I have a slight obsession with sand . If I can always see it or touch it, I feel that much more connected to the ocean. Non-ocean people might think I’m crazy but you seafaring folk know exactly what I’m talking about. I love having it in vases all around the house and usually there are seashells or candles sitting in the sand… but I saw this picture and knew that I had to make this happen for Valentine’s Day. So I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and share this special trick so that you could easily recreate this gorgeous display and not end up with dead flowers! This is a wonderful idea for a beach-chic event of any kind whether it’s your bridal shower or your wedding.
I know that I use the term obsessed a lot, but that doesn’t even come close to how I feel about this centerpiece idea!
SUPPLIES:
- floral water tubes
- glass vases of any size
- gorgeous flowers (ours are campanella garden roses)
- play sand
- scissors
Let’s talk about sand. Please don’t “repurpose” sand from the park or the beach, it has nasty bacteria and yucky things living in it that you don’t want in your beautiful vases. 50 pounds of play sand is only $5 at your local hardware store. It’s clean and perfect for this project and all sand projects, it’s actually meant to fill kids play areas.
Floral Water Tube Tip:
Most floral water tubes have a little spike at the bottom that aids in floral arranging. The problem is that it extends the tube by almost 2 inches, meaning it might not fit into some vases the way we want to use them, so snip it off. This part doesn’t hold water so it’s all good.
I didn’t want the leaves showing so I snipped them. Then I snipped the stem to fit into the water tube.
Fill the water tube with water either under a faucet or by dipping into a bowl of water like I’m doing here. Insert the stem through the hole in the tube top and your flower is ready!
This should be enough water to last a large rose for 48 hours.
Then simply bury the tube in the sand. Fluff the flower a bit to make sure it looks voluminous and gorgeous like this one.
That’s all it takes to make this centerpiece.
Adding candle light is simple, just bury votives or tea lights in the sand.
This project really is that simple. Add gorgeous flowers to water tubes, bury in the sand and display!
When the flowers finally die, take them out of the tubes and simply add new flowers!
