How’s this for meta? One of the biggest pop-culture successes this year has been Netflix series Stranger Things , an adventure set in the early ‘80s and inspired by classics from the decade by Spielberg and Stephen King.
The show’s eerie syth-drenched soundtrack struck a chord with viewers, the mesmerising work of Texan group S U R V I V E who channelled pioneers from the era like Tangerine Dream . And now, that very same seminal German group has itself returned to provide its own rendition of the Stranger Things soundtrack that they inspired in the first place.
Dropping the renditions on the Tangerine Dream SoundCloud along with a few strategic winks to signify the playful nature of the exercise, the renditions manage to take the lush retro stylings of the soundtrack, and render them even more retro still.
The pioneering synth group enjoyed an illustrious career since forming in the late 60s, which saw them provide the soundtrack for ‘80s cinema classics like Blade Runner, plus the film adaption of Stephen King’s Firestarter (itself heavily referenced in Stranger Things).
