Helping People Find a Better Path

As I write this, I’ve just returned from the east coast, in what proved to be an intense but fruitful time. So many people I met on this trip were in the throes of severe crisis, looking for a way to navigate their need with a loving Father alongside. Some had recently lost children to tragic accidents, one was about to lose her child to a congenital medical condition. Others were battling guilt from past religious experiences, or loneliness after no longer feeling connected to the congregations they used to attend.

No, I don’t try to fix all of that in a few hours or a few days, I simply look for a way to walk alongside people at that point in their journey and encourage them down the better road. If grief is isolating them or turning a couple against the other, I look for that path where grief promotes healing and encourage them to go that way way. If they are trying to earn their healing with one more prayer, or pretending to have “faith”, I help them relax and entrust all that to Jesus’ love for them rather than their own effort.

In every uncomfortable situation we stand at a crossroads. One path leads to greater freedom and life, the other to greater pain and destruction. Sometimes people can’t see the path to life and that’s where we can help point it out to them in simple encouragements. It isn’t always easy to see, but it leans toward trusting God to do in us what we could never do for ourselves.

I just put up a new blog today about handling the truth with love, which is part of my continuing series on The Phenomenon of the Dones.  That dovetails with this encouragement quite well. If you haven’t seen it, you can find it here .

Would You Rent Your Bike To A Total Stranger?

Would You Rent Your Bike To A Total Stranger?

Do you have a couple extra bikes in your garage that you wouldn't mind loaning out to make a little extra cash? Liquid is a new online marketplace that lets you list and find bikes to rent, whether from individuals or bike rental shops. Liquid makes it easier for you to meet up, exchange bikes, handle payments, and just generally have a good renting experience, whether you are the renter or the lister.

On the rental search page, all you have to do is type where you want to ride and Liquid gives you the best bike rental options for that location. Currently, you can narrow your search by bike type, such as mountain, road, or fixie, and rider height. Once you have found a bike you are interested in, you can either message the owner for more information or choose the time and date of your reservation and checkout. The bike owner confirms the rental and you're all set to ride. The Liquid messaging system enables you to handle any final details internally.

If you'd like to list your bike on Liquid, just snap a few pictures and share your idle ride to make some extra cash. It's free to list and you can accept rental requests when it's convenient for you. When your bike is dropped off at the end of the rental period, Liquid deposits money into your account.

Much like Airbnb, Liquid depends on reviews to provide a self regulating level of security. Reviews give you a good idea of which bikes and which people are best to not only rent from but also to. If your bike is damaged or stolen during a rental period and the renter is unable to reimburse you for the fair value of your bike, Liquid will cover the cost up to $5000, arguments about fair value aside.

Originally branded Spinlister, Liquid is currently live in the US but also now accepting listings from anywhere in the world. The current inventory is definitely varied. A search for Mill Valley shows everything from an extremely unique Egg Bike to a fabulously pink Marin full suspension mountain bike.

Does the name change mean Liquid is going to move into crowd-renting all types of things including other outdoor gear? Time shall tell. I am also curious how this will affect, if at all, lifetime warranties on frames. For example, if I rent my carbon fiber Trek mountain bike out to someone and they crack the frame, can I still get Trek to replace it?

Would you rent from or list your bike on Liquid?

Trillium — The Three Person Stackable Hammock

Trillium — The Three Person Stackable Hammock

A hammock big enough to comfortably sleep three people? Check. Infinitely stackable so you can store gear, bring dogs or even extra people? You bet. Meet the Trillium hammock from Tensile, where multi-floor outdoor living environments are now a real possibility.

Used on its own, the Trillium is the most hardcore triple hammock on the market. Reinforced by 20+ meters of seatbelt and secured by heavy-duty ratchets and webbing, the hammock provides safety, stability, comfort and of course, a great bird’s-eye view of the forest.

The Tentsile line of tree tents are made to be suspended between trees, but in dry conditions can also be pitched on the ground like a conventional tent. Whether you are looking for an all terrain camping solution, a safari safe house, a mountain or beach retreat, or a portable treehouse that avoids all planning restrictions, the ski is the limit.

The Trillium can be used underneath the Tentsile Stingray and Vista to hold clothes or blankets up against your back to keep you toasty warm in cold weather or as a spare Vista floor. It has all the fittings to accommodate a Vista top–unlike the other Tentsile tents, the Trillium does not come with a flysheet or tent mesh itself.

The Trillium hammock weighs 13 pounds and offers up 80-square-feet of lounging space. You can choose from a green, 240-denier nylon fabric or a heavy-duty PE black mesh.

The Trillium hammock retails for $250 and is available now. For every Tentsile tree tent purchased, the company plants three trees with WeForest.

I want one of these in my backyard–what a great suspended outdoor office it would make.

Anna Weinrich loves scavenging flea markets for vintage knick-knacks, and her home is a haven of new and old Danish design. She uses a lot of marble, cork, stones, homemade art and chestnuts as accents in her apartment, for some reason she is crazy about chestnuts, maybe because they’re the same color as teak wood, which she also adore.

Thinking Outside the Box

I attended a local consultation over the last two days regarding community transformation. The promotional material said it was “a roundtable gathering of Christian leaders looking at church outside the walls.” I didn’t really expect them to mean it. But one of the questions we sorted through on the first day was, “What is the problem with church as we know it?”

We were given some interesting statistics to ponder. This from a book By Reggie McNeal titled The Present Future

The current church culture in North America is on life support. It is living off of the work, money and energy of previous generations from a previous world order. The plug will be pulled either when the money runs out (80% of money given to congregations comes from people aged fifty-five and older), or when the remaining three-fourths of a generation who are institutional loyalists die off or both.”

Or this:

“From 1990-2001 the number of people with no religious preference has doubled.”

Or this:

In research done by Thorn Rainer regarding those who are born again in America, he came up with the following percentages:

Those born before 1946 (Builders) – 65%

Those born between 1946 and 1964 (Boomers) – 35%

Those born between 1965 and 1976 (Busters) = 15%

those born between 1976-1994 (Bridgers) – 4%

Or this:

David Barrett, author of the World Christian Encyclopedia, estimates that there are already 112 million ‘out-of-church Christians’ around the world – 5% of all who call themselves ‘Christians’. He expects this number to double by 2025. “

This kind of information is coming from all over. I received this quote in a letter from an institutional bunch:

New Zealand author Alan Jamieson in his book, A Churchless Faith, has been studying this phenomenon for years. To his surprise, it is not the ‘normal churchgoers’ who are leaving the church: 94% of the Christians he has interviewed who are currently without a church were in positions of leadership or responsibility, such as deacons, elders, Sunday school teachers – and 40% of them were once in full-time ministry. And the vast majority of these did not leave as an act of abandoning their faith, but precisely because they wanted to preserve it and saw the religious system as a detriment to their spiritual growth. Many people who cannot conceive of anything other than the traditional church-oriented Christianity, the movement is unsettling or even frightening. It may well be one of the most exciting developments in recent years.

So what are we to make of all of this? At least a number of people are seeing the irrelevance of institutional Christianity as it as evolved into this century. Of course most of these studies hope to encourage Christian institutions to reform the box so that those who’ve left will come back in.

In the end, that’s where our discussion ended after two days. People trapped in the box just cannot see outside it long enough to know that there are some incredible ways to live out this Christian experience without wasting so much time, energy and resources on the machinery our culture has come to equate with Christianity?

For the most part, I am convinced the box is a deterrent not only to growing in intimacy with Christ but also in engaging the culture with the reality of who Christ is rather than the baggage of Christianity. But I was also reminded that there are a lot of people who really love Jesus and are seeking to follow him who are still in that box. They are trying to make the most of it, not realizing, that it is getting the best of them.

At the same time, I know some who would quote the statistics above as proof of a world-wide movement of people seeing through the frailties of the box and are abandoning it for a greater relationship with God and with other believers. They point to this information as proof that they are right and others caught up in the system are wrong. That would be a mistake. People coming to be part of a movement will only create another box in time and still miss the relationship Jesus wants most with them.

Wouldn’t it be better if we got our eyes off of systems and hope about movements and fix them squarely on Jesus? Do what he tells you to do. Follow where he tells you to go and encourage others to do the same. Then we’ll simply be the church in our day, with a variety of expressions as God shows us how to share his life together and how to make his love known in the world.

Re-Kånken–The Most Sustainable Backpack

Re-Kånken–The Most Sustainable Backpack

If you don’t own a Kånken yet, you might be one of the last holdouts. Swedish brand Fjällräven made a name for themselves in the US with these small, colorful, iconic packs. For Fall 2016, the company introduces two newcomers to the Kånken family that in their own unique ways are renewing the backpack–the Re-Kånken and the Kånken No. 2 Black.

Fjällräven launched the Kånken back in 1978 to help prevent back problems seen amongst Swedish school children. The extremely strong Vinylon F fabric makes it almost impossible to wear out, while its design is timeless and the characteristic rectangular shape means that there is almost no production spill. The Kånken’s legendary durability made it a symbol for Fjällrävens sustainability work going forward.

But Fjällräven was not happy to simply stop there and decided to design not just a sustainable backpack, but the most sustainable backpack in the world. The result is Re-Kånken–a revived Kånken produced in a new loop system that uses as little raw material, water, energy and chemicals as possible.

The Re-Kånken is made using one single thread of 11 recycled PET bottles for the entire backpack–fabric, webbing, and even the embroidered logo. The color is set using a spin-dye technique that radically reduces the amount of water and chemicals used in production. This all works together to facilitate recycling and gives the backpack a distinct monochrome look that sets it apart from the original.

The  Re-Kånken is available in both full-size (16 L – $90) and a Mini model (7 L).

For the urban types, the Kånken No. 2 Black is made from durable, waxed G-1000 heavy-duty fabric with leather details. This hard-wearing everyday backpack is also available in a laptop model with a separate padded compartment for your 15-inch MacBook.

Track of the Day: Mat.Joe’s “Synthphony” Is a Dancefloor Detonator

Mat.Joe are definitely ones to watch in 2016. The Berlin-based duo, aka Matze and Johannes, are firing at the moment, delivering a string of underground club house cuts for labels like Lee Foss and Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations, Hottrax and OFF, among others.

This week, the ascending pair present their latest two-tracker, the Brothers in Crime EP, on Berlin’s own Mother Recordings. On the flip, the standout “Synthphony” pops with cyclical drums and plucky retro stabs that urge you to get out on the floor and dance.

How many times have you traveled with your GoPro , throwing all parts randomly into your bag, only to have to dig through all your stuff just to find a different mount? Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

Megan, communications/marketing & Andy, ski design engineer

Sum-up of the wedding vibe: A weekend-long outdoor celebration in the Cascades.

Planned budget: $20,000

Actual budget: $24,000

Number of guests: 130

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

Where we allocated the most funds:

The biggest expense was the venue , which housed all of the wedding events and most of our guests all weekend long. It was a tough check to write, but totally worth it to have the venue all to ourselves for the full weekend and having all of our friends and family nearby.

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married? Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

Where we allocated the least funds:

Believe it or not, the flowers! My mom and aunt are both incredibly talented florists. As our wedding present, my mom paid for the flowers, and she, my aunt, and an army of family and friends totally transformed the venue—and me—with these beautiful creations. It was truly so much more beautiful than I ever could have imagined.

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

A few things that helped us along the way:

Not having a wedding party cut down on a lot of logistics, and not getting too fancy when it came to food and beverages. We were originally planning on a PNW-themed salmon dinner, but ended up serving delicious/casual tacos instead. It was half the cost, everyone loved it, and it filled our guests’ bellies before the party began. For booze, we bought three kegs from the local brewery, served nicer wine at dinner and for the toast, and then switched to cheaper wine as the dancing got started. We realized that most people won’t remember what you serve them—they will only remember if you run out.

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

My best practical advice for my planning self:

Prioritize a few things you really want during your day and then let the other pieces fall into place. If you’re flexible on how the little details will look, tap your friends and family—sure, there is a chance it could turn out different than you originally pictured, but in my case, our day was a million times more gorgeous and special than I ever would have thought possible.

Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?Ever Wonder What Happens When the Florist’s Daughter Gets Married?

Favorite thing about the wedding:

That so many friends and family helped create different aspects of the wedding: my mom and aunt did the flowers, Andy’s dad married us, my dear friend made the graphics of the invitation and glasses based off my favorite artist, and my best friend created my necklaces.

The levitating computer mouse is a reality

Russian designer Vadim Kibardin has created something as cool as a levitating wireless computer mouse. The Bat is a set that consists of a base – mouse pad and floating mouse with a magnet ring.

One of the goals of this product is to prevent and treat the contemporary disease Carpal tunnel syndrome (Median nerve dysfunction / entrapment), which many active computer users can be prone to.

The levitating computer mouse is a reality

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which there is pressure on the median nerve – the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand. It can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers.

Alice Unchained

My recent blog on Just How Deep Is This Rabbit Hole , inspired a friend of mine to put the finishing touches on a poem she has been working for about five years. I enjoyed it at the same time I related the struggle and the new found freedom that lies at its end. Many of you will recognize her references to various terms we use around Lifestream. I reprint it here with her permission

Alice Unchained
By Betty Tormino

Twisting, turning, stomach churning,
Mama’s got a brand new bag?
Twirling, whirling dervish, yearning,
When can I remove the gag?

Down the rabbit hole I’m tumbling,
Where’s the light I used to know?
Icarus with feathers crumbling,
Will the Father really show?

Red pill, blue pill, sounds like Whoville‚
Is this where I want to land?
My voice, my choice, hopes that I will
Find myself within his hand.

Falling, calling, mind is stalling,
Ignorance is really bliss?
Searching, lurching, questions perching,
Oblivion deserves my kiss?

Flailing, sailing, headache wailing,
Father’s just a hope away?
Bottom’s coming, senses numbing,
Fear is love that’s gone astray?

Fog is lifting, burdens shifting,
Formulas are working here?
Truth is that I’m wheat for sifting,
Now my nakedness is clear.

Sudden landing finds me standing
Looking for the exit sign.
Now appearing, mirror searing,
This reflection is it mine?

Image melting, metal smelting,
What remains after the dross?
Like a Dali painting folly,
Will my life survive the loss?

Doorway beckons within seconds
Bidding me to enter in.
Path to follow, leaves me hollow,
NATO* journey now begins?

New life starting, old one parting,
Paradigm has made a shift?
Human efforts gone like Stepfords,
Trusting Him will mend the rift.

Daisy picking, petals drifting,
Suddenly is child‚s play.
Time for walking, shut up talking,
Mind’s renewing everyday.

Daily teaching, his love reaching
Helping me to grow in Him.
Five years cresting, Alice resting,
Getting it‚ is sinking in.

Now I’m dialing, calling, flying,
Hoping that the plugged in hear.
Love that’s freeing, living, breathing,
The rabbit hole’s no place to fear.

USA Today Writes Again

USA Today Writes Again

The cover story in today’s LIFE section of the USA Today is entitled “ The Shack Opens Doors .” What an article! It is mostly accurate. What’s more the spirit of it and the insights into Paul’s life will minister to people whether or not they ever get or read the book. I love that!

Do-All Survival Blade: BK9 Backwoods Chopper

Ethan Becker has been designing outdoor equipment, from climbing gear to fixed blades, longer than I have been alive. His particular genius comes in the form of perfect details.

Do-All Survival Blade: BK9 Backwoods Chopper

The Becker Handle, a design that has graced many of his fixed blades from a variety of companies over the years is straightforward and superb.

My current favorite Becker design, which, admittedly, is like picking a favorite among my children, is the BK9. It is currently produced by KaBar.

Great, Affordable Chopper

The knife itself is one of the best and most affordable choppers on the market, found as low as $89 online.

It is a massive slab of powder-coated steel. Stacked up against other choppers on the market, the BK9 ranks among the best despite a price tag that is half as much as some of its fancier competition. Don’t look for bleeding-edge steel or stag handles.

This chopper is a beefy survival knife that can handle all kinds of wood-processing tasks. It’s called a Bowie knife by the company, is a little shorter than most machetes and can do lots of bushcraft tasks with ease.

Do-All Survival Blade: BK9 Backwoods Chopper

The entire blade is highly functional, and the money savings come in the form of skipping frills as opposed to compromising on performance. The full tang Cro-Van 1095 is not just serviceable, it works very well, absorbing beatings like a pair of shocks.

It can get a bit chippy, but careful use and a good sharpening can overcome this issue to some degree. Similarly, the plastic molded handle is both comfortable to use and fills the hand for confident chopping, but it is not as bulletproof or beautiful as a micarta or G10 handle. And it pales in comparison to a stag handle, but again, it really, really works.

Do-All Survival Blade: BK9 Backwoods Chopper

However, there is one thing that is both cheap and a poor performer on the BK9. That would be the dreadful nylon sheath. A basic off-the-shelf design with a rigid plastic insert, the sheath is just junk. Fortunately, Ka Bar offers a kydex sheath as an upgrade option.

After-Market Upgrades

Ka Bar is not the only one making accessories and upgrades for the BK9. Like with all Becker knives there are a huge number of folks making new scales (even some nice micarta ones) and a lot of folks making upgraded leather and kydex sheaths.

Value Knife

The core of the BK9 is an incredible value and a great chopper. If you want to try your hand at a wood splitting, material destroying chopper, but don’t want to go broke, the BK9 is your knife.

DIY | Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Seating Card

-Sponsored Post-

It’s all about the little details. The extra special touches that will make your event truly unique. To embellish this tablescape, I didn’t want to use just any chargers or napkin rings… so using the same scallop design from the candle wraps my designer and I created this DIY Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Set. The best part is that the napkin ring actually doubles as a seating card; our Cricut Explore Air is to blame for this projects fabulousness of course.

Click HERE to find the full styled wedding inspiration shoot that this project is from!

DIY | Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Seating Card

The Pen Tool

In case you didn’t know, you can actually put a pen in the Cricut Explore Air and it will write whatever you want! Which is what we did for this project…

DIY | Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Seating Card

SUPPLIES:

  • Cricut Explore Air
  • 8.5″ x 11″ Cardstock or 12″ x 12″ Cardstock
  • Cricut Pen Set
  • Adhesive
  • Napkins

Import Into Design Space

Download our free SVG file at the end of the post and upload it into Cricut Design Space. The napkin ring is 2.5″ x 7″ naturally, but you can drag the files to make them larger if you need to. Here are the Design Space steps:

  1. Add a “text” layer and type each persons name (I used Cricut font “Chloe”).
  2. Size the text over the blank area on the bottom of the design and make sure that in the layers panel the “write” icon is selected.
  3. Select the individual napkin ring and the text and hit “attach”. This tells the Cricut to write the text on that specific part of the napkin ring.

Do those 3 steps above for as many napkin rings as you need to make!

DIY | Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Seating Card

Cut + Write

Once you’ve got your text and design figured out, put your choice of pen into the Cricut, press GO and watch it do it’s magic! Then carefully remove each napkin ring from the cutting mat.

DIY | Scalloped Charger + Napkin Ring Seating Card

Assemble

Add your favorite adhesive to the backside of the design and wrap around your choice of napkin! Super simple right?! If making these for your wedding or a large event, you might want to delegate someone to wrap these the day of, so that they don’t get squashed in transit.

  • 12″ x 12″ Cardstock (must be 12 x 12!)

Import Into Design Space

Download our free SVG file at the end of the post and upload it into Cricut Design Space. The charger is sized to 11.5″ round and so you’ll need to use 12″ x 12″ cardstock for this item. Here I’m showing that you can edit the color, to keep you organized while cutting.

Cut + Remove

Your Cricut is really doing all the hard work for you with this project. It will take around 10 minutes for this file to be fully cut. After it’s done, carefully remove the charger from the cut mat and then clean up the left over cut bits… then display under your choice of plate!

Since all you need is paper… this project is super cheap and crazy easy, which means you won’t feel bad about throwing the items away after your event!
