An Earthy, Yet Elegant DIY Ranch Wedding

Whew! I'm trying to work fast because I am seriously behind after being out of town this past weekend! I went to Vegas with two of my girlfriends, and we had a good (/ crazy) time partying our booties off. We had so much fun, in fact, that I'm planning on squeezing in a Vegas-inspired post at some point this week once I'm all caught up on things again - so stay tuned in for that! :)

But now, it's time to get down to "business" (if you can call this beautiful wedding that). California wedding photographer Diana Maire submitted this rustic real wedding, which she loved not only for its inspirational details, but for the couple, Danny and Sheena's efforts to include their friends and family in the entire wedding planning process. Diana's husband was also in the wedding party, which gave her a "...great excuse to boss her husband around during the group portraits" ;)

Today's newly married couple was very inspired by their expansive ranch wedding venue, which was a "gift" from one of their close friends (GREAT friend, huh?) to create an elegant, rustic affair that highlighted the lovely greens and browns of their natural surroundings. "We wanted to have a beautiful, yet relaxed wedding, which is why none of the groomsmen nor Danny wore ties. We wanted people to feel comfortable and have a good time celebrating and dancing [with us]," said the bride, Sheena.

However, Sheena and Danny were faced with a huge challenge that many couples face when planning the wedding of their dreams - working within a tight budget. In order to capture their vision of a rustic, ranch wedding, the couple worked closely with friends and family on several DIY projects, which saved them "a lot" of money. And let me tell you, when I say "several," I mean it! I think it's actually more difficult to figure out what isn't handmade by the couple and their family, than what is! For that reason, I decided it might be easier for you guys to follow if I just list the DIY projects, like the bride did for me!

  • I'm starting off this list with my absolute favorite "DIY" idea (well, maybe it's not technically "DIY," but man, is it resourceful!)...Rather than shelling out the big bucks for their flowers, Danny and Sheena actually went to their local ROP (Regional Occupational Program), where they train high school and post-high school students in different trades, specifically floristry. The couple just had to pay a small fee, and the students took care of the rest! One of the smartest ideas I've heard in a while. Seriously.

  • The ceremony programs, which were fans to help keep the guests cool while sitting in the sun, were all made by the groom, Danny's, sister-in-law.

  • After the wedding ceremony, guests were directed to the reception with wooden signs that were all handmade by the couple, and Sheena had all of the table assignments printed and placed inside large vintage style frames that were hung on a large willow tree beside the dining area.

  • The table centerpieces consisted of elegant green and ivory floral arrangements placed inside wooden cylinders made using old beams from Danny's father's shop that they drilled holes into. Sheena placed the floral arrangements on top of pieces of burlap that she had cut and placed in the center of each of the reception tables, which were set beside the table numbers, handpainted by Danny's mom and then placed inside euycalyptus branches cut into disks.

  • Guests received green homemade soaps as wedding favors, which were stamped with the couple's newly shared last initial, "L" and placed inside little burlap pouches tied with twine (sewn by Danny's mom).

  • In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, Danny and Sheena served an array of their favorite desserts including pies by Gizdich Ranch , flourless chocolate cake, cheesecake, cookies and bars baked by the couple's friends and family.

  • I included a photo of the fabulous beer and wine bar set up, which was also built by the groom and his brother, along with the dance floor and its surrounding lighting.

"One of the things I loved most was that I think our wedding was truly a family affair. All of our family and friends chipped in to help; whether it was doing hair and makeup, photography, the band (my sister), baking desserts, etc. The only people involved in the wedding who we didn't have a personal relationship with were the DJ and caterer. Everyone else, including the officiant, were special friends or family of ours. It made the day that much more special that everyone chipped in to help," said Sheena. Crazy right?! This is real proof that you can pull off something amazing by really thinking about what resources you have available to you, and working with your family and friends.

A few more of Sheena's favorite details of their wedding day were her vibrant green shoes (which her mom actually tried to deter her from wearing!), which really popped with her elegant lace wedding gown in photos and showcased her fun and bubbly personality, as well as her and Danny's written vows to one another. Sheena will also remember all of the fabulous speeches made by friends and family, which were filled with "wonderful words...and jokes that had everyone laughing and crying." Sheena also sang for Danny, which was a surprise to many of their guests, who had no idea she could sing!

I'm sure you can guess what Sheena's biggest piece of advice is for her fellow brides out there currently planning their weddings..."I think the advice I would give is to take help from family and friends when they offer it. Danny and I decided to 'DIY' many parts of our wedding, and without the help from our family and friends, we would have been stressed out and probably couldn't have done it all. I really felt like everyone helped the day to go off without a hitch. Be creative if on a budget, too! Many of the projects we did were very inexpensive, or even free because we used many of the resources we already had available to us....I felt by keeping an open, creative mind, we were able to make our vision for our wedding come true despite our budget constraints."

Hi Friends! We coordinated a lovely beach birthday celebration in beautiful Malibu. We designed a tent on the beach and created an indoor-outdoor feeling. I asked Nancy Kaye at Marks Garden to incorporate drift wood and florals and some beach elements but as the party is for a man I didn’t want it to come off too fluffy :)
We used blues, taupe linen and touches of white and Revelry furniture.
But my most favorite decor element was the hand painted lanterns that match the back of the menus and pillows on the couches. The other furniture groupings were on the patios for cocktails and the blankets and pillows surrounded a fire pit where the guests made s’mores late into the evening.  Ahhhhhh one day I dream about having a beach house….Enjoy xox MindyBirthday on the Beach!

Real Engagement Session | Lauren + Jesse at Asbury Park

I really love it when couples dream up out-of-the-box ideas for their engagement session. Case in point? Lauren and Jesse.
Hailing from Northport, New York {that’s on Long Island for you out-of-towners}, the couple craved a engagement-session at a waterfront town that was different than their own. The vintage, kitchy and cool vibe of Asbury Park was unlike anything they had seen – and the team at Infocus NYC Photography did a great job of capturing its photo-worthy backdrops, boardwalks and beachside.

Picks on Paper - Fall Wedding Favors

Labor Day is coming up in just a week and a half, which means that Fall is just around the corner! As a native Californian, I don't have a ton of experience with the Fall season...there are pretty much TWO seasons here - winter and summer - with some small transitions in between. For that reason, Fall has always seemed like such a beautiful, fascinating time of year from way over here on the West coast! It really is gorgeous in some parts of the country, too. My husband and I took a drive through Michigan (his home state) in the Fall a couple of years ago, and the all of the trees and colors are absolutely amazing!

Fall has SO much rustic charm innately built into it, that it was pretty easy (not to mention FUN) to pull together this week's Picks on Paper - Fall wedding favors. There really are so many adorable ideas out there! My Picks are divided into five categories - Jams, Coffee & Mulling Spices , Maple Syrup & Honey, Small Pumpkins & Pumpkin Ale, and Apples of all kinds! Caramel apples, apple pies, apple butter, sparkling and hot apple ciders...you name it! :) Some of my favorite fall wedding favors include the small burlap sacks of fragrant coffee beens (which you can actually learn how to DIY on Ruffled! ), apple roasting kits including apples, caramels and sticks for roasting via SMP , individual pouches of hot apple cider mix and if you're especially talented, you can try your hand at brewing your own special pumpkin ale beer! Or just purchase them and slap a custom label on all of the bottles ;)

Tuesday Shoesday | Badgley Mischka Wedding Shoes, Restyled

Tuesday Shoesday | Badgley Mischka Wedding Shoes, Restyled It’s not very often that I read The Post for wedding style inspiration. However, Page Six shared a super-cute style story on NY 1′s adorable Jamie Shupak today, and I couldn’t help but see a Tuesday Shoesday in action.

The Post’s stylist paired each of Jamie’s girl-in-the-city looks with chic and wedding-worthy Badgley Mischka heels {all of which were all under $250 on Piperlime , mind you}… Proving once again that if bought correctly, wedding shoes can be affordable and extremely re-wearable.

Missoni {for Target} Hits a Homerun | Merci Nest

Missoni {for Target} Hits a Homerun | Merci Nest So I have a confession to make. I don’t normally get caught up in all the “X Designer for Target” hype… I’m certainly no socialite, but it’s been one of those mental roadblocks for me. I never wear my DVF wrap dresses that are several seasons old, I don’t buy print pieces on Gilt Groupe {yes, I know this is obnoxious}, and I kinda feel like luxury brands lose their luster when they mass-produce with Target. To be honest, I’d rather save up for one piece of The Real Deal, you know? Well… I now stand corrected.
The blog world has been abuzz about the soon-to-launch Missoni for Target collection and for once, I’m stoked. Granted, I still think the actual clothing is a little “eh,” but the home goods and accessories are looking pretty darn amazing – and completely in line with the Missoni legacy of dazzling zigzags and chic chevrons. Above and below are some Merci New York-picked Missoni for Target pieces that are perfect for the nesting newlywed or honeymooning bride….
Missoni {for Target} Hits a Homerun | Merci Nest The line will be in-stores and online from September 13th through October 22nd {and is expected to sell out fast}, so be sure to make your shopping list now!
p.s. – We’d love to know: What are your favorite pieces??
p.p.s – still have champagne tastes you can’t quite satiate? Check out this Missoni masterpiece on our Tumblr, Merci Musings .

We're Engaged- J & C

Last Sunday August 14th in our home, during a spectacular home cooked meal, both of us wearing PJ's and sipping wine; Jason proposed.

We're Engaged- J & C

The proposal

Jason decided to cook. He had found a new recipe on his new IPAD 2 and apparently Jason was out to prove that he could be the next 'Food Network Star'. Jason loves gadgets and reality TV. Plus he likes to think he is a better cook than me.

So cook he did. And he made an exquisite meal. I could go into all the details of how he roasted red peppers and tomatoes and pureed them and added ricotta cheese to make the best soup on the planet. Or how he sauteed chicken and paired it with a rich sauce of crushed baby tomatoes and spices. I could elaborate on all that, but then it would seem that Jason is a better cook than me. So I'll just say he cooked dinner.

During dinner Jason asked me to grab a bottle of white wine for the table. I turned around to grab the white wine.

The ring was there but I didn't see it.

As soon as I had the white wine in hand, Jason asked for Baileys. At this point I was pretty sure Jason was considering picking up a drinking habit because who drinks wine and Baileys with dinner? I turned around, a second time, and there next to the bottle of Bailey's sat the ring.

I squealed a little. Ok a lot.

I walked over to him, sat on his lap and then we kinda did a little gazing into eyes. I had to remind the boy that he hadn't actually asked me yet.

We laughed.

He asked.

I was going to say 'no' unless he promised to cook like this every Sunday. But at this point I was wearing the ring and we were both wearing smiles.

We're Engaged- J & C

The ring is a vintage engagement ring that is 100+ years old. It is set in Platinum with a hand crafted Old European Cut diamond. We found it at Weston Fine Jewelry in Bellevue, Seattle.  We chose it because it is vintage and it is a beautiful thing that new life can be given to something so old.

A huge thank you to our talented friend and photographer, Alex Chamas . You can find him on Twitter: handle @amchamas and on FB: FB fan page . Please show him some love. It was so awesome of him to take these pictures for us.

Pike Place Market - Engagement Shoot

This engagement shoot started in the heart of Seattle, in none other than Pike Place Market. Pike Place Market with its architecture, tourists, and outdoor market makes for a colorful and artistic background. These pictures are playful, authentic, and so beautiful. Just look at this couple. Their smiles say it all.

Pike Place Market Engagement Pictures are by Laura March Banks.

Plus I love Julia's (the bride-to-be) fashion raincoat, boots, and the hint of glam in her dress. It shows that Julia works for an agency that does PR for Gilt City Seattle . Which if you live in Seattle, is a must.

Congratulations Julia and Ryan.

Thank you for sharing.

Tuesday Shoesday | Kate Spade Linette Maribou Pump

Tuesday Shoesday | Kate Spade Linette Maribou Pump

Can you say “killer fall wedding shoe?!”

The plum Lisette suede pump from Kate Spade is hands-down one of our favorite finds for fall. The shape. The color. The pure maribou perfection… and the price {a cool $355 as compared to some of our other Tuesday Shoesday finds}… Well, it’s really no wonder Deborah Lloyd’s schnauzer loves them so much {top}.

The shoe comes in both plum and taupe suede. I can’t decide if I love them more for brides or bridesmaids… What are your thoughts?

I love Mario Testino's photos from Kate Moss's wedding that I found in the September issue of Vogue . There are some great moments to take away from this Great Gatsby meets Bohemianaffair. So many romantic details, the flower girl attire (there were 16 of them) and mix of traditional and modern. I loved the natural and backyard home wedding. It did after all take place at Kate Moss'own country home. It had many details that you could incorporate into your own big day. The lovely simpleflowers in a variety of vessels, the fruit wood bentwood chairs, the simple draped tent and vintage chandeliers, and the traditional place cards resting on each napkin. The flowers were by Scarlet & Violet , she wore a gown by long time friend John Galliano and blue soled M anolo Blahnik heels. The event was filled with some of the biggest names in fashion and dressed up in garden attire. The cake was by Peggy Porschen , oh I just love this cake!Paige Boy jacket by Bill Bull, Flowergirls wore Bonpoint . One of my favorite parts of the wedding was the mirrored dressing table they set up with candles. What a romantic setting to put on your gown. Enjoy the photos of this beautiful wedding, can't wait for the new Vogue to come out so I can see more of the fashion! xox Mindy

Recreate Kate Moss’ Wedding | Floral Headdress Recipes by Ovando

Recreate Kate Moss’ Wedding | Floral Headdress Recipes by Ovando A few of the “official” {and by official, we mean Mario Testino shot} photos of Kate Moss’ wedding were released to the press yesterday – and of course, I’m in love. The full spread will run in Vogue’s September issue – but for now, I’m completely transfixed by the romantic hair wreaths in the above photo.
Earlier this summer, our resident floral contributors at Ovando hosted a floral headdress workshop at the Soho Grand . Below, Ovando shares two ways to recreate this beautiful boho-chic look. Enjoy! Recreate Kate Moss’ Wedding | Floral Headdress Recipes by Ovando Floral Wreath Recipe:

—18 gauge floral wire
—Floral tape
—Clippers
—Floral wire
—Pale green silk ribbon

1. Measure your floral wire to fit the crown of your head {roughly 23 to 25 inches}. Allow roughly one extra inch at both ends of the ring.

2. Wrap both ends inward to create a small loop. Use floral tape to adhere loops. Use a very small strip of light-green silk ribbon to adhere the two loops together in order to form the rounded base of your wreath.

3. Hand-wrap floral tape onto the stem of each of your flowers {wax flowers and stems of Italian ruscus}.

4. Use floral tape to adhere flowers to the wire base. The spacing of your flowers may vary, depending on whether you want a plush garden look or a minimalist design.
Recreate Kate Moss’ Wedding | Floral Headdress Recipes by Ovando Floral Headband Recipe:

—1/4-bunch each white & pink wax flowers
—Italian ruscus
—Floral tape
—Clippers
—Pale-green silk ribbon
—A headband

1. Tightly wind your pale-green silk ribbon around headband mold. No traces of the mold should be left visible.

2. Weave the Italian ruscus around your headband, end-to-end. Use a small cut of floral wire to fasten the greenery.

3. Clean your flowers and gentle hand-wrap stems with green floral tape.

4. Use floral tape to adhere flowers to the headband. Floral accents will be positioned on top left of the headband.

Celebrating Grandmas!

Celebrating Grandmas! Good morning, lovelies! Have you ever come across an old photo of a loved one and instantly imagined them in a whole new light?
Last night was the first time I saw this photo of my grandmother preparing for her wedding. Doesn’t she look so pretty? {I’m just dying to know what she is thinking in this moment}!
Merci New York will be closed today and tomorrow as we celebrate her life, but as for now… I thought we’d open the forum on all things Grandmas – {because let’s face it, they’re pretty great}.
What was your grandparents’ wedding like? How are you involving your grandmother in your own wedding?

Peaceful Plantation Bridal Session

This is such a pretty bridal photo session, that I actually thought it was a styled shoot before looking more closely! The bride and groom was married this past April, and currently live on a gorgeous plantation with their own little chicken farm and horse stables in Staunton, Virginia.

Beautifully captured by Katelyn James Photography , the Grey Gables plantation served as a really peaceful setting for Jill's bridal shoot, with its charming porch, sprawling fields of green and cherry blossoms. I love all of the gorgeous light in these photos, and there's a real sense of warmth and contentment emanating from the bride throughout the shoot that really draws me in. That, and the little chick that Jill is holding in one of the photos below is guaranteed to make you smile on an otherwise average Monday!
