Where the Travel Bargains Will Be in 2011

This chair is waiting for you in Honduras

Last Friday I was the star of the show in this USA Today article: 10 Great Places for Travel Bargains in 2011 . It’s got a number in the title and it makes bold, confident predictions, so it’ll be a crowd-pleaser. Go check it out.

I could end up being wrong on some of the destinations. If Greece and Ireland get their fiscal act together and get off the TV news, then there might not be as many bargains this summer as we’ve seen recently. And I’m fully aware that one wild card in there, Ethiopia, is not going to get too many more visitors no matter how far their currency drops. If you’re a backpacker though, consider putting it on your list.

Otherwise, the World’s Cheapest Destinations are still pretty cheap. Turkey and Morocco less so (I’m probably dropping both from the 4th edition), Honduras and Mexico more so.

I’ve made the point before and will make it again because it’s so important: when a destination is or has been getting negative media coverage, that’s when you’ll find the deals of a lifetime. Pull up a map, read some message boards, and figure out where the problems really are in the country. Then just avoid those areas. Ciudad Juarez should be avoided at all costs. But Sayulita or Puerto Escondido? Sleepy and safe as always.

There’s also a slideshow of photos —including some of mine—that goes with the article linked above. But be advised you’ll have to endure some annoying advertising to view it. Have another tab open where you can go for 16 seconds until the video is done and the page unlocks.
