In the past on this blog I’ve talked about the attractive incentives some countries throw out there to encourage retirees or investors to come live in their country. Most of the best ones are in Central America, but there are some nice goodies on offer from places you might not think of right away, such as Malaysia and Malta.
Here’s another odd one that’s getting quite aggressive: Macedonia . If you’re like most people, you probably can’t find the place on a map, so a recent ad in the Wall Street Journal helpfully puts a map right in there for you. It’s a landlocked country immediately north of Greece and surrounded by such economic powerhouses as Bulgaria, Serbia, and Albania. (You may not want to start off by opening a luxury boutique hotel). Here’s the thing though: they really want you to invest your money there. Here’s what they’re offering:
– Lowest flat tax on profit and income in Europe
– An average 3-day company registration
– A 10-year tax holiday in free trade zones
– A national wi-fi infrastructure
The latter might come as a shock to some rural residents with no running water, but hey, you can hire them at an average of 370 euros per month according to the ad. If you’ve always wanted to open that hip backpacker place in a country that’s off the radar, this may be your chance. See investmacedonia.com .
