How a Long Term Traveller Packs for a Trip

“Are we ready to leave for the Problogger Event in Melbourne tomorrow?”

Craig and I were doing an early morning beach walk before getting started on our day’s work. We were flying at 8am the next morning to go to Melbourne for 2 nights. It was going to be Savannah’s first flight. Kalyra would be staying home with Nan and Pop.

I was starting to worry that maybe we weren’t organized (snicker- like we ever are).

Confused Craig replied, “What do you mean? We’ve got the flight tickets, the accommodation is confirmed and we know what we are going to talk about.”

We had spent time the previous day going over what we wanted to say in our interview.

“I don’t know. I just keep seeing everyone’s tweets on the #pbevent hashtag stream about how they are getting organized, or don’t have anything organized, and they have checklists and it’s starting to worry me that we are not prepared.”

“Nah, we’ve got it covered.”

And we do. We’ve done this over and over and over again.

How a Long Term Traveller Packs for a Trip

How are you packing?

I could pack today to leave tomorrow on a year long journey around the world and wouldn’t stress about it.

That is the beauty of being a perpetual nomad, you get used to and are comfortable blowing with the wind.

Our train to the station was leaving at 5am, by 6pm the previous night nothing was packed. I didn’t even know what I was going to be wearing on stage.

I did a quick run down the street and bought an outfit before going to dinner for my bro-in-laws birthday.

At 10pm we packed.

Flight tickets? check

Accommodation confirmation? Check

Notes? check

Clothes/undies/dress/makeup/toiletries? check check check

Camera/lap top? check check

Anything else?

As long as we have the tickets, we don’t have to worry.

You soon learn that when you are travelling all you really need are the bare essentials. If you forget something else, you’ll be right.

Phew- no packing stress from us.

It’s a bit like a conversation we had with someone recently, just before I gave birth to Savannah, about our future travel plans .

“So when are you ready to leave on this trip?”

“Like now. We could leave tomorrow.”

“Whaaaat? Don’t you have a few things you have to do first?”

“Well yeah. But we’re cool to leave once Savannah is born. No problem”

I think they thought we were insane.

No, this comes as naturally to us as breathing, that’s all.
