POC AVIP Back Protection Jersey With Koroyd

POC AVIP Back Protection Jersey With Koroyd

Spinal injuries are more common in the sport of road cycling than you might think–usually the result of a forward fall over the handlebars when heading downhill, whether from slippery roads, excessive speed, being hit from behind, or a catastrophic failure in equipment. Although perhaps not quite as common as in mountain biking, why shouldn’t road cyclists seek protection from potential spinal injuries?

When POC launched the AVIP collection last fall, it was all about making road cycling safer. Besides developing high performance helmets, there were a number of new apparel and accessory products created to bring attention and visibility. Long a part of POC’s mountain bike offering, back protection is now integrated into the AVIP line for road cyclists in 2015.

The AVIP Back Protection Jersey comes with an integrated back protector, offering a unique combination of protection, comfort, and performance. The shoulders and back of the bike jersey are made from a woven stretch fabric and have a compact 3D structure, while the body is made from a 4-way stretch fabric.

For the company’s mountain bike back protectors, POC uses a material called VPD (Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough). VPD is highly impact absorbent, comfortable, and conforms to your body. The material transforms from soft to hard upon impact, meaning it can be flexible and safe at the same time.

By contrast, POC turned to Koroyd for the road cycling application—the same material used in the Smith Forefront and Overtake helmets. The open cell structure of Koroyd is much lower in weight and guarantees excellent ventilation, something you want in a road cycling jersey. Extremely safe, the thermoplastic tubular cores crush in a completely controlled manner when hit, decelerating the energy from the impact and reducing the final trauma levels.

POC AVIP Back Protection Jersey With Koroyd

Announced earlier this year and since winner of many design awards, Koroyd’s EOP 2.0 back protector (pictured above) is very light and breathable, offering protection in all weather conditions. It can withstand hot and cold temperatures and flexes along your spine. The EOP 2.0 back protector complies with the highest safety standards and can be placed inside motorcycle jackets, jackets for skiers and cyclists, and special protective backpacks.

No word yet on price or the exact availability of the POC AVIP Back Protection Jersey, but we should have more details from Eurobike this week or Interbike shortly thereafter.

Top 5 Victoria Day Long Weekend Daytrips from Vancouver

Top 5 Victoria Day Long Weekend Daytrips from Vancouver

Planning a staycation for this Victoria Day Long Weekend?  Don’t worry – You can still get out of the city, soak up B.C.’s natural splendours and be home in time for dinner.

Here are five long weekend daytrip ideas.  All of these options are within a 90-minute drive of downtown Vancouver and emphasize the great outdoors.  Got more ideas?  Please comment below.

  • Whytecliff Park : This 15-hectare waterfront park in Horseshoe Bay is only 30-45 minutes from the concrete jungles of downtown Vancouver.  It features a small, sandy beach, cliffs plunging dramatically to the brisk waters of Howe Sound and even a little island you can swim to that sits just offshore.  For families, there’s a large grassy picnic area with changing rooms.
  • Golden Ears Provincial Park : For a glimpse of B.C.’s rugged backcountry, head to Golden Ears, which is about 90 minutes from Vancouver just outside of Maple Ridge.  Take a dip in the crystalline waters of Alouette Lake or opt for adventure on the network of trails that wind along rivers, waterfalls and high into the alpine country.

  • Reifel Bird Sanctuary : It’s amazing how many lifelong Vancouverites have never been to this 850-acre wildlife preserve in Delta , about one hour outside of Vancouver.  Trails weave through ponds and marshes and converge on the scenic Fraser River Delta.  Along the way you’ll see dozens (if not hundreds) of native and migrating bird species.  And you can buy birdseed at the gate for just $1.
  • Buntzen Lake : This 4.8-kilometer-long B.C. Hydro reservoir high above Port Moody feels like a hidden getaway but is only an hour outside of Vancouver.  It’s especially popular among families who picnic along the grassy shore and kids who swim in the calm water.  Nice hiking trails rim the thickly forested lake and climb into the surrounding mountains.
  • Deep Cove : The closest thing Vancouver has to a cottage community, Deep Cove is an idyllic little town nestled along Indian Arm, a glacial fjord that extends north from Burrard Inlet, about 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver.  Popular activities kayaking in the usually calm waters of Indian Arm, relaxing at waterfront parks or hiking along trails that climb into the mountains outside of town.

Pocket Size Portable Recharger Requires No Cords

Pocket Size Portable Recharger Requires No Cords

Goal Zero's latest portable recharger solution may be lightweight and affordable but is definitely big in power. The magic marker size Switch 8 fits in your pocket and when paired together with the Nomad 3.5 solar panel, will keep you fully powered up wherever you go.

The Switch 8 portable recharger is USB in and USB out so will work with any of your electronics that have a USB compatible charger such as your mobile phone, iPad, or even rechargeable headlamps like the upcoming Black Diamond ReVolt .

Goal Zero took it one step further with the Switch 8 and created a variety of customized caps that enable you to power lots of different mobile phone types or various gadgets directly. This means you can leave all those different charging cords at home when you hit the trail.

The Nomad 3.5 pocket size foldable solar panel delivers power to the portable recharger, fully charging it in 6-12 hours depending on the amount of sunlight available. The lithium battery can also be charged from your car, wall outlet, or even your computer. Pockets on the solar panel let you stow your gadgets while they are charging to protect them from falling off rocks or tents.

The Switch 8 portable charger retails for $50 by itself or $120 as part of a kit with Nomad 3.5 solar panel. Both will be available early this fall.

I am curious if everyone prefers the solar panel and portable recharger to be separate units as in the Goal Zero approach, enabling you to bring one or the other or both depending on the length of your backcountry trip, or do you prefer the solar panels built into the battery pack like the Brunton Restore ?

Hey ENOpians !

We’ve posted before about how we like to help people who help others, and boy do we have a good example here!

Scott Brelsford first crept onto the ENO radar with some awesome ENO photo contest entries a year ago. We saw all the fabulous places he visited with his ENO – Argentina , Brazil, Chile, Congo, Boston to name but a few – read about his eye opening hammocking experiences – escaping from a knife wielding mugger in Buenos Aries and sleeping in the tree tops in Boston – and laughed over his original ways to use a hammock – “‘hammock acrobatics.’ Backflips, front flips, 2 person backflips, handing upside down.”

Somewhere between these adventures, Scott joined the non-profit Sports4HOPE , an organization aimed to prevent and reconcile conflicts by inspiring hope, improving the quality of life, and empowering youth in conflict-affected areas through sports and peace education. Working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Scott and his team have permanent accommodations in the large hub Bunia , but have to travel to smaller, more rural villages (where a large part of the recent conflict has occurred) for up to a week at a time.

Realizing the villages would not have any accommodations for them, Scott had an idea and came to us with an interesting proposal! He explained what they were doing, how they were doing it, and where they would be traveling and based. Describing how they are still in need of bug nets even though they have been vaccinated, and how it will be the rainy season when they’ll be there, Scott asked ENO if we would like to donate the required items ( hammocks , rain tarps and bug nets ) to himself and his team members. How could we refuse?

After Scott’s team makes the initial connection with the villages, they work to introduce a soccer league that marks the beginning of a peace education program within the individual communities. Eventually, they will expand the soccer league to link all the villages they work with. An unbelievably inspiring mission!

Scott and his friend Stephen in some of ENOs donated hammocks!

We think this is an awesome project and are super happy to be able to help out! You can read more about the organization and Scott’s personal exploits on their Web site and on Scott’s blog, “ Kicks From Congo .” We will also provide updates from his progress as and when they come! Enjoy! And next time you’re in your ENO, just think that somewhere in Congo, Scott and his team are hanging in their ENOs trying to inspire peace.

We Love How This Couple Incorporated Their Dog Into Their Asheville Wedding

Once Kristin and Grayson decided on having an organic and relaxed wedding, it made total sense for them to also incorporate their dog Lucy in the festivities! Kristin and Grayson’s dog accompanied them down the aisle, stood loyally next to them during the ceremony, and was incredibly photogenic during the couple’s portraits by the lake. This couple’s Asheville wedding at Claxton Farm featured tons of delicate florals, naturally romantic décor with a hint of rustic flair, and even a s’mores fire pit and outdoor games to lighten the mood. We love how Hartman Outdoor Photography captured every detail of Kristin and Grayson’s wedding!

Creating a fun and relaxed natural environment was most important for us during our wedding planning. We wanted our guests to enjoy the outdoors and we didn’t want any decorations getting in the way.

We Love How This Couple Incorporated Their Dog Into Their Asheville Wedding

We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding in a location that is special to us. We love the atmosphere and vibe of Asheville, we love hiking and the outdoors, and it happens to be where we got engaged. We chose Claxton Farms because it showcases the natural beauty of the mountains while still providing a comfortable and accessible environment for all of our guests.

We had our dog Lucy as part of our ceremony. Lucy walked down the aisle with me and my father and she stayed with us during most of the ceremony. We also included her in most of our pictures–of course this meant that nothing was scripted, but that’s how we liked it!

Within the ceremony, we decided to take a few seconds to look out at our guests, our surroundings, and each other to simply take it all in and better process that momentous occasion in our lives. So many people told us that our wedding day would pass in an instant and we didn’t want to forget to be appreciative for the love and support we have been so fortunate to experience in our lives, and everything that came together that day. Seeing everyone we care about together with the beautiful surroundings created what will undoubtedly be a life-long memory.

Our wedding photographers were amazing in both talent, creativity, and demeanor. Josh and Shelley Hartman were calm and collected on our wedding day, making sure that we got all of the photos we wanted while also having fun!

If you get overwhelmed with details, think about the things that really matter to you: what you want to get out of your wedding day (i.e. the “big picture”), how you want your guests to feel, and prioritize those things. It may help to think back to characteristics you remember from the weddings that you may have previously attended for inspiration–both for things you like and those you don’t. Chances are, you won’t be able to recall the color of the napkins or even the flowers. Always take time to step back and look at the big picture before devoting time and money to the little details.

We Love How This Couple Incorporated Their Dog Into Their Asheville Wedding

We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and fun. A few ways that we incorporated this feeling were that we did not assign tables (i.e. promoting mixed groups), the food was served family-style and we had plenty of outdoor games to play to create a sense of togetherness on our special day.

Watch Those Lyrics!

I’ve sung it since I was a child. It’s a happy little tune about the second coming of Jesus. But this time I really heard it for the first time, and it shocked me!

A couple of weeks ago I was in New York with some incredible folks. One afternoon afteroon a group of us were in a home in New York together. A couple of people grabbed guitars and soon we were singing our way through some familiar choruses. That’s when this one came up.

Jesus is coming soon, morning or night or noon,
Many will meet their doom, trumpets will sound;
All of the dead shall rise, righteous meet in the sky,
Going where no one dies, heavenward bound.

As we sang it one line jumped out at me and seemed so incongruous with the celebration the song was evoking. “any will meet their doom??!?!?!” Unfortunately, that’s true enough at the end of the age, but why were we singing with such joy over that? I’m sure it breaks our Father’s heart, rather than sending him out on the dance floor skipping a jig?

When I pointed that out most people in the room hadn’t even realized what they were singing. They were into the happy beat and the larger message of the song of Jesus’ return. But we all learned something in that brief moment—how much religious passion can blind us to the love Father wants us to share with everyone around us. How can others facing doom ever be a source of joy or frivolity for us. Jesus showed us something so different when he wept over Jerusalem…

7 Types of Firewood

7 Types of Firewood

We’re well into campfire season, and many of us are traveling to different places for the holidays. Different places means different kinds of trees, so it’s important to know which types are better suited for firewood than others. Some may work great as kindling but burn too quickly to keep the fire going. Some may burn forever but are nearly impossible to get going without supplemental wood. Others are great to hang your hammock from but are better left alone when it comes time to build the campfire.

Here are 7 common types of firewood:

Oak

7 Types of Firewood

thegreenlivingforum.net

One of the most common types of trees, oak can be found pretty much anywhere. Although it doesn’t grow very tall, it can still get quite massive. It’s a very dense hardwood tree, so it burns for a very long time. Getting it started is the tricky part, though. Because of its density, it requires continuous high heat to really start it burning well. This can be done by using softwood, such as pine, to get a base going and then adding oak on top of the fire. And once it does get burning, there isn’t much maintenance that must be done.

Maple

hobbithouseinc.com

Maple is a deciduous hardwood tree with above average heating values. Although it is difficult to split, it is efficient and hot-burning. And like oak, it is difficult to kindle but burns strongly once it gets going. It also produces very little smoke, which is a huge plus for bonfire parties where a lot of people are going to be gathered around.

Cherry

alibaba.com

Another hardwood, cherry also produces little smoke. As a fruit tree, it also produces a sweet burning aroma that can be very pleasant on a fall evening. However, it doesn’t burn as well as other hardwoods – it only burns at medium heat, so it’s preferable for a night of mild temperature and weather.

Birch

7 Types of Firewood

photogalaxy.com

Birch trees are known for their unique bark, with several different species in their family. It’s a softer wood, meaning that it’s a great fire-starter because it burns very quickly. It also burns very bright and hot, producing the ideal amount of light to cook dinner by.

Pine

7 Types of Firewood

en.wikipedia.org

Another softwood, pine makes a great fire-starter. Because of its high sap and resin content, though, it should only be burned outdoors. If it is used as an indoor fire, there is a chance for creosote buildup inside the chimney that can cause a chimney fire. It burns messy – another reason to keep it exclusively as outdoor firewood – and smells great. Because it burns very quickly, you should not use pine as your only firewood.

Elm

americanlisted.com

Elm is a very dense hardwood that is very common in the Northern Hemisphere. It provides decent heat but is notorious for being very difficult to split. And due to Dutch elm disease , dead elm trees are found pretty much everywhere. The wood from these standing dead trees can produce good firewood because of how dry the wood is.

Chestnut

7 Types of Firewood

didierruef.photoshelter.com_.jpg

Chestnut is one of the worst hardwoods to use as firewood. It burns and splits easily, but it produces a small flame that burns at a low heat and throws out a lot of sparks and heavy smoke. Only use chestnut as supplemental firewood.

Track of the Day: Ronski Speed Creates Uplifting Beacon of Light With “Tyrion”

Ronski Speed has always had a natural gift for assembling tunes that have a direct pathway to both the head and heart. The German trance stalwart takes full advantage of this strength on his newest two-tracker, Tyrion, which has just landed on the label he runs, Maracaido Records. The titular cut is an uplifting beacon of light that sees him refracting emotionally charged melodies through a euphoric lens throughout its seven-minute duration. Softly waddling synths help set the mood, gradually building into an explosion in the sky made of lofty chord progressions and subtle drums. It follows Speed’s secret recipe for inciting those arms-extended-to-the-stars moments on the dancefloor.

From the couple: We wanted our wedding design to be minimalist. Fresh flowers, vintage glassware, and art courtesy of Sky Gallery. From the couple: For wedding day fashion, minimalism was again the theme. We wanted something modern, classic, and comfortable; no excess. Noella chose to work with an amazing local designer for her dress, and Dave built his look starting with a pair of Aldens he’d been eying. We wanted to look good, be able to dance, and avoid looking like traditional wedding toppers.
