“When the words came to me for ‘We Are Phuture,’ I had no idea how relevant and true they would become.” So says Chicago pioneer DJ Pierre this week, with the news that the legendary single he produced alongside the late and great DJ Spank-Spank as Phuture will be reissued for its incoming 30th anniversary, including a remix from Spank himself.
“My friend ‘Spank Spank’ of over 30 years is no longer with us in body, but he is here in spirit. He is here in the music,” says Pierre, who formed Phuture alongside Spank in the mid ‘80s and infamously used a Roland 303 to produce the first-ever acid house track.
“A few years after acid house reached its peak, people gave up on it. They said acid was dead. Spanky and I refused to believe that. So I wrote the words to this song. It was in direct defiance to people wanting to put us and the movement to rest,” he says. “The words of survival in this song could not be any more true. This is in dedication to you, my friend. Sleep well. We will forever be Phuture, and Phuture will always survive in our music. Love and Respect, always.”
In addition to the 2016 Mix, the reissue of “We Are Phuture” will include both a remix from DJ Pierre and a special “Spanky's Spirit Survives Mix” from the man himself.
Phuture’s “We Are Phuture” arrives on Beatport on October 17; listen to the previews below.
