For those of us that like to camp outdoors year round, this can mean an entire closet full of sleeping bags. Even on a single trip, you normally have to carry one bag rated to the lowest temperature you will encounter, creating the potential for some hot nights on the trail. To make trail life simpler, Kammok has a designed a modular sleeping bag that lets you endlessly customize your bag to match every condition.
The Kammok Thylacine sleeping bag uses an interchangeable baffle system that lets you add or subtract fill to change the warmth rating. The baffles can be filled with synthetic (PrimaLoft Gold) insulation, down blend (PrimaLoft 750) insulation, or a hybrid of both types.
A special locking feature keeps the baffles properly positioned inside the baffle chamber to prevent cold spots. The downproof baffle shell fabric is quilted in order to minimize the migration of insulation. By simply removing or adding baffles to the baffle chambers, you can create the customized temperature rating you need for your planned adventure.
Custom width and length adjustments enable you to get rid of any dead space in cold weather or give you a little more room if you are a restless sleeper. The footbed adjustment allows the bag length to be resized 3" – 5", while five body adjustments allow you to customize the width of the bag at several critical points: chest, hips, thighs, knees, and ankles.
The Thylacine sleeping bag comes in both an Ultralight and Expedition version. The Ultralight shell is made from DWR treated 10D ripstop nylon, while the Expedition shell adds an eVent waterproof membrane. The uninsulated base shells can be used as either a summer bag or a waterproof bivy.
Adding baffle layers to the regular Ultralight shell takes the sleeping bag from a 65° rating down to a -5° rating, and from 516 grams up to 1565 grams. The regular size Expedition shell is rated for 60° and weighs 573 grams, while adding three layers of down blend baffles will drop the rating down to -5° and up the weight to 1746 grams.
Kammok is currently taking pre-orders for the modular Thylacine sleeping bag over on Kickstarter. For $200, you can get an Ultralight shell with 1 layer of synthetic baffles for a 40° sleeping bag. For $650, you can get an Expedition shell with three layers of down baffles for a -5° sleeping bag. There are many variations offered in between those two levels.
