By now, we all know the sock bun. It’s chic, it’s sweet and it’s oh-so-easy for summer. But does it really work for weddings?
Last week, Merci New York had the pleasure of going behind the scenes at the Henry and Michelle Roth runway show at Kleinfeld , where stylist Johnny Gaita had created a stunning update on the style – a ballerina bun wrapped in tulle! {Seriously, how cute is that}?! Johnny showed Merci’s Jackie Weppner how to recreate his genius look in three easy steps. Take a peek at Johnny’s tutorial below!
“First grab Oribe Dry Texture Spray and apply it to the root of dry hair. After applied grab a flat mixed bristle brush and pull the hair towards the center of the head {on the back of the crown}.”
“I wrapped the hair with a bungee cord which isn’t necessary – regular hair bands work also but don’t have as much hold,” Gaita said. “Then I gently pulled a bit of the hair at the crown to keep the look from being too harsh. The volume makes it more wedding-appropriate.”
“Next, I put in bun filler / sock bun pin stuffer… If you don’t have a hair ‘donut’, you can use cloth around the ponytail.” Gaita said. “Make sure that you do a good old fashioned teasing job on the ponytail. Tease in big sections and pin into the bun filler, then wrap the hair with tulle.”
“Continue to rough up the hair in front of the bun for a more carefree/ textured look,” says Gaita. “Finish it off with a touch more dry spray. And that’s it!”

Makeup artist William Murphy created a soft yet fashion-forward look for the runway. "Keep the eyes soft and adds lots of mascara. It's more flirty." Murphy said.
