Layers of Lovely

We’re so excited to announce (and be a part of!) the Layers of Lovely event at Garnish Boutique in Baltimore this December. In celebration of the event, a few of the participating vendors got together for a little inspirational shoot on the Eastern Shore.

Please join us, Sunday December 2nd 2012 from 12 o’clock til three at Garnish Boutique in Baltimore.

Mix and mingle with industry experts and receive inside tips on planning your perfect fete. What style gown will fit your body best and how can you ensure your makeup won’t run? Need to find printed invitations, calligraphy or custom maps? Will your planner supply you with a timeline, and can she find you a valet service? Which flowers photograph best and will peonies and tulips hold up on a hot day? Can you mix and match linens, and where on earth can you find two vintage sofas and a collection of colored bottles to rent?

Fall Fashion Wants

Happy Friday!!! Don't you just love short weeks? I know that I do! Although this weekend probably won't be the most relaxing for Dale and I because we're moving into our NEW HOUSE tomorrow! We officially close on our home/loan today, and I can't even believe it. We've been anxiously awaiting this day all summer, and it's finally HERE! It is by far our biggest accomplishment to date, and we both feel like we've been waiting a long, long time for this. We're both so happy, and I will definitely be sharing photos with you all next week!

I'm not entirely sure why I'm doing a shopping post today. Since we're moving into a new house this weekend, I highly doubt that I'll be able to go shopping for a very, very long time, but I guess it's just wishful thinking :) A girl can dream, can't she?! I feel like I've been seeing a lot of "Fashion for Fall" stories and product roundups online, on TV and such, so I thought I would pull together my top "wants" for the Fall season.

Wedding Desserts | Current Trends From Cakes to Dessert Bars

The dessert choice for the wedding reception is a major style statement that gives light into the personalities of the bride and groom. In recent years dessert tables with a variety of sweets have become very popular in addition to or in place of a traditional wedding cake. Cake pops, cupcakes, dessert bars, mini pies, you name it! But that doesn’t mean that having a traditional wedding cake is outdated by any means! In fact wedding cakes are still very popular for the bride and groom who have a traditional style wedding as well as those who have an elaborate themed wedding.

When trying to decide what dessert route to go, the best things to consider are the budget and amount of people that will need to be served. For large weddings, a wedding cake will be sure to serve all guests. Even if choosing a dessert table for a large wedding, the price per individual dessert is typically inexpensive, so ordering a large quantity is feasible. Another factor to help decide is to think about what other types of food are going to be served. If a large meal is served, choosing a buffet-style dessert table with a variety of smaller sweets allows guests with a full appetite to take the treat to-go. Or if the wedding reception will serve mainly hor d’oeuvres and finger foods for the night, a wedding cake in addition to a variety of individual dessert sweets would be a great idea.

Wedding cakes are especially appealing for large elegant weddings. Opposed to small sweets, the traditional cake has greater design and finish options. Today brides that choose a wedding cake are interested in having alternative finishes for the cake in order to make it more special and unique. Popular now is a “softer, elegant, more edible looking cake,” no longer the traditional sharp-edge lined finish says the owner at SugarBakers , a local wedding cake specialist.

Trends in Wedding Cakes:

1. Themed: Weddings are big on themes now. Retro, nautical, seasonal, you name it! Brides can request artistic designs, toppers, and fondants for the cake decorations to creatively incorporate the theme onto the cake.

2. Chocolate: Better known as the “Groom Cake,” no longer are wedding cakes only a traditional white frosting. Rich chocolate cakes with dark chocolate icing are making for a decadent taste and makes for a great aroma as well. No wedding guest would be opposed!

3. Atypical shapes: Go against the grain of rounded tiers and your wedding cake will grab the attention of guests immediately! Trending now are the hexagon, square and octagon shaped cakes – they have a simplistic yet sophisticated appearance. Artistic cake chefs can make the cake even into a certain shape, symbol, or character – very fun for weddings with a particular theme (Check out some of the unique cakes on our Pinterest board link below!)

If you are planning a smaller wedding reception, individualized desserts are great because you get to choose the exact amount and variety, and leftovers will be less likely.

The owner and head chef at Sweet Hearts Patisserie advises clients that when there are numerous choices and flavors of sweets being served guests will want to try one of each – so make sure you provide enough for each guest to enjoy at least one of each. She also notes that the best way to keep costs down for an individual desserts table is to limit the selection to only 3 or 4 options. Lastly, she recommends getting a small topper cake or a two tier wedding cake for the cake-cutting ceremony. The small cake will also serve as the visual focal point for the dessert table location while the individual desserts can be displayed surrounding it.

Trends in Wedding Sweets:
1. Cupcakes: Not to big and not to small – it’s the perfect size for a post-dinner appetite or a take home treat. What’s so great is that you don’t have to settle on one type of cake or design. Cupcake shops can whip up numerous combinations of tastes, fondants, colors, fillings…just about anything there is to the cake!

2. Cake pops: About the size of a donut muchkin – these are perfect to be served at the dessert table with coffee. They are easy and fun treats to take home or to enjoy in just a bite! Display on either with a stick handle or arrange them together on tiers like a wedding cake.

3. Dessert Bars: Having a buffet style dessert table gives options and variety for guests. Ideas to feature include mini fruit tartlets, chocolate fondue, or even a homemade family dessert – guests get to choose what they are in the mood for and is useful for those picky eaters! For a summer wedding, consider a fun ice cream sundae bar – a good option when there are going to be guests with gluten allergies.

Honeymoon Destination | Newport, Rhode Island

Honeymoon Destination | Newport, Rhode Island All Photographs taken by Catherine.

Newport is a lively town that you’ll never want to leave! Even though it’s small, there is a plethora of things to do and see. Wander the grounds of historic mansions, see the Tennis Hall of Fame, eat some New England clam chowder, and enjoy the gorgeous views of the Narragansett Bay. You can also relax, grab a meal, and browse the unique boutiques downtown before catching a baseball game!

This town’s claim to fame undoubtedly lies in the lavish and exquisite Newport mansions. Located along the gorgeous cliff walk, which is an absolute must-see for all visitors, these mansions are sumptuous to an extreme. You could spend days walking along the cliffs, exploring these stately homes, and learning about how the wealthy lived during the Gilded Age. These mansions and the cliff walk are a short bike ride away from the downtown Newport area.

Part of Newport’s charm lies in the fact that it is a walking town. Everything in the downtown area- the hotels, the restaurants, the baseball field, the boats, etc- is within an easy walking distance. Strolling along the quaint streets with your sweetheart, watching a gorgeous sun set over the harbor is the perfect way to spend a romantic evening in Newport.

Since it’s right on the water, boating is obviously a popular pastime! Renting a boat is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Boat past the striking Claiborne Pell Bridge, keep an eye out for the Newport Harbor lighthouse, and you are sure to have a great time. There’s nothing like the freedom of boating and the feeling of being out on the water! Rentals start around $40 per hour.

Whatever you choose to do in Newport, you’re bound to fall in love! From the delicious seafood to the beautiful architecture to the rich history of the town, there are plenty of things to enjoy on your visit. The classic New England atmosphere and stunningly beautiful homes and scenery are sure to steal your heart.

Annapolis Engagement Session | Abby Grace Photography

So sweet is a love grown in the city of Annapolis… And for Heather and David, their romance blossomed while David was attending the United States Naval Academy! We absolutely love their beautiful Annapolis Engagement Session captured by the talented eye of Abby Grace Photography ! We’ll let Abby take it from here:

“Heather and David met in Annapolis whilst David was attending the Naval Academy, so what more perfect of a location for their e-session? We met up at dawn on a Monday morning so the town and campus were completely quiet, leaving us with endless possibilities for photos. They were SO adorable together- playful, fun, and completely in love. Heather’s outfits were gorgeous, David completely adored her, and the light throughout their session was perfect. They’ll be married at the USNA Chapel next February!”
