Whenever possible, scout the area before you go hunting. You need to start your trip by thinking like a deer. Eating, drinking, mating, and defecating is essentially their daily routine, but the question you need to ask yourself is, “When, where, and what?”
Depending on the time of year, you certainly will find indicators and evidence of where they were and when.
There are two basic things to keep in mind. First of all, deer groups are regularly all female, and second, that same group usually travels to different areas in a 30-mile range. Also, know that where deer groups are, bucks follow soon enough.
As you explore the areas for your next hunting trip, make sure not to focus on a particular animal; just concentrate on deer in general.
Search for Deer Favorite Places
Whether you believe it or not, one of the greatest places to find deer is not the woods; it is usually in agricultural fields, such as corn, soybeans, and fruit.
Of course, this only applies during harvest time. The rest of the year, they should be in an area where there is an abundance of acorns falling or berries growing wildly.
Deer also feed on herbs, grass, leaves, shoots, stems, and mushrooms. Find these food sources and you will surely find deer.
Look for Patterns
There are amazing places to hunt in the U.S. , but despite the place you choose, you must learn how to read the signs. One trick you can apply when you are hunting in farm areas is to follow a trail that runs parallel to a field, right into the wild. That will be a feeding trail. While it does not ensure success, it is a good start.
Pay Attention to the Weather
Deer don’t eat as much and are much less active during cold weather. If it is freezing, they regularly go into the thick woods to avoid cold winds. Regardless of how cold it is, deer will always need water. If you find their source of water, you will increase your possibilities of finding them.
