“It’s like rai-ayy-ann on your wedding day…” Alanis Morissette famously sang. And it’s not ironic, it actually doesn’t matter one jot! This wedding proves that, for one, you’ll end up with some incredible pictures (today’s images are by the awesome June Cochran ). I’m talking happy guests dancing in the rain, colourful umbrellas adorning the ceremony, and a whole heap of merriness and creativity totally untroubled (hell, even enhanced!) by the showers.

Shoshana and Sam mixed Jewish tradition and boho chic together effortlessly, and handcrafted so many thoughtful details for their W Day. They are also testament to the fact that wedspiration can strike anywhere: their colour scheme was inspired by coffee packaging they came across at their local grocery store!

As will as bringing their own creative talents into play, they called upon family and friends to play a very central part, both in the lead-up to the wedding, and on the day itself. As Shoshana puts it (and I SO agree with her) “Ask for help… people really want to be a part of your celebration so don’t be afraid to assign tasks.”

And doesn’t Shoshana look beautiful? Her French lace Sarah Seven dress is divine and I love how she’s accessorised her look with fresh flowers in her hair – she looks sensational.

Tragically, Sam’s grandmother died a few days before the wedding but the couple  knew even before the event that she wasn’t in a position to travel. So they chose a beautiful white latticed blanket that belonged to her as their chuppah covering. Sam told me, ” I was extremely close with my grandmother, so it was very meaningful to have a tangible token from her with us. And that it was covering us during our ceremony was even more poignant.”

This detail is so very special and an illustration of exactly why I started Smashing The Glass – to inspire you with the most beautiful, creative and symbolic ways to personalise your Jewish (or Jew-ish) wedding from start to finish. Shoshana and Sam’s W Day has it in bucketfuls. Take it away you two!

how we met

Shoshana, the Bride: Sam and I met in graduate school at NYU while studying Food Systems. We actually had a mutual friend in common (that lived in Colorado) that told me to look for Sam in one of my classes. I spotted him, eventually introduced myself, became friends for about 6 months and then started dating. Much more to the story than that but that’s the simple story!

our wedding in a nutshell

When I chose the colours for the wedding I wasn’t sure how they were going to play out – in other words I didn’t have a vision for what items I wanted to be coral or blue. A personal passion and hobby of mine is creating shibori textiles – japanese indigo dip-dying techniques. So, I decided to do a huge DIY project and made 22 nine-foot table runners. Sam was a huge help and it was a bonding experience for us. I’ve even started selling them since then.

On another note, Sam’s 98 year old grandmother passed away four days before the event. In the Jewish tradition, a funeral can wait until after a joyous occasion, so the wedding went on as planned, and flew to Massachusetts right after for the funeral. It was incredibly sad and certainly changed the initial tone of things, but she was celebrated throughout the weekend. We even had to change out mini-moon from the mountain of Colorado to the beaches of Cape Cod. When families come together to support one another through joy and difficult, it all works out well in the end.

We got married at the River Bend in Lyons, Colorado. It’s a small mountain town along a beautiful river. We wanted a summer wedding near water and this was the best water venue we could find in a land-locked state. It was a perfect setting.

Besides envisioning an outdoor wedding, the two things we wanted were good food and good music. The rest came about organically. Our colours were inspired by a coffee package we came across at the grocery store. We used a wedding planner, Julie Lundy , for some of the coordination, but majority of it we did ourselves, along with our families.

invitation design

Our friend, Sarah from MPH Design who is a graphic designer offered to design the invitations as a wedding gift to us. She and I are both inspired by Indian textile prints, so she used that as the basis for the design.

A Sarah Seven dress

I had no idea what I wanted in a wedding dress before I started looking, so it took me awhile to narrow things down. Ultimately, the last place I visited ended up having “the one”. Sarah Seven , in San Francisco, which is where we lived at the time, is where I bought it, and the style was “Helene”. It was the only style I kept coming back to in my head so I just followed my intuition and it turned out beautiful.

accessories

I wore fresh flowers in my hair, a pair of rose gold “rose” studs given to me by my Aunt Esther, and a bracelet gifted to me by my Mother-in-Law, Joyce.  I wore my mother’s veil during the badeken ceremony, but I didn’t wear it down the aisle – too traditional for me. I also wore a belt on my dress which I bought from Sarah Seven .

coral wedges

I hardly ever wear heels so my wedding wasn’t going to be the exception. I found a coral pair of wedges from Sole Society that were perfect for the occasion. It poured rain at our wedding so the shoes were trashed by the end and I tossed them!

hair+ make up

I feel privileged to have worked with two of the best hair and make-up styles in the area – Beth Walker for make-up and Ashley Smith for hair. I don’t wear a lot of make-up so I knew I wanted a natural look with a pop of colour on my lips. And for hair I wanted a low, side bun look which Ashley nailed on the first try!

The handsome groom

Sam was really excited to work with a custom tailoring company for his suit. Even though they were based in Arkansas, Strong Suit did an amazing job of taking measurements over Skype and the suit was beautiful and he looked extra handsome!

the ceremony

We worked with Rabbi Tirzah Firestone for many months leading up to the wedding, and she was an integral part of the entire experience. Her depth of knowledge, spirituality and energy brought Sam and I together throughout the various ceremonies and rituals on our wedding day. We chose to sign a ketubah and have a small badeken in advance of the larger ceremony and it was all magical. During the big ceremony, we had a close childhood friend of mine read a poem by Pablo Neruda, as well as friends and family read the Seven Blessings. Our ketubah was from Tallulah Ketubahs .

chuppah design

I found some inspiration on Pinterest – both for the frame and the flowers. Our friend Tyler’s family owns a construction company and so he offered to help us build our chuppah from scratch. Sam and Tyler bought all of the materials, stained, sanded and cut the wood and Tyler put it together. We loved the chuppah so much that we donated it to the venue to use for future weddings.

Sam, the Groom: Like Shoshana said, my grandmother died a few days before the ceremony. We knew even before the event that she wasn’t in a position to travel, so my mother found a beautiful white latticed blanket that belonged to my grandmother that we wound up placing over the chuppah. I was extremely close with my grandmother, so it was very meaningful for me to have a tangible token from her with us. And that it was covering us during our ceremony was even more poignant.

flowers

Shoshana, the Bride: Our wedding venue is owned by the Lyons Farmette down the road, where we were able to source local produce and flowers for our wedding. Unfortunately, the night before the wedding a huge rainstorm came in and demolished the flowers, so our amazing florist, Helen, worked with local vendors in a pinch to select beautiful flowers for arrangements. I gave Helen some Pinterest images to work with, but she is so talented that she created stunning arrangements for everything. For the table centerpieces, my Mother-in-Law, Joyce, and I rented some eclectic pieces and Helen filled them with gorgeous flowers.

Our fabulous photographer

We interviewed several photographers and then we found June Cochran and just loved her style of photography. We hired a videographer only for the ceremony.

Catering, Wedding pies and a white wine cake

We worked closely with Chef Dale Lamb to create a menu that we loved (and we heard our guests loved, too!) Chef Lamb works one on one with his clients, and sources meat and produce locally which was important to us. He’s amazing to work with.

Food is incredibly important to both of us, personally and professionally, so we worked hard to make sure everything was top notch in this realm. We really wanted pie for dessert so we ordered a variety of delicious pies from the Long I Pie Shop . Our dear family friend, Diane of Culinary Hearts Catering , gifted us our cake. It was a white wine cake with lemon curd filling and goat cheese frosting – incredible!

entertainment

We had a jazz trio during dinner and a DJ ( DJ Jahsonic ) for the rest of the evening. Fun fact about our DJ is that he’s the host of a world-renowned reggae radio show based here in Boulder, Colorado, so we were thrilled to let him infuse the evening with some of his tunes, along with a variety of music we asked him to play. We didn’t do photo booths or anything like that. The venue was so beautiful and the food delicious that it provided enough entertainment.

spice favours

We aren’t into gimmicky things, so we wanted a favour to be simple if we were going to do it at all. Sam hand blended a spice mix and we gave out tins of that to each guest.

advice to brides and grooms currently planning their wedding

Just remember, DIY literally means you have to Do It Yourself! Keep that in mind along the way so you don’t save everything for the last minute. Ask for help, people really want to be apart of your celebration so don’t be afraid to assign tasks. That said, DIY makes it that much more special and we wouldn’t change a thing.

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Be still, my beating heart. Philippa’s Suzanne Neville dress is simply DIVINE. As are her metallic Jimmy Choo’s for that matter… But are you surprised when she’s the Fashion Editor of one of the UK’s hottest national women’s magazines?! Yes folks, we are in for a HUGE treat today with Philippa & Alex’s super chic Jewish wedding at the elegant New London Synagogue followed by their reception at one of my favourite luxury London venues – the one and only Claridges.

And their big day is every bit as glamorous and romantic as you’d expect. An emotionally-charged badeken having not seeing each other for one week prior (wait till you see the moment in the wedding film – it’s goosebumps all around), a gigantic floral chuppah surrounded by pillar candles, the coolest bridesmaids in gold sequinned gowns, exquisite stationery with calligraphy by one of my wedding supplier crushes, Lamplighter London , and crazy jewish wedding dancing thanks to entertainment from the legendary Gilev Show Band .

It’s a truly stylish, luxe wedding and not only do we have the dreamy images from Polly Alexandre , but we also have the film from Gorgeous Films who actually filmed my own London wedding back in 2013 as well!

A Jewish wedding at the New West End Synagogue and Claridges

Philippa, the bride: Our ceremony was at the New West End Synagogue – we loved how ornate and traditional this synagogue is compared to others in central London. It’s got a beautiful intimate feel and has a strong spiritual vibe which we loved too.

We had our reception and party at Claridges . From an early age, Claridges has always been my all-time favourite hotel in London. I was really conscious of not having a very large Jewish wedding and because of Claridge’s ballroom size it meant that we could control this. We also love its art deco super sophisticated style. Although in general it’s quite a large hotel, it feels really homely and the staff are incredible – there wasn’t anything they couldn’t do!

Classic style

It was actually a really big deal to me not to have a “theme” for our wedding. So many weddings go down a very “fancy dress” look and so I just wanted to keep everything classic and simple with a few special twists. My cousin is (very conveniently) a party planner and so he helped me with the production of the day but I was really adamant I didn’t want any fancy party tricks!

Our invitation design

I was sent an invitation at work for Quintessentially Weddings and absolutely fell in love with the design. I took it along to our stationary designers and we managed to create something very similar. We chose a very pale grey textured card with rose gold foil embossed font (I loved how the rose gold tied in with the art deco vibe at Claridges). I’m obsessed with modern calligraphy and commissioned Lamplighter London to write each of our guest’s names on the invitation. It was really nice to put our personal stamp on our invitations.

Hair+Make-up

I really just wanted to look like myself on my wedding day. I had thought of the idea of wearing my hair up but decided on the biggest day of my life why would I do something I’ve never done before?! I was so pleased with how my hair and makeup looked and neither budged the whole day!

A Suzanne Neville dress

As a stylist, you would think choosing a wedding dress would be an easy task. But this wasn’t the case! My day to day style is very simple and pared back but I felt really under pressure to be in a big OTT gown, which is just so not me.

I tried on SO many dresses to the point where I had to have a break from it as was getting really worried I would never find “the one”. There were plenty of dresses that I tried and liked, but at that point nothing that I loved. After not thinking about it for a few months I decided to pop to Suzanne Neville on Beauchamp Place as it’s down the road from my office. I spoke to the sales assistant for a while on the kind of style/idea I was looking for and decided to leave it to her to select dresses for me to try.

It turns out, I went in at the perfect time as her new collection had literally just been launched that week and no one had seen it yet. The first dress I tried on, I knew instantly it was “the one”. The lady had not even tied it up at the back but I knew I loved it. My dress was super simple but with a really beautiful cut – exactly what I wanted. I wanted to look like a bride, but not bridal!

Accessories

My best friend Sarah and blog partner ( www.wearetwinset.com ) lent me her veil which was so special and I love what it resembled. The veil had tiny Swarovski crystals all the way down the front which looked really subtle and complimented my simple dress perfectly. Although I’m so not a “blingy” kind of girl, I decided I wanted to add a little sparkle to my dress for the party. I added a very thin diamante belt to my dress after the ceremony and loved how it transformed my dress for the evening.

Jimmy Choo heels

For all the brides to be out there, if the budget can stretch, you have to invest in Jimmy Choo ’s for your wedding day! I went for strappy gold/silver metallic heels and they were so comfortable! Again, because my dress was so simple I felt I could justify sparkly shoes!

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
The handsome groom

Alex wore a bespoke tux from Hackett London which was exactly the “look” he wanted. Again, he was really conscious not to look “fancy dress” with all the tux and tails and so kept it simple but special with his suit. At the same time, he asked his ushers to all wear black tie tux’s – nothing too fancy, just simple and smart.

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Bridesmaids

My maid of honour and bridesmaid both wore dusty gold sequin gowns from Ariella . I loved how the metallic looked against my ivory dress.

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Chuppah design

Because the New West End synagogue is so beautiful it really didn’t need too much “dressing”. I’m obsessed with candles so we had church candles in lanterns leading up the stairs to the front door. Because our ceremony and reception were in different venues I wanted to keep to the same tone/style and the best way to do this was through the flowers. I didn’t want our chuppah to look “manicured” and so asked our florist to use flowers that would give a fluid and natural look. Spring weddings are the best for flower choices too!

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
The Ceremony

To be totally honest, the whole day was so incredible and I wouldn’t change anything about it but to pick out a highlight it would have to be the Badeken room. I moved home with my Mum the week before our wedding (highly recommend this!) and so it was so emotional (for us all) in the intimate badeken room. Looking back at photos and our video we can both see how emotional we were when we saw each other for the first time. It was a really special moment for our parents and grandparents too.

Natural looking flowers

I often receive Scarlet & Violet flowers through work and so always knew I would love her flowers for my wedding day. Vic at Scarlet & Violet has such an effortless but stunning style and I pretty much left it to her when it came to choosing our designs. Although I wanted fairly “wild” natural looking flowers we had to make sure the bouquets and table centres still looked glamorous to reflect Claridges style.

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Our fabulous photographer and videographer

Because of my job, choosing a photographer was a really important decision for me. I really didn’t want cheesy staged photos and so spent a long time researching to find the perfect photographer for our big day. I actually found Polly Alexandre through Pinterest – she had already shot a wedding at Claridges the summer before our wedding and I absolutely love her natural style.

The same idea went with choosing our videographer – it was really important to find a videographer that would work well with our photographer and have the same natural/non-cheesy style! I couldn’t recommend Gorgeous Film enough and they were an absolute pleasure to work with from beginning to end!

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Not a cake

(Controversially) we didn’t have a cake! They are really expensive and we decided against the whole “knife in hand cutting cake” photo!

A Suzanne Neville Bride for an über chic elegant Jewish wedding at New London Synagogue and Claridges, London, UK
Entertainment

I think it’s really important to cater to all ages with music at weddings. Although we wanted to play music that we knew we and all our friends would want to dance to, it was important for us to play current but appropriate music, especially at the beginning. We chose Real Love by Jess Glynne and our band ( The Gilev Show Band ) sang it in an amazing acoustic version, it was so perfect!

Advice to brides and grooms currently planning their wedding

Having a two year engagement was the best decision for us. It meant that we could really take in what was happening and not rush an details. Undoubtable, planning a wedding is so stressful but on the day, no matter what, it is going to be the BEST day of your life. I drove myself mad about tiny details and on the actual day none of it mattered! Everyone told us to try take 5 minutes to ourselves on the night just to take it all in and I couldn’t recommend this enough – it flashes by in a second!

A Rosa Clara bride for a festive Winter Wonderland Jewish-Humanist wedding at The Underglobe, Globe Theatre, London, UK

A Rosa Clara bride for a festive Winter Wonderland Jewish-Humanist wedding at The Underglobe, Globe Theatre, London, UK
Today’s Jew-ish wedding takes the term ‘White Wedding’ to a whole new level! Phoebe & Ben were married in December 2015 and love winter, the festive season, and the way it brings the whole family together, so wanted their wedding to capture that sparkly, wintery, celebratory feeling.

They picked their stunning venue, The Underglobe (the museum beneath Shakespeare’s world-famous Globe Theatre in London) because of their love of theatre, and Wildabout Flowers expertly decorated the space to look like a dramatic Winter Wonderland straight out of Narnia.

Some of my favourite details include Phoebe’s sublime Rosa Clara gown, a colour scheme that included silver, purple and all out sparkles, live cabaret by a Drag Queen in leather shorts and knee high boots, and a first dance to I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore (genius!). Then there’s the off-the-scale Abigail Bloom cake, a show-stopping speech by the bride, an unplanned (unrehearsed) rendition of Bohemian Rapsody by the couple’s friends, a hugely meaningful Humanist-Jewish wedding ceremony, movie-themed icebreakers on the tables… Phew, what a wonderful glorious mix!

Come on in and delve into Jew-ish Wedding Narnia… We have the perfectly captured images by Richard Payne and the oh-so-romantic film by Allora Visuals . Take it away gorgeous Phoebe!

How we met

Phoebe, the bride: Ben and I meet at University, he was on the Kent Falcons American football team, and I was a first year who had just joined the Kent Falconette cheerleading team. We be came friendly on the team tour to Prague, and eventually Ben asked me out.

Choosing to get married at The Underglobe, South Bank, London

We got married at The Underglobe . It’s an amazing museum space under the Globe Theatre on the South Bank in London. I love the theatre and performing and the space was so versatile, when we first walked in their where children being given a sword fighting demonstration, but that was what I loved I knew we could completely transform it.

A Rosa Clara bride for a festive Winter Wonderland Jewish-Humanist wedding at The Underglobe, Globe Theatre, London, UK
Winter Wonderland and a Movie theme

I love winter, and the festive season, it’s a reasons to bring the whole family together, and I wanted our wedding to have that same feeling, of the family coming home for the holidays. Our ‘main’ theme was winter wonderland, our colours where white and silver, with a splash of purple (we both have the same favourite colour, and it was the colour of our uniforms when we played sport at uni) we have a second theme to help tie things together, movies.

We picked our favourite films for the table names and used movie soundtracks for some of the key songs throughout the evening – we even had movie themed Icebreakers on the tables and movie themed props for the photo booth. It’s was subtle but helped to bring out our personalities.

We found the venue and the majority of the suppliers on our own, but a few months before the wedding, I ended up changing jobs and we where moving house, and it all become a little too much, so I enlisted the help of the fantastic Zouch & Lamare. Liesl and Mimi were brilliant and had some fantastic ideas, were so passionate, and like me, really paid attention to the details of the day.

Invitation design

I wanted our invitations to be an extension of the day, as they are the first thing people see. We worked with Intricate Creations – I couldn’t and see them in person but we spent hours on the phone exchanging ideas and thoughts and the end results where perfect. They also made our table name signs from mirrored Perspex, they looked amazing.

Hair + Make-up

The lovely Kristina Gaspera did my make up, I wanted to look like me only a little more sparkly. I went for a make up lesson with Kristina before choosing to book her for my wedding as I wanted to check we would be on the same page, and she was just fantastic. I learnt so much from her in the lesson. And on the day she did everyone’s make up exactly as I had envisioned, but better!

Imran Chowdhary of Michael John in Knightsbridge did our hair, I thought I had always known how I wanted my hair, but when we tried it, it looked too old fashioned. Imran played around a little during the trial, and on the day, with the diamond head band and veil, it all fell into place.

A Rosa Clara bride for a festive Winter Wonderland Jewish-Humanist wedding at The Underglobe, Globe Theatre, London, UK
A Rosa Clara dress from Paris

I really wanted something timeless, Audrey Hepburn has always been a style icon of mine, I didn’t wanted something too of-the-moment as I’ve never been one to followed trends. I was really struggling to find something that ticked all the boxes, I didn’t want lace, or beading, I didn’t want ruffles or something too patterned…

One afternoon flipping through one of the 100 bridal magazines I had bought, I saw a interview for Rosa Clara , and feel in love with the shapes of her dresses, and the texture of the fabrics… Only problem… nowhere in London seemed to sell them. My nearest store according to their locator was in Paris. As I was going to be in the city of romance for work only a few weeks later, I booked an appointment. My mother came out to join me, and after trying on only three dresses, I walked out the changing room, and my mother started crying. That was it, we paid the deposit, and booked in my first fitting for 12 months later, and headed into Paris for a celebratory glass of champagne.

A very special gift from my father

I picked a stunning little jacket to go with the dress, as the wedding was in December, I needed something to keep me warm. It really helped give the overall look that slight vintage feel I wanted, and it totally helped make my waist look tiny.

My veil was also from Rosa Clara , it was very simple but very long. My jewellery was all from David Morris , as my father owns the company and I had worked there for five years. I knew exactly wanted I wanted to wear, the only problem was the week before the wedding the earrings I had wanted to borrow had been sold! However the staff were all wonderful and I tried on every pair of earrings in the shop until I found something that would work with the diamond Alice band I had picked out.

After the wedding, when I went to return the earrings to my father, he whispered in my ear ‘they are my present to you’ it was such an incredible gift and I felt so lucky.

Sparkly Stuart Weitzman shoes

I’ve never been a great wearer of high heels, and while I LOVE shoes, I can normally only keep them on my feet for about an hour before I give up, so it took a while to find a pair that I liked and could walk in.

In the end I picked a sparkly pair of Stuart Weitzman for Russell & Bromley ‘s ‘showbiz’ heels. The name felt fitting for the venue, and they where so comfy. I kept them on all evening until it came time to do the first dance and I realised the dance floor was quite slippery. Not wanting to end up on my bottom in front of 180 people, I slipped into my crystal covered trainers my mother had surprised me with a few days earlier ‘just in case’.

The handsome groom

Our wedding was black tie, and we had Ben’s tux custom made by a local tailor, Birkett Bespoke Tailors , who talked us through all the fabrics and linings etc, We liked him so much that we ordered a second suit for Ben to wear to some of the other wedding events. We got all the ushers and best men matching scrabble cuff links and purple silk bow ties – they all looked so smart.

A Rosa Clara bride for a festive Winter Wonderland Jewish-Humanist wedding at The Underglobe, Globe Theatre, London, UK
Bridesmaids in silver

I had always known that I would have my sister Cecily as my chief bridesmaid, and my little sister Skye as my flower girl, and of course my best friend Heather was definitely going to be a bridesmaid too.

They all wore different dresses, in tones of silver in keeping with the colours of the wedding and they all looked amazing.

The flower girls dress was from Monsoon , Heather’s was from a lovely store on Chiswick High Street – Reflections Bridalwear and is by Dessy . My sister’s dress was made bespoke for her.

Not a chuppah but a wall of foliage and white flowers

We didn’t have a chuppah, we were married in front of a wall of foliage and white flowers, but to play with tradition, our amazing florist had created a tunnel of white willow tress, so as we walked up the aisle it was as if we where walking through the archway of hoops that the bride and groom enter through at the start of the reception, which is quite a traditional thing to do at a Jewish wedding.

A Humanist Ceremony

We had a humanist ceremony. Ben’s family is Christian and mine is Jewish, and we wanted something far more personal than a civil ceremony. We meet with Ginny and explained our predicament, of wanted a ceremony about us that allowed us to bring in elements from both of religions. She agreed, and we worked with her to put together a ceremony, that even six months on family and friends still comment on just how personal and lovely it was.

My brother lit a candle for the family that are no longer with us, and my mother read a poem, and Ben’s father a passage from Corinthians.
The highlight of the ceremony was hearing all our friends and family laugh. It’s one of the things I love most about Ben is the fact even in what feels like the darkest of times he can always make me laugh and that was so important to us.

Our musical choices

I walked down the aisle to an amazing orchestral rendition of What a Wonderful World performed by Orquesta Filarmónica de Honduras, I spent a very long time searching for the perfect version of the song. But as a surprise for all our guests, and to kick off our movie theme, our recessional music was The Jurassic Park theme tune .. some of our male guests where very impressed. And to keep the movie theme going, we entered the reception to the Star Wars theme , it was a surprise for Ben, and it was much appreciated.

Incredible Flowers

We worked with the amazing Wildabout Flowers . Leanne is a family friend, she did the flowers for our engagement party, there was never going to be anyone else!

I gave her my overall vision, winter wonderland; whites, silvers and greys. And I trusted her to do what she does best. It was so amazing to walk into the venue to have this amazing surprise. They totally transformed the space, you never would have know by day it’s a museum. Using willow trees, decorated with floating tea lights, and surrounding the bases of the trees with festive foliage and white roses, it was like a snow covered garden.

She picked calla lilies for the bridesmaids bouquets as she knew they where one of my favourite flowers (she remembered from the engagement party) and the only thing I had said I really wanted was white peonies for my bouquet. Very out of season, she said she would try. Well try she did and deliver she did, they smelt amazing, and looked amazing.

Our fabulous photographer…

I studied photography at school, so the photographs where really key to the evening. I had looked at over nearly 100 wedding photographers and no one had really stood out, till I meet Richard Payne at Brides The Show . He used black and white FILM!!! As well as digital, but it was the film that got me excited. He had an amazing eye, but also understood that there is something so amazingly tangible about an original printed photograph, that digital just can’t capture. I was sold, and he did not disappoint, I only wish I could share the black and white prints with you.

…and Videographer

We picked Allora Visuals to do our videography, I knew the day would fly by so fast I would miss so much of it. Niki capture all the key moments, from getting ready at the hotel, all the wonderful speeches, and even the unplanned (unrehearsed) rendition of Bohemian Rapsody our friends treated us to at the end of the night when the music stopped, and no one wanted to leave.

Jewish Traditions

It was really important to me to have some elements of Jewish tradition , so I asked my uncle to do the blessing over the bread and wine before the meal. Those prayers where always my responsibility as a child, and remember being so proud when I learnt them by heart, it was a really special moment for me to have them said at my wedding by my uncle.

A wow wedding cake

We worked with Abigail Bloom for our cake, I had heard so much about her from some of our suppliers, and when we tried the cake I could understand why, not only did it look amazing, but it tasted even better. We saved the top tire to have at our civil ceremony.

Entertainment

I let Ben to pick our first dance song. The only criteria was it had to be from a movie. He chose I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore which made me laugh every time I heard it as the version he chose was from Rock of Ages sung by Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin.

Our amazing drag queen sung it, in leather shorts and knee high boots, and I don’t think anyone one else got the joke, but it made the whole moment about us, which I loved.

We had an amazing live cabaret act, diva, tenor and drag. It was one of the few things Ben had really wanted – a drag queen! Over the years we have seen some amazing performance, and this was no different. They kicked the entertainment off with Time Of My Life from Dirty Dancing and the drag queen entered singing Diamonds Are Forever – very fitting for a family of jewellers. We then had a great DJ drummer take us through the rest of the evening, with the dance floor never empty.

Tree decorations as favours

I know that often favours got left behind, so I wanted them to be something everyone would want (and if not that I would want!) so we picked tree decorations, to match our colour scheme, and used them as the place settings as well. Most of them went, I saw some guest collecting more at the end of the evening, I even had a guest call me afterwards asking if I had any spare she loved them so much.

Creative details

To enter the drinks reception upstairs our guest had to pass through a wardrobe of coats, as if they where entering Narnia, it was just one of the many fantastic little touches that Zouch & Lamare pulled together for us.

We had a great photo booth, with loads of props, peopled loved it, and it was amazing to look back on them, and see how much fun everyone was having.

Speeches

My father gave a speech, I had been worried about what he might say, but he moved the whole room to tears. It was lovely to have his blessing and hear how proud of me he was, even Ben looked a little teary eyed, which doesn’t happen often.

Ben and his groomsmen all gave cracking speeches, and not be outdone I did one of my own . It was important to me that I had a chance to thank all the people that had done so much for us to make this day special.

…including a Bride’s speech!

There was no way I wasn’t going to make a speech at the wedding, after all the hard work, blood (literally, I pricked my fingers that morning sewing the straps onto my sisters flower girl dress), sweat and tears that went into the day, and there were people I wanted to thank.

It’s funny, a lady at my old office told me that a bride shouldn’t make a speech at the wedding because she should appear shy and demure on her big day…. well, anyone that knows me will tell you I am neither shy nor demure. It was so important to me that my friends who had supported me, and my family especially mother and father, my sister and my in laws knew how grateful I was for everything they had done to help make the day possible. Also to let Ben know how very much he means to me, and how much i appreciate his small gestures of love as much as the big ones, I told a funny story of me bashing my head against a wall and Ben coming to my aid with a bag of frozen brussels sprouts.

Advice to brides and grooms currently planning their wedding

Get help! It was very important to me that my friends and family where able to enjoy themselves and not worry about the decorations, or travel. Bring on planners for the last couple of months as it made everything so much easier and we didn’t notice any of the hiccups on the day.
