Brace yourself for weird. It was just earlier this month that we had our attention drawn to Mubert , an algorithm with the ability to continuously produce electronic music in real time, and now researchers from Sony have unveiled the first two songs composed completely by AI.
The two songs are composed using the FlowMachines system, software developed by Sony that analyzes musical styles from a huge database of songs, exploiting different combinations of “style transfer, optimization and interaction techniques” in creating music.
The result is somewhat like a musical equivalent of the “uncanny valley,” with the songs getting so close to replicating genuine human musicality, yet still so very far. “Mr Shadow” in particular takes things down a very weird path. Listen to the strangeness below.
