I love outdoor weddings and events. Especially in the late spring and early summer, being outdoors, celebrating and relaxing as the sun is going down is such a wonderful feeling. Over the past few years, as outdoor wedding popularity has grown, we’ve seen an increase in wonderful ways to display flowers al fresco. One of my favorites has been the garden stake with a glass bottle tied to it. So I thought I would tackle this project and bring you a simple how-to that can be deemed a “craft-win” for anyone who tries it, no matter their crafty skill level. These would look amazing at a beach wedding, a farm wedding, winery wedding, a forest wedding… ok, pretty much any outdoor wedding theme – but of course the beach is my choice! You can incorporate your theme simply by using flowers, the color of bottle or color of yarn. Cheers to DIY friday and a crafty weekend ahead!
SUPPLIES:
- Krylon Frosted Glass Paint
- Glass Soda Bottles
- 5′ x 1 1/4″ Bamboo Stakes
- Glue Dots Sheets
- Yarn
- Scissors

I purchased these awesome glass soda bottles from Michaels but they needed a more romantic look, so I sprayed them with frosted glass paint. If scratched hard enough, the frosted paint can come off. You can also get the same effect (but for good) by etching the bottles with etching cream, or you can paint them any color you’d like.
When I was prepping this project I found the “tying” step below incredibly annoying and somewhat difficult. I wanted the bottle to be at a specific spot on the stake and I wanted the yarn wrap to look perfect, but I was having trouble. So I thought – why not add some Glue Dots to the bottle so that it would stick to the stake and solve my problem? Turns out it worked perfectly!!!
I cut strips of the Glue Dots sheet and applied them to the bottle – then pressed the bottle to the stake. These sheets have an incredible hold but are also repositionable, in case you change your mind about placement.
**This step is optional but it made the project SO much easier!
Tie The Bottle To The Stake
Let the top half of the bottle and stake hang off the edge of a table. Tightly wrap the bottle and stake about 8 times around and tie a firm knot. Cut excess.
**This was the part I found the most difficult without the help of the Glue Dots sheet. My bottle and stake kept rolling and moving around, and it was hard to keep a firm grip on the yarn.
Now move your bottle and stake further off the table and wrap the bottom of the bottle, same as above, about 8 times and tie a firm knot. Done!
Bottle vs. Stake Size
The size of this 5′ x 1 1/4″ stake worked perfectly with this 9″ x 2 1/2″ bottle. This project can be done with any size bottle, but you’ll need to make sure that the diameter of the stake will support the weight of the bottle once placed in the ground. For example if you want to use a wine bottle, I suggest a stake that has a diameter around 2″ – if you want to use a tiny spice jar or sauce bottle, a 1/2″ stake diameter will do just fine.
