While we love sharing beautiful inspiration on Merci New York, the absolute favorite part of our job is sharing wonderful love stories. The kind of love stories that melt your heart; that make you feel warm and fuzzy; and in today’s case, the kind that reached us by way of a sweet morning email… take a peek. My name is Mohan and my fiancee Holiday is a daily reader of your blog – she loves it and I can’t tell you how many emails I get from her with links for me to see something on Merci New York… … We live in the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Holiday is currently getting her Masters degree from New School, while I am working (for the man!). As part of her graduate program, Holiday has been away working in Kosovo (yes, that Kosovoa in Europe) since May 28th. It has been 61 days and I miss her terribly! I thought it would be a great way to surprise her if she saw our pics on your blog! She’s coming back in a few weeks from Kosovo and we are getting married in November in Florida. I haven’t seen her in 2 months now (well, besides our daily Skype’ing)… I’ve attached some pics and the link to our photographer’s site ( Photo Pink , out of Williamsburg). Thanks for listening,
Hi Jacqueline,
Needless to say, Mohan, we are honored to share your beautiful engagement shoot! {And Holiday, we think you have a keeper on your hands}…
All our best wishes for a wonderful wedding,
Jacqueline & Amélie
From the photographers at Photo Pink:
There are oh-so-many reasons why Holiday and Mohan are incredibly cool. First off, they met at a Daft Punk concert. Secondly, their first date was going to an amateur boxing match. Thirdly {and lastly, although there are countless more reasons why they’re cool} is that they came up with the most creative engagement session we’ve had to date.
We started in Williamsburg by the industrial and graffiti covered warehouses. Holiday and Mohan brought two red balloons and the contrast of the red against the bleak buildings was amazing.
Next we drove down to Coney Island where we walked around the awesome strangeness that is the boardwalk and took more balloon pictures before giving them away to some cute kids.
After walking on the beach and eating some tasty carnival food we were off to Chinatown. There is an amazing alley in Chinatown covered in posts with little fringes of phone numbers that flutter in the wind. It’s one of my favorite places in NYC and I was so excited that they knew it too and wanted to shoot there. It was an excellent spot for photos. We wandered around Chinatown for a bit longer and ended the day back in Williamsburg after sunset.

We really love our new Meet Our Sponsors series – it’s been so fun to showcase all the wonderful businesses that graciously make Merci happen! Today, we’re excited to share the work of photographer Stephanie Reinish . Armed with several years experience in fashion and retail photography, Stephanie has a wonderful eye for detail and an acute love for NYC that shines through all her work… Take a peek! What inspired you to begin your career as a photographer?
I’m the type of person who if I want something, I make it happen {some way or another}, and I wanted a new camera. I reached out to a friend of the family who was just starting to shoot weddings and events to see if she had work for me, so I could justify the purchase.
Once I shot my first wedding, I was hooked and knew this was what I had to do. I always thought of wedding photography as stiff and posed, but there is so much more to it, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
What do you like most about owning your own photography business?
My favorite thing about what I do — whether it’s shooting a wedding, portrait or event — is that I’m working with real people and capturing a moment in their life that they will treasure for a lifetime. I worked in the corporate world at a photo studio with hair and make up artists, models and stylists, and it was all so fake, the pictures never meant anything to anyone. That’s why I really encourage people to display and enjoy the artwork I create.
Where do you draw everyday inspiration from?I’m inspired by our wonderful city! When I am walking home, there’s nothing more inspiring than seeing the sun set over Manhattan and watching the Empire State Building light up every night. I’m always inspired by the families and the young couples in love walking down the street… essentially, all the people who make New York City the wonderful place it is.
Where did your company begin? Where is it located now?
I started my company in my Upper East Side apartment and we have now relocated to Long Island City {I swear it’s close, just one stop from Grand Central}! I’m still based in my apartment as I like to shoot on location and take advantage of the amazing backdrops the city has to offer.

Allison and Jared’s colorful save the date video had me dancing around the Merci New York office all morning! It’s fun, it’s playful, it’s “green,” {and so creative}, I just had to share it with you!
The shoot was submitted to us by photographer Thomas Marlow , who has also been featured on Merci New York for his custom photo booth designs. Thomas’ work is constantly brimming with tons of playful, creative energy — it always leaves us smiling.

Back by popular demand, we are excited to reintroduce our Chic Vendor Spotlight posts, showcasing some of our favorite vendors, artists and designers across New York City. Today, we’re featuring the lovely Lion in the Sun . The landmark Park Slope paperie is responsible for creating some of the most beautiful city-centric invitations and paper goods in New York, making them a go-to resource for many Manhattan brides. For close to ten years, city brides have trusted Lion in the Sun to provide gorgeous stationery that creates a perfect first impression of their wedding. While known for their iconic New York-inspired work, Lion in the Sun also creates a myriad of other designs, from the very simple and modern, to the most ornate and elegant.
Merci New York was thrilled to chat with owner Melinda Morris about the development and philosophy of Lion in the Sun and share some of their gorgeous work with our readers…
So, tell us about yourself!
As a child, I worked at the original Lion in the Sun in Huntington, Long Island for my parents {which I affectionately recall as slave labor}. Then, after a career as an event planner, I decided to open my own store that specializes in printed invitations because I wanted to be in a business that revolves around happy occasions. That store is located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, my home since 1996. And it is in that store that I met my future husband, David, who lived around the corner.
David and I love being a part of the community and have a passion for and pride in the work we do. We know that when you visit the store to place a printing order, it is our responsibility as experts to guide you through the multiple options in terms of products available, customizations, appropriate wording, etc., to make sure the you are delighted not just with your order, but with your experience as well. Additionally, while our store reflects a deep appreciation for fine paper products, we also are respectful of our place on the planet and have been actively seeking out quality recycled paper goods. What inspired the creation of your brand?
I opened Lion in the Sun with the idea to create a paperie with beautiful cards, gifts and wrap and custom invitation studio atmosphere — with a low-key, laid back, no-stress, no pretension atmosphere and a focus on local artisan and designers.
What makes Lion in the Sun unique?
For the custom invitations, we try very hard to never say “No, you can’t do that” or “We can’t do it on a small budget.” We believe that every wedding is important and special whether they have $500 or $5,000 dollars, and we make sure that everyone feels that we can help them achieve their vision for their wedding invitations. I love the idea of being able to do almost anything. Our inspiration comes from our clients; they come to us with the greatest ideas. We also do a lot of design that is inspired by New York City and our city-centric surrounding, including the locations where our clients are getting married. I think we are unique in the market in that we offer affordable options and custom design along with our experience in event planning and etiquette – all in one package.
When did you decide to begin Lion in the Sun?
As cliché as it sounds… In September of 2001, the combination of turning 30 and 9/11 {which happened in the same week} really shocked me into pursuing what I really wanted. I realized that my parents business {the original Lion in the Sun based in Long Island – still going strong} was a great model, and I remembered what I had always loved about the biz is that you get to work with people celebrating happy moments, and lend a meaningful experience to their important events!
Most importantly, I realized that my neighborhood had nothing like it. It was brimming with young couples with new babies and growing families – and nowhere to buy beautiful paper. Additionally, I know so many wonderful designers right here in Brooklyn that I wanted to offer a place to showcase their work. So within 6 months I had quit my well-paying job, had begun renovations and was sourcing vendors for my own paperie.
What do you like most about your job?
I am so lucky to do what I do. Just about every day we get to hear happy stories of love, new babies and family celebrations. We get to help guide them through the process that can be scary, stressful and expensive. It is rewarding to see them come out happy on the other side. My favorite {and seemingly most helpful} thing we tell all our clients is “Relax, it’s just a party!”
Brag to us a bit {we won’t tell}…
I am most proud of our great reputation and that our clients become family. We are proud to support our clients quirky, offbeat requests and revel in the successes of making their vision come to life. We are so grateful for their appreciation and the loyal customer base we have. We believe in being honest and supportive of our clients. We work hard to help people navigate a potentially overwhelming and stressful time, and instead, make it meaningful and fun for them. {We understand that sometimes it’s not just about the paper!}
From surfside clambakes and verdant garden soirees to elaborate museum fund-raisers and celebrity weddings, It! Weddings & Events produces the most talked-about bashes in town and country, including some very posh soirees in New York and the Hamptons.
Today, we’re thrilled to share a gorgeous bridal shower that It! submitted to Merci New York, complete with all the pretty, posh polish of a Sunday polo party. The afternoon soiree took place at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, but could easily inspire every East End bride planning to party at this summer’s Bridgehampton Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge {which, as you know, begins this Saturday}… Enjoy!

I truly cannot get over how pretty this shower is; from the sweet treats to the green fields, to the Lilly dresses and the flowing bubbly, it is truly pure polo perfection!
Bride Stephanie Covert’s shower was held in a private portion of the Nespresso Grande Pavilion at International Polo Club and featured passed hors d’oeuvres, open bar flowing with Veuve Clicquot and a three-course seated lunch fieldside during a Sunday polo match. The bride was surprised with a few drop-in guests, including several of Wellington’s top polo players, and of course, her husband-to-be, Lamont B. P. Harris, also of Palm Beach.

Of course, there are many ways to get fabulously creative, all of which the Happily Ever Afterwords staff has detailed in their site pages , but from my own standpoint, I cannot get over this product. It’s a wonderfully throughful gift, and one that truly keeps giving long after the wedding.

I recently received the sweetest note from Lori Hutchinson, aka “ The Caketress “, and ever since, I just cannot stop thinking about her couture wedding cakes and petits gateaux. Truly. If she packed up shop and moved to Manhattan, I’d plan a fab fete just to work with her.
The Toronto-based designer has a penchant for combining stylish design and edible works of art. As a fashion aficionado {clearly, a girl after my own heart}, she has a fabulous way of adding chic embellishments to her work that are reminiscent of millinery, embroidery and draping details. Her designs leave me completely breathless. Just take a peek and see for yourself…
For more of Lori’s gorgeous work, pop by The Caketress site and blog . And if you are in the Toronto area, well, you are one lucky, lucky duck and needless to say, we are very, very jealous.

When it comes to hot summer days and cool, breezy nights, you’d be mad not to channel your inner Jackie O. and hightail it to a beachy Rhode Island retreat. This weekend, I’ll be wearing down my Jack Rogers , sipping my Pimm’s Cup and digging into a good beachside read – preferably at the newly-restored Ocean House in Watch Hill. Here’s how to play the part for your weekend getaway or honeymoon:
1. Vintage Hermes Birkin Bag {but you knew that}.
2. Jack Rogers bell sleeve dress in hand sewn lace {perhaps a beach-chic wedding dress option}?
3. AE nautical stripe bandeau bikini { on clearance – it’s practically free}!
4. Vintage Chanel gold-tone quilted signature interlocking ‘CC’ clip-on earrings.
5. ‘Large Lizzy’ scarf by Lorick, with Warhol-inspired suitcase print; at Standard Deviation .
6. Jack Rogers iconic Hamptons Navajo sandal.
Happy Monday all! I’m about to head across Central Park for a slew of errands and appointments, but before I do, I wanted to share this gorgeous shoot with you. If you’re not familiar with photographer Olivia Graham’s work, you must go check out her fashion portfolio , stat. Graham does a ton of work for the European glossies, but often shoots on location in NYC. Her streetscape, Central Park and landmark shots are perfect inspiration for any chic New York City engagement session. Enjoy, lovelies! BT dubs, I cannot take credit for digging this up, {the lovely Grace of The Cinderella Project found the shoot in all its sweet, vintage city glory}; but seeing it’s killer fashion and simple, yet stellar Central Park locales made it worthy for a repost.
For a West Coast view of all things sweet and lovely, be sure to check out Grace’s great wedding blog . Not only does she have an amazing eye for fashionable details, she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met.

Phew! Talk about seeing the sites of the city! As true New Yorkers, it seems Ann and Ben had an ambitious agenda of covering the lion’s share of NYC landmarks in their engagement shoot with photographer Ben Godkin . From Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge {and every subway stop in between}, they saw it all, and looked tres-fabulous in the process. Take a peek and check off the sites as you seem them! Q&A with the couple {Ann and Ben}:
How did you meet? We worked at the same advertising agency and had mutual friends from Texas here in New York. We started to hang out outside of work and quickly became close friends.
What do you think will be unique about your wedding? We hope that it’ll be the most fun wedding our guests will ever attend. We want everyone to have a blast and pretty much drink and dance their asses off.
What will guests be dancing to at your wedding? We have slightly different tastes in music. We actually don’t even have a song, so we’ll have to figure that one out for the wedding. I like country, he likes “dirty south” rap songs… I guess there’s no denying though that we’re originally from Texas.
What do you think is most special about you as a couple? We always joke about how we are the same person…mostly in the way we think. For example, when we are trying to figure out where to eat, we almost always think of the same thing. I’m sure other couples feel their connection to each other is unique, but we’re pretty certain that ours is truly special.
What is your favorite restaurant in New York? That’s hard to nail down, as we love to eat. Cafe Habana is always a good one, Shake Shack rocks, Prune is also amazing and Ippudo (in St Marks) is awesome as well.
About the Photographer {Ben Godkin}: I had never been to New York before this trip. I grew up in a small town in Texas, so it was an amazing experience to see the big city. I went to school for Fine Art Photography at Texas State so being in New York surrounded by all the amazing art and history was very inspiring. After school, I started my own wedding photography business and it quickly became a full-time job. I absolutely love being able to follow my passion for photography and share it with all the wonderful couples that let me into their lives to document the most important moments in their lives together.

Are you ready for some epic eye candy? I’ve just been so excited to share this shoot with you; and am even more thrilled now that BRIDES magazine’s newly designed blog, Aisle Say , has picked it up as well…
Merci New York recently worked alongside Adrienne Colosimo of Bespoke Affairs to create a Art-Deco inspired fashion shoot that speaks to the city bride. Photographed by Brian DeMello , the images represent the very first bridal fashion shoot atop the legendary Chrysler building.
About the shoot:
As young New York City based event designers and stylists, Adrienne and I both adore transforming bare spaces into luxe vignettes, and gritty city locales into posh fetes. But no project has been half as exciting or scintillating as the one we were faced with this spring.
On a Friday, we received a once in a lifetime opportunity to produce and design a jaw-dropping bridal editorial shoot atop the Chrysler building.
That next Tuesday, we made it happen – marking the first-ever bridal editorial shoot on the historic, landmark building.
As an iconic part of the New York City skyline, the Chrysler Building is a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture and one of the finest buildings in Manhattan.
Having mere hours to construct and execute our vision, we decided to pay homage to the buildingʼs design, and style the bride with an Art Deco sensibility, all while keeping the look current and obtainable.
We called on some trusted friends in the industry to help complete the look, and couldn’t be more pleased with the inspiring outcome. We hope that you will enjoy the beauty and grace of our bride soaring above New York’s majestic cityscape. Film Noir meets Gotham City.
