We’ve all seen the Mason jar trend utilized in many different ways for wedding décor. In fact, that’s what makes it so popular – it’s versatility. Use a mason jar as a vase for floral arrangements at your wedding reception and you’ve instantly added a rustic touch to any table scape. Or hand out tiny jars of canned preserves for a country inspired wedding favor. You can even hang mason jars filled with flowers on stakes and then line the walkway of your outdoor wedding ceremony with them. All of these ideas give off a whimsical and bucolic vibe on your special day.

But as the weather grows colder and the season shifts, so do the trends in popular wedding décor. Since Mason jars have been on the scene for a while now, many are left asking, “What is the new trend in wedding décor and how can I implement it into the style of my wedding?” According to Margo Fisher, professional event planner and owner of Bright Occasions Wedding Planning & Coordination that serves DC, Maryland, and Virginia, the next big thing in wedding décor is mercury glass. “I have been seeing a transition from rustic weddings to a more glam style wedding” says Margo. “Mercury glass has replaced mason jars as the go-to item because like the Mason jar, it is very versatile and works in many different styles”.
Mercury glass is the common term for glass that has a silvery finish or a finish that looks shiny like a mirror. First made popular in England in the 1840s, today it is seeing a resurgence in popularity. Many items, including vases and decorative goblets, can be found at common, relatively inexpensive retailers like Pottery Barn, Ikea or Pier One Imports. So how exactly would you use these pieces as part of your wedding décor? According to Margo, there are many different ways mercury glass can add a hint of glam and glimmer to your special day.

“I really like mercury glass because it adds an instant sparkle and glow to your tables”, Margo says. “One of my couples created their own centerpieces made from mercury glass votives and succulents. For favors, I wrapped all of the succulent centerpieces in organza bags and gave them to the guest as they were leaving the reception. Another couple recently incorporated mercury glass and burlap. The tables had burlap runners set beneath mercury glass vases, some adorned with mercury glass candles and others with white hydrangeas. These pieces made the feel of the wedding very rustic chic and rustic glam”.
So if you’re looking to move past the Mason jar craze, then mercury glass is perfect for you! Try mixing mercury glass vases with flowers or greenery for a glam touch to a cold weather wedding. Or use varying sizes of mercury glass pillars with candles to create a romantic ambiance. All of the available mercury glass décor options are sure to add glitz, glamour, and beauty to any wedding!
