How would you describe your wedding theme?

Our wedding theme was a glittery combination of autumnal pine cones and handmade bunting with a moody Brecon Beacons backdrop. Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

What was your favourite part of your wedding?

Hands down our favourite part of the wedding was our vows and the readings. We had chosen our vows to be simple and meaningful, and it was wonderful having our family and friends there for our ‘I do’s’. My sisters read the lyrics to ‘And I love her’ by ‘The Beatles’….. yep that pretty much had me in tears from the first word. The Beatles have been a big part of both of our childhoods, with both our Dad’s being huge fans. Davy, one of our closest friends, read a beautiful poem with so much heartfelt emotion, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house! Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

Tell us about your Wedding Dresses

Ella’s wedding dress story –
So I went to a Wedding Fair with my Mum, and two sisters, the first one of the season in Cardiff City Hall. We had a mooch around all of the stalls, and we actually went to get ideas for venues, but Laura May had a stall with a very attractive sale rail! My dress was actually the first one that I tried on, and I remember saying to Mum, ‘But surely you’re not suppose to buy the first one you try?’. My sister Elise welled up and all three of them said they loved it. I tried on a couple of others, just to satisfy myself that this was ‘the one’ and after looking like a fluffy jacket potato in one, and a hobbit in another, I decided on mine. As there were a few repairs required, and my Mum is a VERY good seamstress, we had it for a steal. Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding Jess’s wedding dress story –
Jess went dress shopping with her Mum and one of her best friends, Charmaine, to Rowberrys ‘ in Swansea. She was really open minded, and thoroughly enjoyed trying on lots of different dresses before she picked her stunning dress. I remember picking Jess and her Nannie up after her fitting, her Nannie came out of the shop, flushed with happy tears and said ‘She looks like a film star’. We didn’t let each other see each others dresses before hand, but our Mum’s knew what each others looked like, just to make sure we hadn’t bought the same one! We couldn’t have picked more different styles; Jess went for a very Art Deco, ‘The Great Gatsby’ inspired dress, and I indulged my old Ballerina days and went for something with a strapless corset. Why did you choose your venue?

We chose Peterstone Court in Brecon because we loved the beautiful house and stunning surroundings without there being a feeling of awkward pretentiousness. Brecon is also equal distance from Swansea (where Jess is from), Cardiff (where we live) and Cwmbran (where I am from) so it felt like a perfect location. Plus who wouldn’t want to get married in one of the most beautiful places in Wales!? The cherry on the cake was also the fact that our beloved dog, Cooper, was allowed to stay at Peterstone Court. We had so much fun having him in some of our wedding photos, and he always loves being the centre of attention. Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

Tell us about your photographer

Our wonderful photographer is our good friend Abigail Apollonio and she was assisted by her equally talented husband, Matthew Williams, who was our videographer. As soon as we got engaged, we asked Abigail and Matthew when they were free as we were so keen to have them capture our big day. We had seen Abigail’s work and were blown away by the way she is able to grab those really intimate, and natural moments rather than the more traditional, structured pictures. Matthew has a wicked sense of humour and they made a fab team. They helped us both feel really comfortable and also managed to shoot the pair of us getting ready. This wasn’t easy when we were both in different buildings! Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

How did the proposal happen?

Our proposal story goes like this…. It was our second day on our holiday to The Big Apple and we had a typical American brekkie in a really lush diner up on the Upper East Side. Then we went for a walk across to Central Park and I had been thinking about where I would propose… I had a few ideas in mind but in the end thought that I would see which place felt right. There was a heat wave in New York that summer and it was scorching hot so having walked around for a bit, we sat down on a cute little bench opposite the Belvedere castle, near the Turtle pond. We were talking about how romantic the park was and how lovely and quiet it was and it dawned on me, ‘This is it, this is absolutely the right place and time’. So I took a (very) deep breath….. and I’m not quite sure how I worded it but asked her if she would marry me, and she said ‘of course!’

We decided to go engagement ring shopping there and then, so we hopped in a yellow cab and whizzed off to the Diamond District. Neither of us knew what type of ring we wanted, and we both went for completely different styles – like my wedding dress, I spotted mine straight away, I just knew it as soon as I saw it. We actually designed Jess’s while we were there and collected if three days later. The ring shopping was so much fun and for us New York was the perfect city to become engaged. Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

We had so many people help us with lots of aspects of the wedding; Jess’s Dad is a very talented artist and made our easel board table seating plan, amongst other things. Jess’s Mum made our delicious chocolate wedding cake & bara brith favours, my Mum made our top table bunting. Our friend, Angharad added marmalade to our guests favours and in addition to this, Starbucks in Cardiff Bay had graciously gifted us small bags of coffee beans for our guests, as a remedy for the morning after the wedding. We were so grateful for all of the help and support we had, and we really enjoyed flicking through Pinterest for ideas. Our table settings all had pine cones included in them, and its incredible what a couple of cans of gold spray paint can do! Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

What was your first dance & why?

Our first dance was to ‘Never can tell’ by Chuck Berry as featured in Quentin Tarantino’s film, Pulp Fiction. We both love films, and movie soundtracks, and the scene where John Travolta and Uma Thurman dance is one of our favourites. We didn’t want a classic, slow dance as our first dance, and we knew we’d enjoy this, plus it comes with its own dance moves so it was easy to get everyone else to join in! Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

Nope.

Do you have any advice for future couples?

Hmm, so our advice would be to stay true to what you want as a couple. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of others do/want, but I’m so glad we didn’t do that. We have wondered whether it was easier for us because gay wedding’s don’t come with the traditions that straight wedding’s do, but either way, we think this is really important when planning.
We also planned our wedding in a really short space of time, and in lots of ways this was great because we didn’t have time to agonise over small details; we made considered decisions quickly and stuck to them. Real Wedding: Jess & Ella’s Glittery Brecon Beacon Wedding

What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received?

Always make each other laugh and keep having date nights.

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

Probably the fact that we were both really interested in creating and designing a day that reflected us both – Jess is a softball player, and I am a hockey player, so we created some great photos to reflect this, and also had a softball bat/hockey stick arch that we walked under after our vows. We are also both fanatical cyclists, and love riding our Brompton bikes everyday – we had a real hoot cycling along in front of our venue in our wedding dresses, and have some amazing pictures that Abigail caught so brilliantly. Trek Dirt Series Women’s Mountain Bike Camp

Trek Dirt Series Women’s Mountain Bike Camp

I am a relative newcomer to mountain biking, taking up the sport about a year ago after being intentionally side swiped by a van while out on a road ride. From that moment on, I vowed to log more miles on the trail and less on the road, at least when in the Bay Area.

With minimal skills and a couple of epic wipeouts under my belt, I headed to the Trek Dirt Series women's mountain bike camp in Park City at the end of July. My goal was to hang out with a bunch of rad women for the weekend, learn basic skills in a supportive environment, and generally get more comfortable on my mountain bike. I wanted to start looking forward to and enjoying my rides instead of constantly gripping the handlebars in white knuckle fear.

Over 60 women turned out for the camp, many of them local from the Salt Lake area, with quite a few traveling from as far as Wisconsin, Michigan, Idaho, and Wyoming. We were spilt into 8 different groups based on our riding experience and type of riding (XC versus downhill). The mornings consisted of a variety of skills clinics held at the base of Canyons Resort (much to the amusement of many onlookers) and taught by some of the most amazing women in the sport, followed after lunch by afternoon rides where we could session our skills on real life trail situations.

Trek Dirt Series Women’s Mountain Bike Camp

Practicing my new skills riding with friends in Park City post camp

We learned everything from braking, switchbacks, straight line riding, front wheel lifts, roll downs, and drop offs. It would be impossible to remember and apply every technique, but I have taken with me a few keys points that have enormously improved my riding and comfort level out on the trail.

  1. In terms of bike setup, I have switched to flat pedals for the time being. The ability to quickly get my feet down has given me much more confidence to try new things. For moderate trails with tons of uphill riding, I will switch back to the clipless, but on more technical terrain, I will use the flat pedals until my skills improve.
  2. Probably the one most important lesson I took away from the weekend is to always look ahead. Whether it be riding over rock gardens, climbing over roots and other obstacles, trying to keep a straight line on bridges and teeter totters, or turning through tight switchbacks, looking ahead at where you are going is the key. As soon as you look down at your front wheel or the obstacle in your path, it's game over.
  3. Always have one finger, and ONLY one finger, on the brakes at all times.
  4. Keep your arms and legs relaxed and wide, not pulled into your body (unless riding uphill) or clinging on to the seat. This enables the bike to move beneath you instead of with you, letting you remain balanced and stable.
  5. If you are not pedaling, you should be in the neutral position, up out of your saddle with pedals parallel to the ground at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
  6. Keep your weight centered over your bike but be ready to shift forward or backward without collapsing your body when going over objects.
  7. The key to switchbacks is not only continually looking ahead at where you want to go but also turning your chest in that direction. This position will automatically pull your bike around with you.

I am way more comfortable on the bike and actually now look forward to practicing my skills when facing obstacles on the trail. I never thought I would be 1/4 pumping over logs, riding teeter totters, or cruising up and down tight switchbacks before that weekend. I guarantee I will be back for more next year and can't recommend it enough for any woman (or even man with the co-ed clinics) who wants to up their dirt skills, whatever your level.

Skida Fun and Colorful Headwear

Skida Fun and Colorful Headwear

My latest obsession is Skida –a Vermont based company that makes colorful and fun hats, neck warmers, and accessories to keep you warm during your fall and winter outdoor activities. Don’t worry guys–there are plenty of choices here for you, too.

Started by Vermont skier Corinne Prevot while she was still a student at Burke Mountain Academy, Skida quickly turned from a simple hobby making hats for her teammates and friends into to a full on business. Her mom, Margie, stepped in to help out while Corinne went through college, finally setting up HQ in Burlington upon her graduation in 2013.

The main Skida collection includes a variety of hats ($36), headbands ($16), neck warmers ($24) and other accessories–all available in a variety of fun and colorful prints. Puppies, anyone? The hats are made from a printed poly-blend outer fabric and fully lined with a cozy mid-weight fleece, working together to wick away moisture and cut the wind. The hats are perfect for chilly runs, under a helmet, or even just walking around town.

Skida Fun and Colorful Headwear

The neck warmers us the same printed poly-blend outer fabric to wicks away moisture, but are lined with a Polartec micro-fleece that is soft and warm against your face. For those that prefer knits, Skida features a 100% cashmere collection with hats and scarves made in Nepal.

Production is all done in northern Vermont (apart from the cashmere collection), supporting the local cottage sewing industry in a region with a rich history of garment manufacturing. It remains important for Skida to work with the local community in a number of ways. Another example is the Friends of Liz collection–all the proceeds go towards supporting Liz Stephen, Cross-Country ski racer from Montpelier, in her 2014-2015 winter season. With multiple World Cup podiums, World Championship top-ten finishes, and Olympic performances under her belt, Liz is among the top ranks of distance Cross-Country ski racers in the world.

You can order Skida products from the company website. Needless to say these would make a great holiday gift for just about anyone on your list.

The Trailer for Trainspotting 2 Has Arrived

The Trailer for Trainspotting 2 Has Arrived

UK cult cinema classic Trainspotting holds a special place in the heart of many a clubber. It features some particularly evocative depictions of ‘90s dance culture and is credited as one of the early sources of rave breaking through into the US. Naturally, excitement is high at the prospect of a sequel, finally more than 20 years later, and its first teaser trailer is here.

Director Danny Boyle has united the original cast for the sequel, which includes Ewan McGregor, as well as Ewan Bremner, Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle.

The sequel is based on author Irvine Welsh’s novel Porno, a Trainspotting follow-up that zooms in on characters Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie when their paths cross again a decade later. The script for T2: Trainspotting 2 was written by John Hodge, who penned the original Trainspotting adaptation.

Victorinox Secure Pro Unhackable USB Drive Knife

Victorinox Secure Pro Unhackable USB Drive Knife

Just in case you want to play James Bond and bring some top secret spy files with you in the backcountry this summer, Victorinox has released the Secure Pro Swiss Army Knife with an "unhackable" USB Drive. With a $150,000 prize on the table and two hours to try, even the world's best hackers have been unable to break the code.

The USB drive features 256 bit encryption together with Victorinox's patented single chip technology. The single chip is what makes cracking the hardware virtually impossible. Further security layers include biometric fingerprint recognition technology with a thermal sensor. This way someone could not hack off your finger and use it later to open your USB drive.

Like any good spy device, the Victorinox USB drive has been made tamper proof. Any attempt to pry it open will enlist a self-destruct mechanism that burns up the CPU and memory chip. So make sure you don't drop it down the side of the mountain or crag!

The secure USB drive is removable and will be available in three different sizes ranging from 8GB to 32GB. The Swiss Army Knife portion of the Victorinox Secure Pro includes an LED Mini White Light, retractable ball point pen, blade, scissors, nail file, screwdriver and key ring.

If you wanted to take your Swiss Army Knife from the backcountry to the boardroom, two more editions of the Secure Pro add remote bluetooth access, laser pointer for presentations and the ability to remove the blade to get it through airport security.

The Victorinox Secure Pro sells for $75 for the 8GB version up to $270 for the 32GB version.

Alpine Backpack Weighs Under 1 Pound

Alpine Backpack Weighs Under 1 Pound

UK company Terra Nova is well known for their high quality, ultralight gear. After releasing the Guiness World Record holding lightest tent in the world last year , the company is now set to release a line of ultralight backpacks made out of the same material.

The Quasar Backpack series uses the same super light and waterproof Ultra fabric as the world record holding Laser Ultra 1 tent. This cuben fiber based fabric offers an extremely high strength to weight ratio. The Quasar packs are reinforced with Dyneema and Cordura in high wear areas such as the base of the packs.

Dyneema thread is used to create strong bar tack points on webbing, while Coat 50s thread is employed for stitching the pack panels together. The Quasar backpacks feature an internal hydration pocket at the back of the extendable main compartment, with two stretchy side pockets for water bottles or extra gear.

Two pockets on the hipbelt provide easy access storage or can be removed if not utilized. The chest strap holds a high visability whistle in case of emergency, while the should straps offer two water bottle attachment points. The outside of the pack has even more gear attachment points for your hiking poles, ice axe, or helmet.

Both the lid and the back foam panel can be removed in order to reduce the Quasar backpack to its minimum possible weight. The 30L Quasar weighs in at only 14 oz.(0.8 lbs) at the minimum and 18 oz.(1.1 lbs) fully loaded. The 45L Quasar weighs from 17 oz.(1 lb)-21 oz.(1.3 lbs) and the expedition ready 55L from 19 oz.(1.2 lbs)-30 oz.(1.8lbs).

The Terra Nova Quasar backpacks will retail for $240-$300 depending on size and start shipping in February.

New England Mansion Wedding at The Overbrook House

New England Mansion Wedding at The Overbrook House

After a 27-hour drive in the rain from Texas to Massachusetts, Sarah and Patrick couldn’t have asked for a better experience than their cozy New England wedding at The Overbrook House . Sarah has a penchant for whimsical colors, which she seamlessly blended into the rustic setting. A graphic designer by trade, Sarah DIYed the majority of their wedding decor, even creating adorable coloring page place-mats for guests to get creative during dinner. The weather may have been a bit muggier than the bride and groom anticipated, but it didn’t keep photographer Jess Jolin from capturing romantic frame after frame of the happy pair!

THE RAIN. Oh the rain… We drove 27 hours through rain to get to Buzzards Bay. Texas to Massachusetts. The weather in New England had been unseasonably warm UNTIL the week of the wedding. I’m talking 80 degrees and sunny to four inches of rain. We ended up having to change just about everything in terms of logistics. We took the theme from Indian Summer to a Romantic Fern Gully and it couldn’t have been more enchanting.

The property is to die! Its a 1920’s Cape Style mansion on a hilltop with a white light lit stone path that leads to a dance hall. SOLD! We really wanted to keep everyone together and it was able to accomodate 28 people all in one spot. No hotels. No rules. We really weren’t into the thought of having a few hours to set up and then being forced out. With a weekly rental, we were able to take our time. It was basically a blank slate for us to DIY the heck out of. Which we did!

It was important to us to keep it true to who we are – a bit old fashioned, a little colorful, and out of the box. We wanted create a comfortable and warm setting. The trick was incorporating everything that represents us as a couple. It had to be a blend of my obsession with whimsical colors and Patrick’s slick rustic charm.

Other Cool Stuff We Should Know About

Our wedding was a whopping $5,000! We had the ceremony at a park close to our home (also the park we got engaged in), and the reception was at our home. It was very important for all of our vendors to be Black/Person of Color, Queer friendly, or a woman. We do not consider ourselves Christian, so we had a wonderful mixture of African and African-American traditions. Because we knew that some people would come to our wedding to be “nosey” but not actually be present to support our marriage, we had all of our guests recite a Community Vow and it was simply breathtaking!

Favorite Thing About The Wedding

Definitely the ceremony and our First Poem (Bakari can’t dance so we did a first poem instead of a first dance)!
