From the bride: When Adam and I first became engaged, we dreamed of a small intimate wedding. However, when our guest list surpassed the 300 person mark, we knew a small wedding was not possible.
As we started to plan, Adam and I were determined to keep this now large wedding as intimate as possible. The first challenge was finding a space large enough to accommodate our guests but that also reflected our love of old school New York. The first time we stepped into Cipriani Wall Street , we knew it was where our wedding was meant to be. The old, glamorous feel of the room set the tone for the rest of the wedding details.
To kick off the event, we sent vintage New York postcards to our guests for our save the dates. For the wedding, we decided to keep our flowers in all whites so as not to compete with the innate beauty of the space. We accented tables with gold linens and lots of candles to create a warm environment. As a tribute to Martha’s Vineyard, my home away from home since the age of 6, we placed small boxes of chocolates from Chilmark Chocolates at each place setting. Upon leaving, our guests were given a traditional New York black and white cookie from Glaser’s and a carton of milk inside a brown paper bag that read “Sweet Dreams.”
The ceremony was the most significant part of our wedding day. We kept our Chuppah simple and in season by using flowering branches and hanging candles. Our goal was to make the ceremony personal and filled with sentimental details. So, we asked the Cantor who performed my bat mitvah 17 years earlier to marry us. And although we had a wedding party, we asked that only our immediate family members stand at the Chuppah surrounding us. We hung my great grandmothers shawl from the Chuppah and used a family Kiddush cup for one of the blessings over the wine.
My bouquet was wrapped in a handkerchief that my mother used at her own wedding. Most importantly, because Adam’s father passed away when Adam was only 4, we used his father’s Bar Mitzvah tallis to enshroud us during our wedding blessing, which was the only time we both cried during the ceremony. Lastly, I walked down the aisle to the string version of our wedding song.
These small, thoughtful details allowed Adam and I to have the intimate wedding we dreamed of. As a guest commented, the large, cavernous room of Cipriani was overflowing with love, which is the best compliment any couple can receive as they start their life together.
