Meet Our Sponsors – Sofia Negron Photography

We’re excited to revisit our Meet Our Sponsors series today, and introduce readers to Sofia Negron Photography . Aside from being one of Merci New York’s advertisers, Sofia has worked along Merci on a slew of professional and editorial projects, including this NYC Bridal Fashion Shoot , and our recent collaboration in Nonpareil Magazine . We’re honored to have her as a sponsor, and look forward to sharing her work and story with you…
Tell us a bit about you!I am a total city girl. I thrive on the energy and creativity of New York, and have lived all over town from the Lower East Side to the Upper West Side, {and parts of Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens}. I first came to New York City as a dancer, and worked with the Eglevsky Ballet and various other independent companies, before performing with the Royal Ballet in Cinderella at the Met. In 2001, I set foot in the darkroom for the first time… and I have been in love with photography ever since. Meet Our Sponsors – Sofia Negron Photography What inspired you to develop your photography business?
I was testing the waters of photography in 2001, and found myself in the darkroom, falling in love with so many aspects of the process: Telling a story with a series of images, thinking quick on your feet, feeling and anticipating what is to happen next, the influences of fashion, the social connection with my clients, I could go on and on. Ultimately, I fell in love with wedding photography. Getting to know the dynamics of a couple and meeting their friends and family are the highlights of my work. Meet Our Sponsors – Sofia Negron Photography What is special about your work?
When I work on a wedding, I capture the bride and groom as both individuals and as a couple… I focus on showcasing their celebration as well as special, personal moments with family and friends. When my couples look back on their wedding day, their photos immediately show them who they were, what they loved, and the people who shaped them at that moment or stage of their lives. Ultimately, my photos allow people to look back years after the wedding with a certain giddiness, and remember all the special reasons why they love their spouse. Meet Our Sponsors – Sofia Negron Photography What do you love most about your job?
I love getting to know people. I love being around other people, feeling their energy, seeing who they are and what they do — and photography allows me to live in that element.

Why should Merci’s readers work with you for their wedding?
Because of the personal connection I develop with my clients. I am unobtrusive, friendly and fun. Getting to know who my clients are and developing a relationship is integral to my style and success of the photos. I bring a wealth of experience to the table, I am well-versed in different types of lighting, and I can create beautiful imagery in a variety of spaces… Whether your wedding venue is non-traditional, classic, urban or elegant — I’ve worked with them all, and create beautiful images that capture you, your spouse, and the very special time that is your wedding. Meet Our Sponsors – Sofia Negron Photography Where else can we find your work?
Aside from my Web site and blog , my photos have been published in Bridal Guide Magazine, The Knot, Philadelphia Wedding, Philadelphia Inquirer, Entre Magazine, The Baltimore Sun, andBrides to name a few.
I have photographed in Chelsea Piers 60, The Xchange, The Ritz Carlton Battery Park, Midtown Loft, The Academy of Music, Four Seasons, The Lighthouse and various other ballrooms, theaters and convention centers.
My event clients include Neiman Marcus, MANNA, Global Green, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Magazine, Vox Amadeus, Medical Meetings Magazine, Wistar Institute, The Mann, Shut Up and Dance and various other corporate and non-profit organizations.
You can also find me on Facebook , or chat with me on Twitter .

Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration

Happy Monday morning everyone! Last week, I had the pure pleasure of attending “Mingle in the Morning,” an event hosted by Great Performances at 620 Loft & Garden . The morning fete provided such perfect inspiration for a late summer soiree, that I just had to share all the juicy, colorful and delicious details with you… After all, is there a better way to start the week than with some bright, cheery and all-out epic eye candy, courtesy of Manhattan’s finest event artists and vendors?
Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration 620 Loft & Garden is among the most serene event spaces in Midtown Manhattan. Perched above Rockefeller Center, the outdoor garden opened at 8 am to Great Performances’ events industry guests. While we were treated to some truly refreshing food and drink {more on that in a bit}, the venue held its own as well, boasting a sun-drenched view of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the neighboring skyscrapers.
The crisp green and yellow tablescapes were graced with a slew of late summer florals, courtesy of Floralia Decorators . I was immediately smitten by owner-designer Peter Grontas’ use of cheery craspedia, crisp grasses and bursting sunflower blooms for the decor. It was the perfect representation of a late-summer garden party — and wonderful inspiration for all you Summer 2011 brides out there!
As the morning broke way to a beautiful summer day, we were serenaded by the softly elegant tunes of Elan Artists’ Bon Musique , who provided perfect accompaniment to a wonderful affair…

Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration You need not travel to Columbia County to enjoy the Katchkie Farm bounty. Katchkie is a fixture at the Rockefeller Center farmer’s market {act fast since this Friday is their last showing}! As you can see, I left with many goodies for my weekend dinners!

Andrew’s seasonal honey crop is generated from hives atop rooftops in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, and found at the Rock Center greenmarket each week. Click here for more details. Great Performances Mingle in the Morning | Events + Inspiration Did our second set of images get you hungry? Well, perhaps that was the point…
If you didn’t read my captions, all the delicious sips and bites for the Morning Mingle were made from farm-fresh, organic ingredients from Great Performances’ own Katchkie Farm .
Katchkie Farm is a year-round organic farming operation owned by Great Performances. An industry first, Katchkie represents commitment to celebrating local flavors while supporting sustainable agriculture and good earth practices — and the results are absolutely delicious.
The farm sits on 60 acres in Columbia County, NY, but also remains a fixture at the Rockefeller Center Greenmarket , which operates Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from the Rock Center pavilion… so even if you got this far down our post without having an event plan in sight, you can still enjoy its delicious bounty for one more week this summer!
Hoping you enjoyed all the wonderful eye candy and New York City event inspiration! Until tomorrow…

Merci New York’s No-Sew Bridal Headband DIY | Nonpareil Magazine

Merci New York was thrilled to provide fashion styling for a Art Nouveau themed photo shoot that is currently gracing the pages of Nonpareil Magazine’s latest, Issue #5 . We pulled our looks through Kleinfeld , and worked alongside an all-star cast of key New York City wedding professionals, including Lindsay Landman Events , Sofia Negron Photography , Facetime Beauty Concierge , Double Happiness stationery and Chocolate Blossom Cakes , just to name a few…
Merci New York’s No-Sew Bridal Headband DIY | Nonpareil Magazine The Nouveau-themed shoot took place in the Tea Room of the Prince George Ballroom in midtown — and as always, we had a blast coordinating inspired looks that were indicative of the era, without appearing too costumed or dated. We’ll touch base with more from the shoot in a few weeks {including some great behind-the-scenes shots and additional, unpublished looks}! But in the meantime, we wanted to share a detailed step-by-step for the fun “No Sew Bridal Headband” Merci New York created for the bride’s look. This edgy-glam design translates far beyond bridal and is just so easy to create…

Merci New York’s No-Sew Bridal Headband DIY | Nonpareil Magazine Supplies
plain, unadorned flat metal headband
one yard neutrally toned grosgrain ribbon
two yards gold metallic netting
white millinery feathers
fabric glue
Merci New York’s No-Sew Bridal Headband DIY | Nonpareil Magazine Instructions

1. Beginning at the base of the headband, tightly wrap the neutral grosgrain ribbon up the band, working on the diagonal. Finish by securing the remaining grosgrain around the base with a touch of fabric glue.
2. Craft the netted “florette” by pinching and twisting the metallic netting approximately every four inches, as shown in photo.
3. Secure the florette to the grosgrain band by tying a second piece of netting around the center of the florette.
4. Affix a tiny drop of fabric glue to the base of about four or five millinery feathers. Place feathers amid the gaps of the florette by lacing the stems in and out of the metallic netting, as shown in photo. Wear your headband and look fabulously chic!

Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons

Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons Once you’ve decided whether to wear Oscar or Vera and chosen which Cipriani’s to hold your reception, it’s time to start planning your honeymoon. Above all, you want the trip to be romantic, but you also crave culture, excitement, and luxury. From the lavish five-star accommodations to the amazing wildlife, an African safari is an unforgettable way to start your married life together.

One of the things discerning New York City couples love about planning a luxury African safari honeymoon is that each and every detail is high-end and completely customized based on your personal preferences.
Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons When planning your African honeymoon, it’s important to be realistic about everything from your budget to your personal preferences—and don’t forget about the preferences of your new spouse! He or she might have different ideas of an ideal vacation than you, which is why it’s always important to compile individual lists and then compromise on each element of your lists.

Here are 5 things Merci’s readers need to consider before booking a honeymoon safari:

1. Your budget: Just like Manhattan real estate, African safaris can be expensive, but what you get in return in priceless. If you want a high-end, completely customized African honeymoon, your budget must be a minimum of $10,000 per person. This includes your airfare and transportation, luxury accommodations, superior services and amenities, private tours / safaris, intimate dinners, and each and every small detail that makes all the difference.
Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons 2. The time of year you wish to take your honeymoon: You know you have to book early to nab that coveted New York venue, but you may not know that depending on the time year you want to book your honeymoon to Africa, you could have to book anywhere from six months to over a year out. If you wish to experience your honeymoon over the holidays in December—a time of year as popular for safari travel as The Central Park Boathouse is for wedding receptions—you need to plan 12 – 18 months in advance to ensure your space in Africa’s most romantic and renowned accommodations.

We advise that you book your honeymoon as soon as possible so that each of your accommodation preferences can be met.

We also suggest that you plan on visiting Africa for your honeymoon in the months between July and November, as these months yield the most beauty and wildlife. Although many countries in Africa are year-round destinations, some months do offer greater wildlife observation and weather conditions.
Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons 3. Your accommodation preferences: Africa’s accommodations range everywhere from mobile tents to lavish five-star hotels, and luxurious chalets to romantic “tree houses.”

You Upper East Side gals thinking: “A mobile tent on my honeymoon? No way,” might be surprised to discover that although these accommodations are mobile, they are well-appointed, sophisticated, and intimate. It’s also important to consider that these mobile safaris usually only last anywhere from 2 – 5 days, which means you can stay in a luxury chalet or lodge for the rest of your stay in Africa. But, if you and your spouse are not the adventurous type, a mobile safari might not be for you.

Chalets are a great medium between a five-star hotel and a mobile safari. They have a permanent location, often incorporating elements of nature in their design and boast 19thcentury safari décor and romance. Most chalets have an open design which enables air and other natural surroundings to incorporate themselves within these spacious and private accommodations.
Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons 4. Your activity preferences: Always wanted to compare the white beaches of Mozambique to the cool shores of East Hampton? Has one of your lifelong dreams been to view the Big Five on safari? Are you interested in experiencing the bustling city of Cape Town or touring the infamous Table Mountain? Whether you crave adventure or desire a more peaceful and romantic escape, you must understand your preferences before booking your honeymoon to Africa.

Customized itineraries provide you the best of both worlds. Whether you want 80% of your trip to be relaxation and romance with 20% of your trip comprised of adventurous activities, or vice versa, a personalized itinerary has the ability to accommodate your specific needs.
Guest Post: Hills of Africa Luxury Safari Honeymoons It’s also important to be open and honest with your African travel agent your activity preferences. A great African travel agent will get to know you and your spouse and understand your personal needs and desires, and provide you with the best advice for your luxury honeymoon.

5. The length of time you wish to stay: Whether you want your honeymoon to last for two weeks or a month, you need to plan your destinations and activities based on the time you have in Africa. It’s also important to consider length of stay when planning your budget to Africa.

Also, you will have more time to devote to activities if you remain in the same region of Africa as oppose to moving throughout the continent during your stay. This is why it’s important to understand your transportation options and how much time each option will take away from your activities.

Safe and Stylish Travels!

Real New York Wedding | Julia + Daniel at The Foundry

Good morning, everyone! Today I am thrilled to share a beautiful wedding that was photographed by the amazingly talented Karen Wise , at one of my favorite New York City venues, The Foundry .
Julia and Daniel were looking for a non-traditional space to hold their 100 person winter wedding. The Foundry was their first {and only} site visit. After they walked into the center of the cozy yet cavernous space, their minds began buzzing with ideas, and they booked the venue on the spot. As they say, sometimes you just know.
The 19th century building was originally – you guessed it – a foundry {a facility used to melt several kinds of metals down into molds}. Its brick walls and exposed beams still whisper of its industrial past, but the beauty of the Foundry lies in its chameleon-like ability to transform for all sorts of occasions, be it a photo shoot in its bi-level courtyard, a charity event around its rafters, or an elegant wedding, like Julia and Daniel’s, on a cozy winter weekend… take a peek.

Officiant: James Covington , New York, NY
Gown: Diamante by Pronovias
Shoes: Martinez Valero at Kleinfeld
Hair: Martha Ellen Mabry , New York, NY
Makeup: Rebecca Casciano , New York, NY
Invitations: Hello Lucky! , San Francisco, CA
Flowers: Jessy from Fleurs , New York, NY
Catering & Cake: Tip of the Tongue Long Island City, NY
Music: Ceremony and Reception, Mike Bedkowski
Favors: Bem Casados by Bem Me Quer Desserts , Astoria, NY
Accommodations: Morgans Hotel , New York, NY
Honeymoon: Chile, Argentina, and Brazil {planned and booked by the groom}

From the Bride:
Daniel and I met in law school in New York City. We live in Brooklyn and our families are also in New York. The Foundry was the only site we looked at and we knew right away that it was perfect for us. We wanted something different from the usual catering hall and were looking for something a bit edgy, as opposed to the traditional crystal chandeliers, etc.
We did not hire a consultant, we actually did everything ourselves. It was easier than we expected, but afterward we realized there were some details we overlooked. For example, we should have hired someone to do special lighting because the Foundry is rather dark.
Purple and silver are my favorite colors and I thought they would be a great fit for a winter wedding. Our invitations were “Pinecones and Roses” by Hello Lucky! They were letterpressed in plum/champagne, and had a wonderful, wintery feel to them.
I wore an ivory gown by Pronovias and added a silver sash to the gown {which I found on Etsy}. I also wore David Yurman drop earrings, a pearl and silver bracelet ordered from Etsy, and Martinez Valero shoes
Our DJ played some of our favorite songs throughout the evening. The processional song was “November Rain” by Guns & Roses, and the recessional song was “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay. Our first song was “A La Primera Persona” by Alejandro Sanz… We continued the evening with dance music, including lots of Latin and Brazilian songs {my husband’s mother is from Brazil}.
We did not have a sit-down dinner, but more of an extended cocktail party, and we tried to preserve as much dancing area as possible. We placed long tables with benches into the Foundry’s arches and had a few tall cocktail tables, but most of the room was a dance floor. The florist hung lanterns with candles from the balcony level. The upper level was designed with more of a lounge feel with low tables and floor cushions.
Our signature cocktail was a passion fruit bellini which we created together with the caterers. During cocktail hour we passed seared tuna on wasabi blini, potato pancakes w/crème fraiche and caviar, and baby lamb chops. Then had a raw oyster bar, caldo verde soup shots, whitefish salad on pumpernickel toast, braised short ribs over quinoa and pulled pork sliders.
The wedding cake was decadent… it was chocolate with passion fruit mousse. One small cake was made for us to cut and the same flavor was made into individual chocolate bombes for the guests. We ended the evening with traditional Brazilian wedding favors called “Bem Casados.” They are little cakes filled with dulce de leche, wrapped in purple and silver tissue.

About the Photographer:
According to a recent story from the New York Times, Karen Wise “treats your wedding like photojournalism,” striving to capture all its creative aspects, including the food and the decor. Karen has received critical acclaim for her work, and uses her “documentary and artistic style to capture and tell a beautiful story in the most honest and creative way possible.”
In 2008, Karen was named one of American Photo Magazine’s top wedding photographers in the world. In 2007, she was ranked by The Knot as one of the top 10 New York Wedding Photographers. With over 10 years of wedding photography experience, Karen shoots as near as New York, and as far as India, always with a unique elegance and detail to her work.
Karen’s photography has been published in Vogue India, Marie Claire China, Martha Stewart Weddings and Town & Country Weddings, among others. She has offices in New York and Los Angeles.

p.s. a very big congrats from Merci to Karen Wise on her recent engagement ! xx!
