Play ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ for the Sampling Generation

The WhoSampled database has become the go-to source in recent years for ravers seeking to identify where that obscure yet familiar sample in their favorite record came from. The site is now offering a special new way to see how our favorite artists are connected in the ether of the sampling realm, launching its own special Six Degrees of Music Separation Game.

To play the game, all you have to do is enter the names of two different artists—or otherwise celebrities, actors or politicians—and the game will tell you the surprising ways they’re connected. And there are certainly plenty of surprises on offer.

To start with, the game offers up the suggestion of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton . It turns out Obama’s inaugural address was sampled by Trife , who sampled LL Cool J , who had collaborated with Jennifer Lopez , who in turn had sampled a speech by Clinton in one of her records. Wow.

We tried the seemingly unlikely combination of mainstage powerhouse Hardwell with deep house gurus Dusky , though there were only three degress of separation between them. Hardwell had collaborated with Arty , who had himself collaborated with Above & Beyond on their “You Got to Believe” mashup, with that trio having been remixed by Dusky.

See for yourself what random connections you can dig up by playing the Six Degrees of Music Separation Game over at WhoSampled .
