A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower

A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower Now that’s a pretty sight to start your day, isn’t it? To be honest, I couldn’t bear to begin this post with words, because Margarita Corporan ‘s photography is so beautiful it speaks for itself… but as you might have guessed from the gorgeous blooms and bursts of color, we’re back with another beautiful flower market post on this February day. This story is beyond special, because the exquisite floral designer {and dear friend} Kathleen of kat flower is sharing her expertise with Merci New York’s readers, and also giving us an exclusive sneak peek inside all the wholesale flower market shops that provide the flowers for Manhattan’s most beautiful fetes…
A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower As you might know, the New York City flower market is located on 28th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post , the market has a days-gone-by feel to it, where everyone bustling up and down the block knows some sort of secret handshake that gets them the best flowers in New York. It’s what inhibits the average passerby from walking in and striking a deal far better than their average bodega find, and to me, it’s fascinating.
Below, Kathleen shares with Merci New York {some} secrets of the New York flower market, and why the best quality flowers at the best price are truly reserved for experienced designers…

To start, tell us about yourself… What sparked your interest in floral design? What do you love most about what you do?
Simply put, I love flowers. I spent most of my career as an event planner and producer, having the opportunity to work with some of the city’s best designers, and floral design is one of my most favorite elements of an event. I love that i get to chase beauty for a living — to be able to work and design with some of nature’s beauties, all for the purpose of bringing joy and/or expressing love is amazing. A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower What is the biggest reward in your job? The biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge is to capture the beauty, charm, grace and uniqueness of each element as well as what the customer wants. My biggest reward is when I get it right.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
Tough question because I feel like I’m still evolving and growing. I would say that my designs are fresh and seasonal, thoughtful, lush, textural, colorful with notes of romance and whimsy. A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower About the market:

The floral market can be an intimidating place if you don’t know how to navigate it. When you begin shopping the market, do you have a plan on action, or mental road map? How do you remain nonplussed amidst the chaos?
When planning an event or wedding, I often make multiple trips to the market for inspiration. these trips usually help me focus my direction. I’m usually drawn to one element {and it may be a minor player in the design} and let that element guide me. And the chaos…that just adds to my excitement.
A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower Is it true that most florists arrive at the market as early as 4 AM to select the best flowers for their job? How does a day in the life of a floral designer work?
When working on a wedding, floral designers usually pre-order flowers since we’re managing specific varieties and quantities. I don’t want to chance not getting flowers that a client has their heart set on, but on the off-chance that one didn’t pre-order or all your flowers didn’t come in {it happens}, the 4am opening is helpful. A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower Typically, a day of flowering/designing would be begin at 5:30-6 at the market buying flowers. Then i bring them to the studio for cleaning and conditioning, allowing each flower to drink {sometimes they’ve been out of water for 12 hours} and develop. Designing and arranging wouldn’t begin until hours later, sometimes the next day depending on the flowers. Weddings typically require 2-3 days of work, not including sourcing all the materials, etc.
A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower How do you ensure that you get the best quality flowers for your job at the best possible price for your brides? Is it a relationship game with the vendors? Knowing your market costs? A bit of both?
It’s a bit of both — knowing the market and your relationship with the vendors. Sometimes it helps to share budget details with vendors….you may be able to get a better price or they may be able to recommend a more cost-effective alternative. A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower We noticed that there is an “honor system” at the market, where you place your selects on a crate and come back after shopping elsewhere. This seems like a risk in Manhattan {or a return to days gone by}. Do people stick to the “rules”? Are there any other mores of the market that floral designers abide to?
Yes, that’s the way things are done and refreshingly, for the most part, everyone respects it. As for other mores, the vendors trust that you will buy whatever you put on the shelf, i.e. don’t put 200 peonies on the shelf then buy only 20…someone else may need those flowers and you would have screwed them and your vendor.
A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower We did this shoot at the end of the summer, but what flowers are you leaning to use for your winter arrangements?
I keep it simple. My favorite are quince blossoms. They’re perfectly full and sparse, all at once, making just the right statement for me.

If you were designing a winter wedding based purely on your design aesthetic, what would it look like?
That would require a few scouting trips to the market! But I would definitely use tree blossoms, full blooms like peonies and anemones, and feathers!

A Day at the New York Flower Market with Kathleen of kat flower A very big thank you to Kathleen of kat flower , for showing me and Merci New York’s readers all the nooks, crannies and nuggets of information behind the market! Another wonderful warm thanks to Margarita Corporan , whose photography truly astounds me. Thank you so much for taking these gorgeous photos, sharing the sneak peek we all wanted – and getting up so early with us!

Styled Shoot at the New York Flower Market

The New York Flower Market… it’s one of those one-off places in Manhattan that still maintains its old world charm. A little corner of New York where the “honor system” is still a way of business. Where having a relationship with the shop owners speaks volumes, and where you need to really know “the rules” to get what you want.
When I first began Merci, the flower market fascinated me. I don’t think it’s something brides know much about – so I thought we would share a few contributions that really dig in to its rules, mores and unsuspecting beauty.
Styled Shoot at the New York Flower Market Ah its beauty. This adorable styled shoot photographed by Amber Knowles and Blush Designs really shows just that. Amber, Blush and a tres-talented team of New York City stylists, artists and designers put together this darling shoots inside some of the market’s most reputable spots. I love the beautiful bouquet based around a light blue anemone, and the unique story to the vintage Carolyn Curtis dress… After enjoying all the eye candy, be sure to scroll down to the full floral inspiration and fashion story from the designers…

From the Designers:
We wanted a blue/purple color palette for our main bouquet, so that it would contrast from the greens and browns of the Flower Market. On the morning of our shoot we happened across gorgeous violet Anemone and Hyacinth, and loved the juxtaposition of the delicate Anemone to the structural bulbs of Hyacinth. The hair pieces were also made of the same flowers to compliment the bouquet.

Considering the natural elements of the Flower Market, we decided on a more organic styling. The lace dress is a completely cut-apart and re-worked vintage piece literally found in a box in a friend’s family barn. The light purple fingerless gloves are hand-knit. This adds a sense of history and uniqueness to the photographs that can be felt on a subtle level, without being overpowering or distracting. The whole outfit is textured and feminine; the chunky sweater and rain boots were chosen to make the outfit more appropriate for the setting, and also to serve as a balance to the delicacy of the dress. Our lovely model holds a copper watering can with pink Astible, adding color and an ethereal sensibility to her overall look.

Be sure to check back tomorrow to get a behind the scenes peek of the flower market in action!

The 2011 Wedding Party Event Recap | Part I

Last week, Merci New York has the pure pleasure of co-exhibiting at the Wedding Party event with Gabriella New York Bridal Salon . The event was co-hosted by Martha Stewart Weddings and the Wedding Library, and although we’ve been blogging about our unique event and fashion styling services for over a year, this was actually Merci’s first foray into wedding shows… The Palace Hotel was packed with enthusiastic brides, and we have been thrilled to field so many fabulous requests since the show! Take a peek at these photos from Sofia Negron …
When designing the booth, we wanted to showcase Gabriella’s beautiful gowns and accessories, plus Merci’s event and fashion styling services. So Merci designed an installation that presented photos from our portfolio {including a shoot with the ever-talented photographer, Elizabeth Messina for Delphine Manivet at Lovely }, and delicately displayed Gabriella’s dresses, accessories, hair flowers and pins at varying eye levels.
The 2011 Wedding Party Event Recap | Part I Bottom: Here’s a great little photo of me and my Merci New York girls! If you were at the event, you saw the Merci girls circling outside of the Martha Stewart Weddings wing, where our booth was so graciously housed. The girls gave little goodies to our guests, and spoke about our varied event and fashion styling services, from full-service design, down to engagement shoot styling and production, well-planned dress shopping assistance, day-of bridal dressing, and MUCH more . The 2011 Wedding Party Event Recap | Part I While you probably know that Gabriella has beautiful Ulla-Maija gowns and Sarah Gabriel veils and headpieces {like those shown above}, you may not be aware that she also stocks stunning, one of a kind vintage jewelry, too! We really wanted to show these off, so Gabriella’s gorgeous accessories sat in beds of blush carnations around a custom designed tablecloth that played up the vintage jewelry accents with little bits of metallic, but also muted the overall design with soft ballet pink details. Swag bag time! Did you know that Merci New York designs these little guys, too? {Drop me a line and we’ll tell you more about our welcome bags}. Gabriella New York Bridal Salon and Merci New York co-hosted the VIP luncheon and styled the models for the affair. Each of the ladies at the luncheon received a Merci-designed tote from Gabriella and Merci. Inside, there were amazing goodies from all the vendors at the show. {Want a bag – see below for a fun little giveaway….}.
The 2011 Wedding Party Event Recap | Part I Above, brides enter to win $750 of accessories from Gabriella and $750 of styling services from Merci New York {quite the prize if you ask me}! Below, the Merci teams smiles with Amanda and Rosa of NewlyWish . {Both Gabriella and I are Newlywish partners.. We’re excited for some wonderful things to come with these ladies in the not-too-distant future}.

So… I did mention a giveaway, and I know I’m not getting off the hook without one. Comment below with your name and wedding date, and we’ll choose a winner at random to receive one of the darling VIP totes with custom calligraphy, packed with all the event goodies, plus a Merci boatneck tee {share your size} and an exclusive voucher for 15 percent off any Merci styling service .

A very, very big thank you to Sofia Negron Photography for capturing all these photos so beautifully.

What We Love | Emily Elizabeth Spring 2011 Collection

Ah, snowpocalypse, you are driving Merci mad!
Last night I took to the town in five inch patent peep toes {albeit with tights}, as my little way of saying you know what to all this snow. It was one of my stupidest moves yet, and while a crowd of fashionable gay men applauded my efforts as I shuffled down the sidewalks of the West Village, I almost broke my neck about fifty times. So, I’ve decided to take a less dangerous approach to boycotting this weather, with two tiny {yet lovely} little words: Spring Shopping.
What We Love | Emily Elizabeth Spring 2011 Collection Ultimately, I’m craving girly grosgrain, bright colors, and preppy, yet edgy accents. Something that goes well with a sundress, flip flops and a summer day. Something like the Spring 2011 Kaleidoscopic Collection by Emily Elizabeth Jewelry .
According to designer Emily Elizabeth Kolins, “This season, I wanted to bring in color and fun into my collection – pieces that counteract any ‘darkness’ that the wearer encounters with an upbeat and lighthearted style.” I hear ya, Emily.
Plated in 14k gold, the pieces retail for $30-$150 {awesome} and the ribbon necklaces and bracelets can be customized in a variety of colors {think bridesmaid gifts}.
I think I may pick up a few pieces and hightail it somewhere warm….
The new collection is available here .

1. Bee Studs , $30; 2. Horseshoe Ribbon Bracelet , $48; 3. Open Star Bangle , $65; 4. Star Ribbon Necklace , $140; 5. Adam Ribbon Necklace , $140; 6. Flat Flower Studs , $48; 7. Cards Necklace Set , $70.

Tuesday Shoesday | Topshop Steals

Tuesday Shoesday | Topshop Steals So, I know I’ve been getting a bit of {teasing} grief for only posting uber-luxe selects on Merci New York’s Tuesday Shosday features. {I can’t help it. The eye candy consumes me}.
Since I myself am no stranger to scoring a cute shoe at a great price, I’ve decided to switch it up…
These darling TopShop flats ring in at a wallet-friendly $40… and could very well be your requisite reception shoe, or a chic little beach wedding / honeymoon staple. They come with a cute, raw edge rosette toe and soft suede heel, yet still remain tres-bon for the budget!
I last spotted them at the Soho store, but they are available online, here .

Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids

This morning, I had an epiphany. Well, that’s a bit dramatic. More of a “realization.”
I noticed I only show the final product of our editorial work . The photos are undoubtedly beautiful, but as a stylist, the photoshoot process is my favorite part… It’s a jigsaw puzzle of pieces that must fit together and capture all the elements the client wants to portray, regardless of the elements {weather, staffing, etc} within a set time. It’s a lot like a wedding!
So today, I thought we’d give you a sneak peek of one such process – the Swoon Bridesmaid dress campaign, which I was thrilled to style alongside my friend and tres-talented photographer, Trent Bailey . While Trent was behind the lens shooting all things Swoon, Samantha Shay Photography captured the hustle and bustle of a photoshoot in progress… not to mention all the {fun} work it takes to land one ad page in Martha Stewart Weddings !
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Here I am {with my dorky, yet necessary} styling belt, making sure our model’s wardrobe and accessory is as perfect as planned… I’m joined by Paul of Facetime Beauty Concierge , who came on board for hair and make-up.
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Part of a stylist’s job is sourcing accessories and coordinating looks for each shot. Everyone has their own process; this is mine. I pulled accessories from Emily Elizabeth Jewelry , Monet Jewelry and Peggy Li Creations , then placed each look in a clear lucite box for easy handling.
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Here are the dresses, which flew into my home office from sunny California. Unfortunately for us, the weather in New York was less than stellar {flash floods and stormy skies!}, but we hoped for the best, so we could shoot in Central Park as planned. Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Here, our model’s curls set as Paul begins to work on her make-up. The gowns are steamed and ready to rock.
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids The finished make-up look {and a few test shots as well}. The team decided on a dewy and natural look that suited Swoon’s soft and ethereal brand qualities. Paul did a wonderful job! Bottom: When the weather gods failed to hear our prayers, Trent Bailey saved the day by arranging studio space for the early AM outfits. Not shown: The team continues their {no} rain dances. Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Trent shows Amy some studio images… and it seems like the shots are really showcasing the clothing well…
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Top: A sneak peek of a jewelry roll from Merci’s styling kit. {Even though I pulled accessories from designers, it always make sense to bring my kit for classic items and layering pieces}. Bottom: “Jumping in” between shots is a workout – but a well needed one. The smallest shift in accessories, hair or wardrobe can lead to thousands of dollars of retouching. Better safe than sorry.
Portfolio: Advertorial Shoot for Swoon Bridesmaids Weather gods, rejoice! We received a quick reprieve from the rain and quickly rushed uptown to Central Park to snag the shots Amy wanted. It was time to act fast and get solid, quality images in a short lead time!
After a full day of work, here are six of Amy’s final selects….

Real NYC Engagement | Katie + Tim

Today’s engagement session comes compliments of the bride, the lovely Katie Klumper. Katie and I chatted about her wedding vision a few months ago, so needless to say, I knew her engagement session would be spectacular before I even opened the files…
Katie and Tim’s brief to their photographer, Jennifer Sosa , was to capture the romance of the city, so they shot in Central Park, The Highline and Meatpacking District. According to Katie, as they started shooting, they ran into multiple couples all shooting in the same locations… Their objective was to do the opposite of everything they were doing, and put a fun spin on their day…
Real NYC Engagement | Katie + Tim Real NYC Engagement | Katie + Tim Real NYC Engagement | Katie + Tim How they met {by Katie & Tim}
If meeting in person isn’t enough, online dating really seals the deal. We always wonder what would have been the third meeting place…
Katie hails from Vancouver, Canada and moved to New York City in two years ago for a big, exciting advertising job {a la Mad Men style}. She fell in love with the city almost immediately, but her burgeoning career left little time for finding Mr. Crowell, um, I mean, Mr. Right.
Tim is originally from New Jersey and has lived in the New York area for many years. In all that time, he has always gravitated towards the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan where he once worked and continues to socialize. A warm, outgoing charmer, he dated frequently but struggled to find the right Katie, um, I mean girl.
But then late one night at his favorite pub, the Gaf, his eyes fell on a tall, beautiful woman with the most dazzling smile he had ever seen. Tim tried in vain to strike up a conversation with her, but she wasn’t paying attention. It didn’t matter, though; he was already falling in love.
A month went by, and Tim still hadn’t forgotten about The Beauty from The Gaf but he also didn’t expect anything to happen between them. Fortunately, fate stepped in to help things along… Tim and Katie soon stumbled upon each other’s profiles on Match.com!
Tim realized immediately that this was the same woman from the Gaf who had rebuffed him. Still, somewhat miffed that this terrific woman hadn’t immediately recognized him as a fellow terrific human being, Tim initially ignored her online advances. So when she asked him, “Do you know any good wine bars in the area?” Tim coyly replied, “Sure, I can send you a list of some great ones.” It may have taken her a little longer to see the potential, but Katie is one persistent lady, and she refused to give up on this tall, dashing man. So when she got his response, she rolled her eyes at her computer screen and shot back, “Or maybe you could take me out to one of them.” {Sometimes a guy has to be hit over the head before he realizes he’s found the woman of his dreams}.
And boy has he ever. And now Tim and Katie are looking forward to marrying the one of their dreams and celebrating with their nearest and dearest, in New York City…
