Why should you choose Ireland for your honeymoon? “Because you won’t find a friendlier welcome anywhere in the world. Ireland offers so much both in terms of history and culture but also in terms of nightlife. You could visit structures older than the pyramids in the morning, take in spectacular scenery in the afternoon and party long into the night,” says Colum Cronin, study abroad director at Irish American University in Dublin. He’s right- Ireland’s list of things to do and see is endless, and the country offers a rich cultural and historical experience. From the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher on the west coast, to Blarney Castle in the south, to the vibrant capital city of Dublin in the east, Ireland is a small country that packs a big punch. And, no matter where you choose to go, the scenery and landscape is just stunning.
Many would say that Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It has the sea, mountains, and the countryside all on one green island. The Burren in the west and the Ring of Kerry in the south are unique examples of beautiful Irish landscapes. So much natural beauty in one place is reason enough to visit, but Ireland also offers a very colorful history, going all the way back to ancient times. Newgrange, in the east, is one prehistoric monument to see. In more recent history, Dublin, especially, is full of rich literary history, as it was the home of influential writers such as Oscar Wilde and James Joyce. Ireland is also home to some of the nicest, friendliest people around. Spend an evening in one of the country’s thousands of pubs with a pint and talk to the locals to get a true taste of Ireland. The music, dancing, and the social atmosphere of the pubs are a huge part of Irish culture, so that’s something that every visitor must do at least once! In Ireland, you will never be bored, between the historical sights, the gorgeous scenery, and the pubs.
Since Ireland is such a small country, it’s tempting to try and see it all at once. However, since there are so many attractions, rushing and trying to do it all is not the best way to spend your trip. Emmiline Auth, a Catonsville resident who spent part of her own honeymoon in Ireland, advises newlyweds, “I would strongly suggest that you choose a specific area that you really want to see and enjoy. Spend your time there are really get to know the area.” She also suggests that visitors rent a car for their visit in order to fully experience the country. Cronin agrees, stating that the best way to see Ireland is “by car, undoubtedly. Organised tours are fine but having a car offers far more flexibility.” A 10-day car rental from Dublin starts at as little as $250, and gives honeymooners the ability to explore Ireland at their own pace.
