This week’s #FriFotos theme is “special moments.” A theme that’s open to interpretation, and that I enjoyed as I sifted through my photos.
Travel, to me, is special moment after special moment — but some moments rise above all and become the moments you’ll remember decades later. Here are a few of my favorites:
The moment of freefall as you jump from the top of a tall ship into the water, much higher than you’ve ever dreamed of attempting before — in Halong Bay, Vietnam.
The moment when you realize that everyone in town can see your underwear — in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
Moments of culinary bliss like this, the first of five sensational courses — in Castel del Rio, Italy.
The unexpected moment when you duck into a doorway to escape an aggressive dog — and end up making several wacky new friends — in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.
Moments of unspeakable perfection, like crossing the desert at sunrise atop a camel, the colors changing vividly each minute — in Wadi Rum, Jordan.
Moments of supreme accomplishment — like after climbing to the summit of Mount Snowdon, Wales.
Those moments when it’s just you on your motorbike in front of an endless road, not a single Westerner around for miles — in Saraven Province, Laos.
The moment you realize it’s 2:00 AM and you have to wake up to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat in two hours and definitely shouldn’t still be drinking at ANGKOR WHAT?! bar — in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The moment you take to heed the advice from The Color Purple and take a moment to admire the purple flowers in spite of the fact that you’ve lost almost all of your possessions — in Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia.
The hilarious moment when you wake up in the morning, take a look at your camera to see what happened last night — and remember that you became BFFs with one of the local trannies! — in Ao Nang, Thailand.
And there are so many moments that play with your sense of disbelief.
Am I really here, standing between these absolutely gorgeous snow-covered Alps? — in Innsbruck, Austria.
Am I really here, floating above the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia? — in Goreme, Turkey.
Am I really here, tubing down the Mekong, that legendary river of Asia? — in Don Det, Si Phan Don, Laos.
When you travel, moments like this happen every day. So use this as your Friday inspiration. Get out there and explore. However you’d like. Fly to the other side of the world, book your family package holidays to Florida , or just drive 30 minutes to a town you’ve never visited. Make some special moments of your own.
