In a decision that will warm the hearts of beer fans, the EU has ruled that the brand “Budweiser” belongs to Budvar , not to the house of bland, Anheuser-Busch.
The Prague Daily Monitor reports that A-B is blocked from using the trademark name in Europe, that Czech company Budvar has dibs on it. So if you order a Bud in Europe, you’ll get something with some oomph and body, not yellow fizzy water.
A-B can appeal though, so this probably won’t be the end of it. “Over the past six years, Budvar and Anheuser were involved in 86 disputes, of which 69 were won by Budvar, 12 by Anheuser and five disputes had no winner or loser.”
