El Zócalo in Mexico City is the huge plaza in the historic center, also known as La Plaza de la Constitución. It’s normally bustling with pedestrians in the middle, cars on the perimeter, and protestors carrying placards about some injustice at least once a week. It’s also a staging center for concerts, events, commercials, and movies, so it’s a rare treat to find it completely empty. I was lucky enough to be there as the year’s Christmas tree was being removed (even though it was the third week of January.) So as I walked across on a Sunday morning to go catch a tour out of town, I was mostly just sharing the space with a clean-up crew. Later it would be bustling, but this was the quiet time.
