If you are not one for hiking in a full boot and don't require that extra ankle support, KEEN has created the Bryce WP to offer you all the weather and foot protection you need on the trail without the extra bulk. These light hikers have been my trusty trail companion all over Utah, Northern California, and Oregon during the past month.
The Bryce WP light hikers feature a waterproof treated nubuck leather upper that will be your first barrier against the elements as well as keeping dirt from getting inside your boots. A further waterproof breathable membrane (the company's own KEEN.Dry membrane) lines the inside of the boots to keep moisture out while working to expel your sweat at the same time. This full waterproof light hiking boot might be overkill if you are planning to only hike in hot and dry climates, but if you are heading anywhere wet, you will appreciate the extra protection.
The non-marking rubber outsole uses multi-directional lugs that dig into the trail for ample traction whether you're going uphill or down. I wore them hiking over a large variety of terrain and never had a problem with slipping. I even did a little scrambling in my light hikers.
The Bryce WP weighs 17 oz. (men's) and 13.5 oz. (women's- compare that to 10.5 oz. for the Tecnica Dragon X-Lite ) so they are not the lightest hikers out there but are sturdy and durable. The boots offer the traditional KEEN toe protection with an EVA midsole and TPU shank that work together to create a stable underfoot platform.
I found the Bryce WP fit similar to other hiking boots. KEEN recommends you order a half size up but this didn't seem to be an issue for me. I had no problems with blisters or hot spots wearing the boots right out of the box. I would recommend double knotting the laces, however, as they seem to come undone quite easily.
Bottom Line: If you are looking for a workhorse hiker on the trails this fall but don't want a full boot style, check out the Bryce WP.
The KEEN Bryce WP light hikers come in a variety of colors for both men and women, retailing at $125. KEEN also makes a mid version for those of you looking for a little more ankle support.
