In Italy, Even the Seafood is Hotter Than You

In Italy, Even the Seafood is Hotter Than You

I never imagined that Emilia-Romagna, the land of delectable meats and cheeses, would have so much to offer in terms of seafood!

But Emilia-Romagna does, in fact, have a coast — and its most famous coastal destination is Rimini, Italy’s top destination for cheap holidays on the beach.  To have the best seafood, you head straight to the source — in this case, the Adriatic Sea. It was at Il Pescato restaurant in Rimini where we dined on a seafood feast at that we’ll remember for ages.

We began with an impressive platter of crudo, or raw seafood — Italy’s version of sashimi. The highlights were the silky maroon tuna that slid down your throat as smoothly as wine, and cold, silvery, raw shrimp (which I had eaten with garlic and chiles in Thailand, but were totally different here in Italy!).

That shrimp doesn’t know that he only has moments to live.

Our next course: risotto with basil and tartiglie, a local fish that was previously known as a peasant’s fish. All over the world, traditional “peasant dishes” are being turned into haute concoctions of the 21st century, and we saw no exception in Rimini.

And finally, the piece de resistance: an enormous gray mullet for the eight of us to share. This was the meatiest fish I had ever tasted, and one of the absolute best.  It looks small from this angle, but there were about two inches of flesh to dig into on the body!

Not enough for you?  How about some calamari! I hadn’t eaten grilled whole calamari since last winter, hanging out in the beach restaurants in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

And we kept the wine flowing, as always. Tonight was white, naturally.

For dessert, it was mascarpone cream. This was perfect for me, as I adore tiramisu but hate cakey versions.  To me, the ideal tiramisu is a soup, and that’s what this mascarpone cream was like.

As usual, after dessert, we finished with a caffe (espresso).  And then they just had to hand out grappa on the way out!

Not for the faint-hearted, as you can see.

If you come to Emilia-Romagna to experience the best food treasures in Italy, you may be tempted to stay in the hill towns and gorge yourself on cured meats and red wine — but try to plan a visit to the coast as well. Seafood this good is definitely worth the trip.

Hunting for Truffles with Dogs

Hunting for Truffles with Dogs

Hunting for truffles with dogs in the mountains of Italy was definitely something I never imagined myself doing. Yet when it was revealed as one of our Delicious Emilia-Romagna activities, I was ready to jump right in!

I pictured myself with a huge, hyperactive dog on the end of a leash, running all over the place with his nose to the ground as I jogged behind him, struggling to keep up.

Well, it wasn’t quite that way. Starting with the arrival of the head of tourism in the town of Sant’Agata Feltria.

He looked our group up and down, then planted his eyes on me.  “Your shoes are not good,” he told me.

…REALLY?!

I was wearing hiking boots, the same boots in which I climbed Mount Snowdon the week before. Sure, they weren’t very attractive, and God knows Italians live and die for fashion, but were they really a bad choice?

Just then, a pickup truck pulled up, our two hunters inside.  Before getting out of the car — before saying a word to anyone! — one of the hunters looked at my shoes and said, “Those shoes are not good.”

WHAT?! Worse than Christine’s trendy sneakers?  Worse than Katja’s high heels?!

I have the feeling that this is a prank that they play on every woman in ugly shoes who comes to hunt truffles in Sant’Agata Feltria.

We headed out into the hills, where we were stared at by a herd of unmoving cows.  It was like something out of a horror movie.

And the hunt began!

When you think of hunting for truffles, you probably think of pigs. Pigs do hunt truffles in Italy — but they also eat them up if you don’t get to them quickly enough!  At 2,000 EUR per kilo, you don’t want to risk it.  Luckily, the dogs use their sense of smell without eating the prized truffles themselves.

The very spirited dogs promptly ran off into the woods, trying to chase down that crazy truffle scent.

Each time the hunters go hunting for truffles, they go with two dogs: an older, seasoned truffle-hunting dog, and a younger dog learning how to hunt.  It’s a constant cycle of training.

Italians have been doing this for generations — one of our hunters was a fifth-generation truffle hunter! Back in his great-grandfather’s time, on a good day, they would find 20 kilos of truffles.  Of course, back then, nobody wanted to eat them.  Today, they’re lucky if they find one kilo.

For some more facts about truffles, including the reason why the dogs can hunt the same area every day and discover truffles that weren’t there the day before, check out the video:

I really have no idea how the hunters were able to determine that the dog had found a truffle! To me, it just looked like they ran around like maniacs, no method to their madness.

But the hunters know their dogs better than anyone else, and they could tell where the truffle was found.  Here he is digging for one:

I’d like to add that by this time, we were squelching through mud. My hiking boots had definitely been the right choice, as they now sported an inch-thick layer of mud around the edge.  Poor Katja lamented the fact that she had worn heels!

Hunting for Truffles with Dogs

We did find some truffles that day — the white truffle pictured above is worth 15-20 EUR and may end up in shavings on a dish at a five-star restaurant in New York or Paris.

Hunting for truffles with dogs was such an interesting experience, and if you end up in Emilia-Romagna, I highly recommend a trip to truffle-rich Sant’Agata Feltria to track down some of these beauties for yourselves.

Is This the Coolest Hotel in Italy?

While visiting Emilia-Romagna, we spent two nights in Rimini at the duoMo hotel .

I’ve stayed at a lot of interesting and wacky hotels in my life…but nothing tops the duoMo for the sheer coolness factor.

Is this not the coolest front desk you have ever seen?! I felt like a geek taking pictures of it…but seriously!

Step off the elevator and you’re greeted by these graffiti-style mirrored room numbers.

Each floor has an honesty bar filled with beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Take a drink, write your name down on the clipboard, and you’ll be charged at the end of your stay!

Is it charming or naive?  Apparently it works well for them.

Most impressive was the bathroom, complete with an incredibly deep bathtub and what I dubbed a “Jetsons toilet.”

I hate to admit this, but I kind of turned on the bathtub jets and couldn’t figure out how to turn them off — once the water level dropped, the jets sprayed all over the room, and I had to flee!  About 15 minutes later, they turned off on their own, thankfully.  (Later, I found out I wasn’t the only blogger in the group this happened to!)

My favorite touch: grapes and melted dark chocolate waiting on the chrome table, next to the Dior book!

The duoMo hotel is set in the city center of Rimini, close to boutiques and nightlife and away from the beach.  This section of Rimini is the place to be year-round, and as a result, has far fewer tourists.

After a day of hunting truffles with dogs in Sant’Agata Feltria, we returned to find our previously quiet hotel restaurant had morphed into the hottest destination on Sunday evenings — complete with a DJ!

Oh, yes.  We were there to see and be seen.

Here’s a video tour of the hotel, starting at the entrance (wait until you see the automatic doors!)

Granted, it’s not the ideal spot for a bargain holiday in Rimini, nor is it ideally situated if you plan on spending all your time on the beach. But if you really want to be impressed, the duoMo hotel is the place for you.
