Cakes that Inspire | Chanel Cake by Pink Cake Box

Cakes that Inspire | Chanel Cake by Pink Cake Box As we all know from the influx of cake design shows these days, there are cakes and then there are CAKES. And while many are stunning and striking, I think we can all agree that this one is truly just beyond. The darling Audrey-esque model, the ever-so-chic pearls and some Chanel goodies to boot? Yes, please!
Submitted to Merci New York by Anne Heap of Pink Cake Box , this carrot cake with meyer lemon buttercream won the “Show Stopper” award at a competition called “Art of Cake Design” sponsored by the Somerset Art Association in Bedminister, NJ. Judges included Sylvia Weinstock and Colette Peters, and in fact, show buzz suggested that this was the best carrot cake some have ever tasted.
Imagine that?! Gorgeous design and great taste? Maids of honor take note- this may be the sweetest, chicest bachelorette or shower cake in Manhattan.

Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay

As many would guess at first glance, we’re constantly enamored by the pairing of chic, classic style in a very modern New York City setting. So needless to say, when Ara of Rock Paper Scissors Events sent along this particularly fabulous photo shoot, I was beyond ecstatic to share the details with you.
Set upon the rooftop of the de Gournay showroom in the Flatiron District, the concept was to mix a somewhat gritty, hard cityscape with a very pretty, soft and feminine “Marie Antoinette” inspired table. Quatre Coeur , Paper Eight and Allan Zepeda collaborated with Ara, and voila! the incredibly chic, Manhattan “Queen for a Day” story came to life.
“In a loft or rooftop setting you can always go super modern,” Ara explained to Merci New York. “But you can also do something even more interesting by bringing in some traditional and transitional pieces which are much less expected – which is what we did here.”
Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay The soft, tonal white feather is a subtle nod to the modern Marie Antoinette theme. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay Gorgeous handmade Chinoiserie and other fine wallpapers, fabrics and porcelain are the hallmark of the de de Gournay name. Here, their pieces beautifully accentuate the decor. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay Ara was originally inspired by the red velvet chairs. She wanted to do something unexpected and put them in a city backdrop to show how antique pieces can truly pop in a modern setting. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay The stunning and luscious centerpieces are raised on cardboard boxes wrapped in gold wrapping paper for added visual interest. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay The glassware is rented, as are the sunburst chargers, but the linens are standard fare and are made more interesting by an unusual and bright color pairing. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay The menus are supported by gold baking cups with fleur-de-lis cut outs using a paper punch. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay The luminarias have the same fleur-de-lis punch; some fabulous porcelain antique pieces tie in the chairs and complete the look. Wedding Inspiration | Queen of Manhattan Photoshoot at de Gournay And of course, the city landscape and Flatiron views complete the stunning, city-chic look.

What We Love Now | Jennifer Behr Headpieces

Some trends are safe to call fads. Rompers {my surefire summer ’10 romance}. Sperry boat shoes {Classics for the prep-set, but in neon patent leather, really?}. And {I know I’ll get some nasty snarks for this}… Wayfarers. I’m sorry, but you know it’s true.
Somehow though, I just cannot come to call embellished headbands a fad. They’re uber-glamorous, a little edgy and equal parts sweet and fierce. And when they’re done right — as in Jennifer Behr right — they’re probably the chicest accessory I’ve seen in a long time.
What We Love Now | Jennifer Behr Headpieces Truly, Jennifer Behr’s collection has it all: Her spring line is stocked with crystals set in dark metal and hand-stitched to ethereal silk chiffons, braided ropes, slick patent leathers and tough studs. But in contrast, her bridal collection is demure, sweet and perfectly classic. Hmm, the dichotomy of every city bride. You’ve got to love that. What We Love Now | Jennifer Behr Headpieces The line has been a big hit with the celebrity elite {Lady Gaga wore the standing lace tiara - as a mask – to an event last month} and bridal editors remain equally {and understandably} smitten season to season. Even if the pieces aren’t your go-to wedding day style, they’re sure to strike a chord somewhere in your styling repertoire.
What We Love Now | Jennifer Behr Headpieces So what are Merci’s picks? Scroll to the top. It’s tough to get over the petite striped crystal and pearl headwrap {at left, $142}, it’s such a pretty way to dress up a ponytail. And the Ursula tiara , {at right, $1,250}, a thick, structured branch tiara of chunky Swarovski crystals, is a bit sea witch-esque. Paired with some wavy beach hair and a romper {i kid}, well… I wish I had that packed for my Grecian honeymoon.
The Jennifer Behr collection is made by hand in her studio and within a network of small workshops in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The line is sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and my favorite little boutique extraordinaire, Colette in Paris.

Fresh Favor Idea: Flower Market Gift Tables by Good Life Events

Still searching for the perfect summer wedding favor? Take a peek at this hot new trend developed from the popular dessert bar concept: A wedding flower market, compliments of Aleah and Nick Valley at Good Life Events …
The West Coast’s husband and wife team wanted to revamp the gift table trend, and were inspired by the colorful sweetness of European flower markets. Guests are invited to assemble their own bouquets and seed bags, or just take home a lovely terracotta potted plant. It’s fresh, it’s fun, it’s colorful beyond belief, and it’s a perfect fit for any summer wedding style or genre.

Destination Wedding Dress Tips | A Q&A with Kleinfeld

As a prelude to Liz and Colin’s Martha Stewart produced wedding at Sandals Emerald Bay , I had the pleasure of chatting with Jennette Kruszka, Director of Marketing and PR at Kleinfeld . Jennette and I stood by at Liz’s final fitting, and I was glad to snag some tips from her on picking out your destination wedding dress, as well as some insider advice on the Kleinfeld experience as a whole.
Check out our Q&A below and feel free to comment with additional questions for Jennette… Here’s hoping this holds everyone over until Merci New York can disclose Liz’s wedding dress details this October {in tandem with Martha Stewart Weddings’ fall issue}… Destination Wedding Dress Tips | A Q&A with Kleinfeld Merci: What aspects might a destination wedding bride want to consider when selecting her wedding dress? Are there specific fabrics, silhouettes she should consider or avoid?
Kleinfeld: Nowadays a destination wedding is not necessarily on a beach in the Caribbean. It can be a Vineyard in Italy, a ski slope in Vail, or St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.In Liz and Colin’s case it’s the sand! When choosing a wedding gown for a destination wedding in a hot climate, Kleinfeld recommends light comfortable fabrics such as silk organza, chiffon, taffeta or tulle. Slimmer gowns such a sheaths or slim a-lines are generally selected for a beach wedding however, a taffeta ball gown is also acceptable.

Merci:In your opinion, are there particular designers whose lines seems targeted or best suited for the destination wedding bride?
Kleinfeld: Most bridal designer collections include an array of fabrics and silhouettes that are acceptable for a beach wedding. Some recent designer collections that include lightweight fabrics are Badgley Mischka, Elizabeth Fillmore, Claire Pettibone, David Fielden and Reem Acra.
Destination Wedding Dress Tips | A Q&A with Kleinfeld Merci: It’s a destination wedding bride’s first fitting and she’s walking downstairs at Kleinfeld for the first time. What should she expect? What should she bring that local brides wouldn’t? What might she often forget?
Kleinfeld: At a first fitting the most important accessories to bring are shoes and undergarments. We cannot start the hem until a bride has her shoes. {In fact, even if a bride is getting married on the sand and intends to wear flip flops, she must bring them to her first fitting}.
For comfort, our fitters are able to build a bra into a dress or add cups. If she is a Kleinfeld bride from out of town {like Liz}, we can accommodate her with a three-day fitting. She would arrive on a Thursday and we will begin pinning the dress to sculpt it to her body. Depending on how much work needs to be done, we will then sew the gown overnight and tell her what time to come back on Friday. This happens again on Friday.
By Saturday, the gown will fit like a glove and we will prepare it for pressing and packing. By 6pm, she will be ready to leave with the gown, or we can ship it to her destination. {Some local brides also need a three-day fitting because they may have ordered the gown close to the wedding or they are not getting married in New York}.
Destination Wedding Dress Tips | A Q&A with Kleinfeld Merci: What is the “magic number” for fittings? How many are truly needed?
Kleinfeld: At Kleinfeld, a bride typically has three or four fittings. If a fourth fitting is needed, it is typically just to try on the gown to ensure fit. We will then press it and pack it.

Merci: How does Kleinfeld suggest destination brides travel with their gowns?
Kleinfeld: To ensure delivery, we suggest carrying the gown with you on the airplane and asking the flight attendants to keep in safe from wrinkles by hanging it in a first class closet.Try calling the airline ahead to see if they can make special arrangements. Shipping can be tricky due to customs regulations. Although we always press our gowns, if you do have to ship, we suggest you make arrangements at the hotel or a reputable dry cleaner who can press and steam the gown to touch it up.
Destination Wedding Dress Tips | A Q&A with Kleinfeld Merci: Are there any funny, interesting or noteworthy anecdotes about destination weddings that you might want to share with our readers?
Kleinfeld: In the past we have had brides bring their suitcase in and we will help them pack the gown right into their suitcase. We have also received phone calls from brides freaking out right before the wedding because of wrinkles. In an emergency, try using a blow dryer but keep the heat on low and do not put it too close to the fabric, you do not want to burn it and have a bigger emergency!

Merci: What are some key points to consider for selecting a veil and accessories that “sit with” your dress?
Kleinfeld: Keep in mind that the veil should not over shadow the gown. It is a mere accessory. Make sure your accessories enhance the beauty of you and your gown and don’t overpower and clutter up the look.

Many thanks to Jennette Kruszka for sharing her thoughts and advice with Merci New York’s readers!

What We Love | Gilded Goodness by Cabin 7

Have you ever become really excited about a small detail? A little something special? A token you just need to have?
Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Jen L’Italien from Cabin 7 at a pre-Stationery Show dinner here in New York. We chatted about her great blog and her new shop , which she opened a few weeks ago with childhood friend Chris Haber. It sounded amazing, so when I got home I took a quick peek. I found this…
What We Love | Gilded Goodness by Cabin 7 Um, amazing. {For about one million obvious reasons}.
Chris and Jen’s new line is a labor of love focused on the art of gilding and their passion for antiquing. The ladies scour flea markets near and far for charming vintage finds, then gild all their pieces by hand, applying the same method for oil gilding as furniture restorers use on antique pieces. The gorgeous results look something like this:
What We Love | Gilded Goodness by Cabin 7 And really, the design possibilities are endless. While the vintage gilded blocks would make a pretty addition to your mantel, desk or bookcase, I’m really loving them as wedding decorating details. Perhaps the couple’s names are spelled out at a sign-in table, their initials placed along a dessert display, or even that very cute “merci” is strewn along tiers of favors… And those gilded cardholders? Menu cards, place settings… you get my point! Rustic, yet chic. Simple, yet special. Love that.
What We Love | Gilded Goodness by Cabin 7 The ladies update their site regularly, so be sure to check out the Cabin 7 shop for even more gilded goodness!

Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding

As you know, I’m thrilled to be down in the Bahamas covering Liz and Colin’s amazing wedding celebration at Sandals Emerald Bay Resort . It’s the “day-before-the-big day” here in Great Exuma, and it certainly couldn’t be a prettier one. Liz and Colin are out enjoying the beach with friends, and the Martha Stewart Weddings crew is buzzing away, putting the final touches on what will certainly be an amazing affair.
While the excitement grows and the afternoon gives way to a beach-side rehearsal dinner, I thought it would be fun to share some of Liz and Colin’s other wedding day prep… like the flurry of fun activities that took place on an entirely different {bustling, busy, and very citified} island less than two weeks ago. Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding Liz needed a touch up for her big day, so I tagged along to interview her stylist… I expected to gather all the standard goodies for you: tips on wedding day tresses, how to battle frizz, the regular. But I didn’t expect to have so much fun in the salon chair.
I guess that’s because I never met the famed Paul Labrecque, stylist to the celebrity and social elite, and owner of Manhattan’s three hottest salon and spas.
I imagine even a bang trim is a party when Paul’s doing your hair… Within moments, Liz and I were wrapped up in a world of celeb hair, misbehaving models and runways gone wrong. Liz left with fab highlights and I left with a wealth of expert information to share with you {as well as a mental note to wear waterproof mascara the next time I plan on laughing so hard}.
Anyway, here’s an excerpt from our Q&A. As for the runway chatter, well, you’ll just have to book a visit for that. Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding I joined Liz at Paul’s newest of three locations, situated on the third and sixth floors of the ever-chic CORE: Club , {an exclusive private membership-based lifestyle club on 55th Street between Madison and Park}. You don’t have to be a club member in order to receive Labrecque’s high-end services at CORE, though Liz certainly got star treatment as Paul began foiling her tresses.

Merci: What’s the most common request you hear from brides?
Labrecque: “Brides always say ‘For my wedding, I want to look like myself, but better,’ so we always suggest a consultation about six months before the wedding day. We leave the length and talk about color. Then we give the bride time to get used to the changes, and highly suggest a final touch-up two weeks before the wedding.” {Labrecque advises that cameras are notorious for picking up dark rings at the roots, so a two-week touch-up is a very important step}.

Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding Liz gets a quick shampoo and trim

Merci: How interconnected are diet and hair health? What should a bride change in her diet to ensure beautiful wedding day hair?
Labrecque: “At the end of the day, you are your genes, but eating foods with vitamin B12, like olive oil and avocado, will definitely strengthen your hair.” {For a quick wedding day fix, Labrecque also suggests adding hair pieces or extensions for a fuller look}.

Merci: What are the biggest trends you have seen in bridal hair styling? Which seem to be the most universal?
Labrecque: ” ‘Uncontrived’ seems to be the word of the moment. It’s always harder to create styles that appear haphazardly put up rather than overly ‘done.’ Low, soft chignons are very popular, as are softly swept back styles. We saw a lot of those at this year’s awards ceremonies.”

Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding A final trim and blow dry make for a very happy Liz.
Merci: For destination wedding brides like Liz, do you always suggest they wear their hair up {in case of wind}?
Labrecque:“We always welcome pictures and photos of what the bride wants first. It’s good to get rid of the options that her hair can’t pull off, and concentrate on making other styles work. For destination weddings, we don’t necessarily need to pull her hair up. If she’s keeping it down, we often add extensions and pieces to natural, long hair for a windy day. There’s less teasing, less spray, and you know exactly what you are getting into.”

Merci: What is the one tip you give your stylists when they are working with a bride?
Labrecque: “Be clear with the bride. There shouldn’t be any surprises”
Wedding Day Hair Tips with Paul Labrecque | Liz + Colin’s Wedding All ready for the Bahamas!

Recognized by Vanity Fair as one of the countries Top 3 Stylists, Paul Labrecque’s three award-winning salon and spa locations in Manhattan continue to offer the best of New York beauty without pretense. To learn more, or arrange an appointment, click here .

Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding

Well, today’s the day. Liz and Colin, winners of the Martha Stewart Weddings Sandals Destination Wedding giveaway , are getting married and Merci New York is covering it all from beautifulat beautiful Sandals Emerald Bay .
The beachside wedding decor looks absolutely beautiful… and I cannot wait to reveal all the gorgeous details this fall, when Martha Stewart Weddings destination issue hits newsstands. Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding Yesterday was Liz and Colin’s wedding rehearsal, led by Darcy Miller, editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings. Since most of us aren’t lucky enough to have Darcy map out our ceremony details, I sat down with her after the rehearsal to learn how to organize an expertly planned practice session… Here are a few of Darcy’s tips, along with some fun images from Liz and Colin’s rehearsal.
Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding 1. Don’t wait until the day before your wedding to think about your rehearsal. The ceremony is the most important part of a wedding – it’s when you truly become a married couple. Try to tackle any outstanding issues in advance, so your rehearsal is just as enjoyable as your actual ceremony.

2. Be sure to arrange a meeting with your officiant at least a month before your wedding. Talk about how he/she can help you personalize your greetings, and let the officiant know what parts of the ceremony are important or special to you.
Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding 3. If you’re planning a destination wedding, chances are you will organize at least one scouting trip to talk about food, decor and other elements. Make sure you meet your officiant at this time; maybe take them for a cup of coffee. Unlike your hometown priest, rabbi or minister, a destination officiant needs to get to know you in order to personalize your wedding. So don’t be shy, share your stories!
Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding 4. From the placement of guests in the pews or seats, to the entrance of the bride and groom, the wedding ceremony requires quite a bit of choreography in order to run smoothly. The Martha Stewart Weddings Web site has a great “ceremony basics” page, showing traditional guidelines for seating arrangements, procession, ceremony formation, and recession depending on your faith. Be sure to check it out here !
Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding 5. Include your wedding party in the rehearsal planning {and for that matter, the wedding day}. Arrange for ushers to escort guests to their seats. Hand your ceremony and wedding day timeline to your maid of honor and ask her to keep an eye on the timing. No matter how organized and detailed you are, you won’t want to worry about logistics on your wedding day. {In fact, even Darcy hired a planner for her wedding, and I count her to be the most notable expert out there}.
Rehearsal Tips with Darcy Miller | Liz + Colin’s Wedding 6. Do not feel like you need to arrange your ceremony a certain way, just because it is wedding etiquette. Ultimately, this is your wedding day. The most important thing is to do what is right for you.

Many thanks to Darcy Miller for sharing her tips and advice with Merci New York readers!

Merci at the Martha Stewart Weddings + Sandals Destination Wedding

So I admit. I’ve been holding off on a secret. {I know, I know, it’s definitely not like me to stay tight-lipped around any fab wedding-related details, however}… here it is. On this beautiful, sunny morning, I am writing this post from here: Merci at the Martha Stewart Weddings + Sandals Destination Wedding Gorgeous, sunny Great Exuma in the Bahamas. {And yes, that’s my actual view}. I’m enjoying this amazing island as a guest of Martha Stewart Weddings and Sandals Resorts , who have partnered together to create six exquisite wedding themes for destination brides.
Over the next couple of days, I’ll be gathering all the juicy tidbits you need to know about the beautiful new resort, the absolutely stunning wedding packages, and {wait for it…} the sure-to-be spectacular wedding of Liz and Colin, the lucky winners of the Martha Stewart Weddings Sandals Destination Wedding giveaway . They’re here in the Bahamas for an all-expenses-paid wedding customized by Martha Stewart’s team at Sandals Emerald Bay . Amazing, no? Merci at the Martha Stewart Weddings + Sandals Destination Wedding These past weeks, I’ve trailed the Martha Stewart Weddings team all around New York City, going to dress fittings, hair appointments and ring selections with Liz and Colin {see Darcy Miller’s post on the Bride’s Guide, here }. I’m thrilled to finally share a “behind the scenes” look at all the pre-Bahamian prep, as well as some inside scoop on this amazing locale.
And if that’s not enough, this fall, Martha Stewart Weddings will reveal the details of the wedding in their destination issue, and I will also be featuring exclusive coverage {and additional images} of the event, right here on Merci New York.
So stay tuned now and later. I promise, it’s sure to be fabulous.

Real NYC Engagement Session | Lisa + Ben

When Wrinkle In Time Photography submitted Lisa and Ben’s engagement session to Merci New York, I instantly fell in love with their images for two very different reasons. First, I really dug the creative juxtaposition of the soft garden and gritty city locations {both beautiful backdrops, both very New York}… and second, I was pretty much over the moon for Lisa and Ben’s playful chemistry. Just take a look at these photos… the jumping, the leaping, the hide-and-seek. They almost remind me of kids in a playground!
