It’s that time of year again, and with the industry gathered in the Dutch capital for the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) , last night UK dance media veterans DJ Mag held the awards ceremony for their Top 100 poll, which happens to be the world’s largest music ballot. Surprising few, young Dutch Prodigy Martin Garrix took away the #1 spot for the first time.

Garrix took the crown from Belgian upstarts Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike , who had won a rather controversial #1 in last year’s poll and slid down to a respectable #2 this year. The ceremony took place at the Heineken Music Hall, where Garrix was awarded his trophy by former winner Tiësto , who himself neatly slid into the #5 spot.

“It feels unreal to have won,” Garrix said in a press release after the event. “I 100 percent did not expect it at all. I’ve had an amazing year, with awesome shows and amazing fans—I’m so thankful for their support. It just shows how dope the fanbase is.”

In a surprise move, DJ Mag also introduced their first-ever “tech-leaning” top 50 list, featuring the top-ranking DJs in the poll on the house and techno side of things, topped out in its first year by Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and Umek. It’s seemingly DJ Mag’s response to the outrage that often greets the poll’s results, and the fact that many of techno’s biggest players are excluded.
