Patagonia Common Threads iFixit Partnership

Patagonia Common Threads iFixit Partnership

This Thanksgiving, Patagonia is once again pushing the Anti Black Friday message, encouraging you not to buy new gear unless you really need it. Instead, come celebrate the quality gear you already own in one of the company's retail stores tomorrow evening.

In celebration of their Worn Wear program, fifteen Patagonia retail stores across the country (see above) will hold a Black Friday Worn Wear Party. Show up at 4PM for food, live music, and the rare chance to sample Patagonia's California Route beer made by New Belgium (I am still on the hunt for the stuff).

Bring in your old Patagonia gear to get help fixing any damage in one of the repair clinics and watch the Worn Wear movie. Worn Wear is a new short film by Keith, Lauren, Chris, and Dan Malloy that tells the stories of eight people and the well-loved, well-used pieces of Patagonia clothing that have become part of their lives. If you can't make it to one of the Patagonia stores tomorrow, you can watch the Worn Wear movie below.

Patagonia Common Threads iFixit PartnershipProbably the bigger story is that Patagonia has also teamed up with website iFixit to create a series of free repair guides for Patagonia clothing, further encouraging you to repair your gear before buying new. I am sure you will find the various repair techniques, such as how to replace a zipper on your fleece jacket, just as useful for clothing from other outdoor brands.

To help you become a repair master, Patagonia is selling an Expedition Sewing Kit ($30) in its retail stores and online, complete with a machined awl made of high-quality aluminum, heavy-duty needles, various selections of thread, and patch material.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Strava Adds Auto-Pause And Goal Tracking

Strava Adds Auto-Pause And Goal Tracking

Using GPS movement as a guide, the new version of Strava automatically detects when you are at rest and pauses the app. Once you begin moving, auto-pause will turn off again. Now your moving and resting time can be calculated during the actual activity instead of after upload when you get back home.

Both runners and cyclists craving more accurate speeds and splits will benefit from the addition of auto-pause, now available for all iOS and Android devices running Strava’s mobile app. The new feature intelligently pauses and restarts the recording of an activity when you momentarily stop.

In addition to auto-pause, the new Strava mobile app incorporates weekly goals to help you track and improve performance. While you could do this online with the premium service before, the new mobile app feature allows you to set running and cycling goals by distance or time and to visualize your progress each week.

Apple-heads the world over will be happy to know the latest version of Strava works with Apple’s iOS 8 and therefore your new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus delivered today.

Integration with Apple’s iOS 8 also means you can start and stop the recording of your activities through a new Notification Center widget, eliminating the need to navigate to the Strava app during your workout. The widget also displays real-time activity information including elapsed time, speed or pace, and total distance traveled.

Version 4.2 of the Strava app is available in the App Store today and will soon be available in Google Play. Let’s just hope you don’t now become obsessed with checking to make sure the auto-pause has released.

6 Tips For International Travel

by Joseph Hallgren

6 Tips For International Travel

Today, international travel is widely accessible to many adventurers. With flights becoming
cheaper and airlines offering better deals, more people are able to travel the globe. During my travel I have come up with a few tips that I would give to other travelers during their first international trip.

1. Arrive 2 hours early to the airport.

Due to security checkpoints at airports, there may be long lines at airline checkin as well as the airport security line. In order to ensure that you make your flight on time, many airlines recommend that you arrive two hours early to the airport to have time to handle delays without missing your flight. Depending on your destination, you may want to consider adding a
little more time, especially if you live in an area that has a lot of traffic that could delay you
even further.

2. Avoid sleeping on flights.

This may be a personal preference, but I have found that not sleeping on the flights helps me adjust to the local time of where I will be traveling easily and with minimal jet lag. Although it is a bit of a struggle on the plane, staying awake during the flight allows me to make the most of the time in the country I am visiting without being sluggish and tired.

3. Pack smart.

Packing smart means avoiding checked baggage if possible. Depending on weather conditions and the length of your travel, it is possible to have only two carry-on bags, and enough clothes for your trip, plus extra if you prefer. This will help you avoid any bag fees (although most international flights offer the first checked bag free), as well as prevent any lost luggage. No one wants to start their vacation off trying to track down a lost bag.

4. Use Wi-Fi for your phone.

With smartphones being as amazing as they are, there is no reason to spend money on an international plan to call home in a foreign country. Although different parts of the world may have differences in how much Wi-Fi is available to you while roaming around, most hotels offer free Wi-Fi. Along with apps you can download, iPhones offer iMessage, FaceTime, and email to help you communicate with loved ones at home. During a trip to Costa Rica, I found that almost all restaurants, bars, and hotels offered free Wi-Fi to the public, while in Paris we only had Wi-Fi in our hotel (although we were not searching for it much at the time).

5. Know which copies to take with you and which to leave behind.

It is a smart idea to always carry a copy of your passport on you while traveling abroad, and to keep a copy with someone at home that has your itinerary. If you ever lose your passport abroad, you are going to want to have a copy to ensure that you had identification. It’s also better to carry the copy on you during the day than it is to carry your real passport, which is safer locked up at wherever you may be staying. Hotel safes are made to be utilized!

6. Make sure to get up and walk around on the plane.

Unless you are asleep, it is a good idea to get up and walk around a bit on the plane. Sitting for long periods of time can allow blood clots in your legs to form. Simply ensuring that you get up and walk around a little during flights can help prevent this from happening.

As a traveler, these are tips I find to be the most important for traveling abroad. I encourage everyone to get out and travel – the world is a big, beautiful place. Lay back and relax on a tropical beach, explore the beautiful cities of Europe, or immerse yourself in a new culture and take away a great experience and memories from each trip abroad.

Safe travels!

Sparrows Point Engagement Session by tPoz Photography

What a gorgeous Sparrows Point Engagement Session by tPoz Photography to take us into this holiday weekend! We refuse to accept Summer is coming to an end and would very much like to spend our summer nights at this couple’s gorgeous waterfront home with their two pups! Teri tells us,“We watched & watched the weather reports…and with a 70% chance of a thunderstorm, we took the gamble! We were super lucky to have some gorgeous skies with pretty puffy clouds, and the nasty storm held off until we were finished! Kathie+Aaron+their pups rocked this session! Fishing is huge to Aaron, and they spend a lot of time on their boat, the Bandire. I simply adore the teal color of their boat, as well as the life these two have built for themselves on the water. I can’t wait for their Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay wedding later this year!

Cycling Trainer Geared Towards High Power Output

By Don Jurries

Cycling Trainer Geared Towards High Power Output

It’s all about high power output training. The Revbox Drivetrainer , designed by New Zealand cyclist and engineer Craig Sharratt, is a high-performance cycling trainer specifically geared for high intensity workouts to improve key areas of your cycling performance.

Unlike other cycling trainers, the Revbox Drivetrainer was never intended to replicate general road conditions. Instead, the objective was to build a cycling trainer that could produce extremely high power outputs to improve the neuromuscular efficiency of a cyclist by targeting specific muscle groups.

The key to the Revbox Drivetrainer’s success is a 580mm (22.8”) diameter air-braked fan that allows power outputs in excess of 1800 watts. This large diameter, lightweight fan pushes such a large volume of air as to make the range of resistance nearly unlimited.

Most smaller diameter trainers have resistance levels dictated by the mechanical limits of the flywheel, while tire-roller trainers can slip during harder efforts. By removing your rear wheel and working with your chain, Craig Sharratt’s design minimizes the mechanical friction that often plagues tire-roller trainers to about half that of typical road rolling resistance, thus optimizing pedal technique and power transfer.

Manufactured in Christchurch, New Zealand, the Revbox Drivetrainer has been built with transport in mind. Weighing just 9.5 kg (21 lbs), the cycling trainer comes with a reinforced travel bag. About the only problem the Revbox Drivetrainer hasn’t solved yet is noise, a common problem with flywheel designs.

You will need to be serious about your training regimen, as the Revbox retails for about NZ$2000 (over US$1,500).

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike

Artist Barry Howard has always loved to design and built tiny living spaces and his gypsy caravan is certainly one of the smallest dwellings I have ever seen.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike The caravan is so light that it can be towed by a bicycle

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike The 12 square feet/1.2 m2 floor space of the caravan is actually a bed. Three removable panels under the sleeping pad provide access to Barry’s arts supplies, clothes and the galley.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike A table mounts on the side, as does the small sink, and the one burner camp stove sits on the table, which doubles as counter space for preparing meals.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike The bed can also be converted to a sitting space with a small table which can be used for dining or computer work.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike About 80 % of the materials Barry Howard used for his small gypsy caravan are recycled and repurposed. The aluminium that makes up the chassis and framing for the port-side wall came from an old broken pop-up craft fair booth, as did most of the screws and bolts. The hitch came off a church organ that he dismantled, the wheels from his folding bicycle, the rear stabilizing legs came from a camera tripod he cannibalized, and the fabrics and much of the wood came from his recently deceased minivan camper.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike When Barry Howard uses the caravan as a bicycle trailer, he folds the top down otherwise it would get a bit too top heavy.

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike Barry Howard is available for hire if anyone needs a gypsy caravan of their own. He does all of the design, building, decorative painting and stained glass himself. Anyone interested can call him at 530-355-1319 or email him at barryhowardstudio@yahoo.com.
