Anyone ready for some spring skiing?

With the sun finally shining and the weather practically balmy, you might be thinking about heading to the beach.  But it’s not too late to get some time in on the slopes.

Grouse Mountain had a near record year in terms of snowfall, with a whopping 1,100 centimetres of snow since last fall (Remember all that rain we had in the city?  Well, that was all white stuff in the North Shore mountains).

Even with the warm temperatures over the weekend, Grouse still has a 518-centimetre base at the peak. With all that snow, the mountain plans to stay open to skiers for at least another week, until April 29 . Grouse will maintain regular hours of operation from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. through April 29.  If the weather holds out, it should make for some epic spring skiing right here in Vancouver.  Take off that parka, strip down to a t-shirt (or even less, if you dare), soak up some sun and swish your way through the season’s last snow.

On a warm, sunny day, skiing Grouse comes pretty close to the consummate Vancouver experience.  The views of the city – not to mention Vancouver Island and Mt. Baker in Washington – are spectacular.  The skiing is great, especially considering that Grouse is only about a 30-minute ride from downtown.  And after you’ve finished your runs, you can work on your tan on the mountaintop patio (and maybe enjoy a refreshing drink, or three).

Though Grouse has only officially extended the season until April 29, a recent article in the Vancouver Sun suggests the mountain may remain open through May.  For the latest information about conditions, check out the Grouse Mountain website .
