The islands in the Caribbean are not the only ones that have white sand beaches and clear blue waters.  The Riviera Maya, along the south tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, has it all – white sand beaches, turquoise water, tropical jungles and ancient Mayan ruins to explore, according to Christi Rogers, owner of Travel Bug, LLC .

“This is a great destination because you can relax on the beautiful white sand beach and also have some exciting off resort activities to choose from,” she said.

The 112-mile stretch of coastal paradise has an average temperature of 80 degrees. The Riviera Maya is certainly for those adventurous couples with its close proximity to the Yucatan’s most popular sites.  The Mayan civilization is filled with wonder and secrets to the rest of the world.  Couples can explore the ruins, take a tour or even zip line through to see it all from above.

“One of the most famous Mayan ruin sites is located in Tulum,” Rogers said. “It sits right on the coastline and is spectacular.”

Besides exploring the Mayan ruins, couples can also choose from activities such as swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, learning about the area’s ecology or shopping at La Quinta Avenida, also known as “Fifth Avenue.”

“I honeymooned there four and a half years ago. We loved it,” said Dana Cubbage of South Carolina. “I absolutely love the Riviera Maya, and I’ll definitely be back someday.”

There are only a few adults-only resorts in this area that cater to the honeymoon and anniversary couples, according to Rogers.  “The Secrets Resorts are a great choice because they offer a luxury all-inclusive experience and have three resorts in this area to choose from – Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun, Secrets Silversands and Secrets Maroma Beach,” she said. “Maroma beach was voted “best beach in Mexico” by the Travel Channel.”

Teri Pozniak, owner and photographer of Tpoz Photography , and one of our fleet crew vendors stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun on her honeymoon. This adults-only five-star-resort, excludes pure luxury and delivers on all expectations, according to Pozniak. “Every employee seemed to truly enjoy their job, making it all that much better for guests,” she said. “The food was outstanding, and the beverages were frosty. This was probably the most relaxing vacation I’ve been on, and I’m well traveled.”

Last but not least, our travel agent had some advice to share.

“Some shy away from this destination due to what they hear on the media regarding safety, “ Rogers said. “I can say that Mexico is a huge country as is the United States, and the resort areas including the Riviera Maya area are perfectly safe when using common sense. I have traveled there on my own [honeymoon] and have sent many clients to this beautiful destination with great success and enjoyment.”

Riviera Maya makes for a perfect honeymoon destination for those wanting sun, sand, beach and, especially, adventure. If only couples could bring back the warm weather, white sand beach and clear blue water back to Maryland, it would be a honeymoon all year round.
