This week, streaming leaders Spotify announced a new content partnership with L.A. site ATTN , which will see it premiering a video series exploring the roots of music culture. It’s made its surprise online debut today in the form of an incisive look at where dance culture grew from, with a new video described as “a brief history of the social and political origins of EDM.”
“EDM has grown into one of the music world’s biggest genres, topping the charts and headlining festivals across the globe. But it’s rooted in humble beginnings,” Spotify asserts.
Deconstructing: How EDM Changed the World then proceeds to offer a surprisingly illuminating history of dance culture over its lightning-swift two-minute running time.
Beginning with Frankie Knuckles’ late ‘70s adventures in Chicago, it continues onto the “Belleville Three” of Juan Atkins , Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson as they “channeled their frustration and decay” into the formation of the Detroit techno sound.
It’s an impressive effort for a two-minute deep-dive. While the remaining Deconstructing episodes will need to be viewed on the Spotify app, you can watch the first episode below.
