Ok guys, jot down the following directions before I forget them. Head right down Nile Street (in Nelson) and turn left into the Matai Valley Road. You’ll pass a couple of beautiful reserves and the entrance to the gorgeous 9-hole Waahi Taakaro Golf Course, before turning into the camping grounds on your right. You’re about to embark on a wonderful scenic walk/ mountain bike ride. Here’s Michael poring over an outdated map, unaware of the detailed signage sitting directly behind him.
…the sign tells you all you need to know :
These trails are full of lovely and unexpected surprises – trees, plump with ripening fruit….
..the soothing sound of a chuckling river.
We meet plenty of serious Mountain Bikers and joggers on the way and they’re extremely respectful of the walkers they pass. Like us, these guys just want to keep fit, experience nature and share the fun wherever they can. Hey, look at this..the trail meanders around the side of the hills and suddenly the most spectacular valley appears…
..with panoramic views of the Waahi Taakaro Golf Course below us:
The walking trail option we took was not really that challenging but looking into the distance I can see that the Mountain Bike track winds very steeply around the hills. Can’t hear much talking now. It’s heads down and tails up. Those guys are keen!
Before we head back for some lunch, Michael’s keen to show that yes, he knew about that signage all along……yeah right.
