Best known for their incredibly warm sleeping bags, comfortable sleeping pads, and innovative tent designs, Big Agnes has now ventured into the world of apparel. The new DownTek Jackets not only look incredibly cool (the compliments will be flowing), but will keep you warm and comfortable this winter.
Stuffed with 700 fill power DownTek water repellent down, the Shovelhead Hooded Jacket does not so much as bat an eye in a heavy wet snowstorm. I have worn this jacket both ice climbing (in -20°F) and skiing in dumping snow and never had to worry about it losing warmth power because of the down getting wet.
Much like the sleeping bags, Big Agnes uses Insotect Flow vertical baffles in their down jackets which not only look great, but keep the down from shifting so you ultimately stay warmer. The ripstop nylon shell is wind and water resistant, with a nice gloss finish that pops against the contrasting neon accents and liner.
The cut is very slim and contoured, meaning it is flattering versus the usual puffy Michelin man look. The fit is true to size. A medium works for me as an outer layer with a layer or two underneath. If you want to use the Shovelhead as a belay jacket, you should probably order one size up.
You have plenty of storage options with two zip hand warmer pockets, two inner mesh pockets (great for storing gloves and sunglasses), and an internal zip pocket for your phone or camera. The hood cinches down for a little extra protection during inclement weather.
Bottom Line: The Shovelhead Hooded Jacket not only looks fabulous around town, but the water resistant down helps to keep you warmer when out playing in the snow and ice. What more could you ask for?
The men's and women's Big Agnes Shovelhead Hooded Jacket retails for $249.95 and is available now.
