel tones of antique Rajasthani pieces. Nitasha and Amar wanted to bring in a flavor of India while still highlighting the beauty of the Gatsby-era estate.

The most memorable moment for the bride and groom was when the rain momentarily stopped and the sun shone as they walked down the aisle.

“My favorite photo was a candid shot taken on a Brooklyn street,” said Nitasha. “When our plans to take photos at Brooklyn Bridge Park were foiled by weather and traffic, we seized the chance to enjoy an unexpected moment of quiet in an unusual spot outside of a local deli!”

A Three-Part Indian Wedding in NYC: The Reception

If you have been following Nitasha and Amar’s Sangeet and ceremony on Merci New York, then you are probably thinking that the reception will follow the same colorful, beautiful vibe that you’ve seen in posts past… and you are right!  For the third part of the wedding, Nitasha and Amar had their reception at The Brooklyn Museum . The venue incorporated the bride and groom’s vision of creating an art deco- speakeasy theme…. and it was BEYOND.  Take a peek!

The floral elements included elevated wrought-iron arrangements of deep purple, pale green, and ivory, as well as candles with a damask motif. Soft lavender lighting was used in the inner court of the space, and amber lighting used in the surrounding space to highlight the European art lining the walls. Guests were also invited to trickle into the Egyptian gallery during the evening. The bride and groom wanted to create an inviting space for guests to mingle, while allowing the works of art to take center stage, especially since Amar and Nitasha do not enjoy spotlight!

The cocktail hour took place in the glass and brick pavilion of The Brooklyn Museum . Nitasha and Amar chose simple amber-hued lighting and candles to accent the Rodin statues. Guests found their place cards on an antique map of European cities.

The long bar was flanked by antique urns with floral arrangements including deep purple callalilies with pale green and white accents. The ambiance and fusion-jazz quartet made for a fun speakeasy vibe.

For the reception, Nitasha wore a pale gold chiffon sari-gown with crystal accents by Indian designer, Gaurav Gupta and art deco inspired necklace and earrings from “Krsala” {Hyderabad, India}.   Amar wore a black Ralph Lauren suit with wool tie by Bruer, accented with a Jaeger le Coultre watch and Moustache cufflinks, which were a gift from his bride.

The cake was a four tier chocolate with hazelnut ganache cake, cream with pale green accents, fresh purple calla lilies, and a whimsical elephant cake-topper.  Wedding favors were customized tins of “gifts from the grandmas”- Nitasha’s grandmother’s chilli spice, and Amar’s grandmother’s regional tea leaves. To pair with the design of the cake, sugar cookies were served in an elephant design to keep with the theme.

And after planning all three parts of the event, Nitasha and Amar have quite a lot of wonderful memories to treasure.

Their best advise for brides and grooms to be?  “Have a clear idea of which parts of the day matter most to you, and don’t worry too much about the rest,” said the bride.

Sweet Beachside Engagement | Beth Hamilton

When we say sweet, we mean sweet! Some of our favorite images from this engagement session were taken outside of the Candy Kitchen and along the water’s edge in Virginia Beach. What could possibly scream “we want sun” more than a timeless stroll down the boardwalk? This engagement session by Beth Hamilton has us dreaming of summer nights and day trips to the ocean. As much as we love the bay, there’s something about the warm sand in your toes that just does one’s heart good. With Brandon in the Navy and Anna teaching elementary students in South Carolina- VA Beach was the perfect meeting spot for these two over their spring breaks!

Royal Blue & Hot Pink Wedding | Kristi Odom

We are so full of praises for this beautiful affair shot by Kristi Odom ! The bridal party may just be the happiest looking bunch we’ve ever seen and paired with the cheery hot pink and blue accents, how could this wedding be anything less than amazing? From the dreamy lighting in the bridal portraits to the several hysterical photo bombs that happened throughout the day we think that the bride is spot-on in saying that, “It was the perfect combination of one of the most romantic days of my life and also the most fun, epic party I had ever been to.”

This wedding also illuminated a fun new tradition for us here at bayside- we think everyone ought to be doing it! The groom’s grandfather was a member of the French calvary so the bride was asked to slice a croquembouche—a traditional French cake made of cream puffs—with a saber. Take a look at the croquembouche falling under Cate’s swing!
