Bridal Market Bits | Sarantina by Sarah Jassir

Bridal market may have come and gone, but Sarantina’s stunning silhouettes will soon hit shops {this January, to be exact} and ladies, are you in for a treat. We often suggest the Sarantina collection to the New York bride who wants to add a bit of drama to her big day. The line is always inventive, with wonderfully feminine accents like big bows, silk organza rosettes and empire waistlines with voluminous skirts…
Bridal Market Bits | Sarantina by Sarah Jassir Bridal Market Bits | Sarantina by Sarah Jassir I had the pleasure of viewing the Sarantina runway presentation at Market… The mood, the music, the gowns {the ruffles, the ice blue accents}… it’s all so utterly delectable. I suppose I can’t sit here swooning unless I let you in on a little action.

Take your front row seat to “The Softer Side of New York” runway show above and let me know what you think…
I have to say, I’m pretty gaga over the first dress on top, {I love the pairing of an asymmetrical neckline and textured skirt}! And if you saw my style trend picks on Fashionable Bride this week, then you already know how much j’adore jeweled-tone wedding shoes!

Real New York Wedding | Ashley + Riggs at the New York Athletic Club

Real New York Wedding | Ashley + Riggs at the New York Athletic Club There are few things we love more than a stylish, classic, and tres-New York wedding like Ashley and Riggs’… From the legendary Manhattan locale {the traditional yet ever-tony NYAC }, to the graceful decor and elegant fashion, Ashley and Riggs’ wedding mixes a perfect cocktail of old New York charm with a new Manhattan love story. Their beautiful images were captured through the lens of Kirk Mastin of Mastin Studio , and we’re thrilled to share them with you…

Every now and then I shoot a wedding where the mood is so festive and lively that it makes me want to get married all over again. Ashley and Riggs’ New York City wedding at the New York Athletic Club was one of those affairs. It was truly an event where every single person appeared to be having the time of their lives.
The couple chose a white flower themed wedding. The bouquet, ring pillow, boutonnieres and table decorations were delicate and beautiful, and the settings were gorgeous.
Ashley and Riggs chose to get married at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament . The church is full of striking details. The lighting inside is moody and soft, making it a joy to shoot photos there.
Alternatively, the balcony on the ninth floor of the New York Athletic Club has great views of Central Park and was a favorite place for wedding guests to mingle during cocktail hour.
Ashley and Riggs are obviously in love and their relationship is clearly blessed by a tremendous community of family and dear friends. It was a pleasure to shoot them, to meet their loved ones, and to take part in such sophisticated and tasteful wedding

Real New York Wedding | Lizz + Pat at the Galapagos Art Space

Though tourists often insist New York to be cold and austere, real New Yorkers know the magic in finding secret, special spaces that seem meant just for them. For Lizz and Pat, that space is Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Manhattan skyline and river views proved to be the perfect background for their countless summer afternoons together… so when they began to plan their wedding, the park became the basis of their “Urban Picnic” theme.
During the reception at the Galapagos Art Space , the couple managed to reproduce a cheerful and outdoor atmosphere through whimsical details, bright colors and delicious BBQ food. It’s a pleasure to share these beautiful images from Heather from Oak Street Studio . Take a peek and get inspired!

From the Bride:

Our first thought when we began to plan our wedding, was to make it fun and not feel like work. Pat and I knew we wanted a special location and great food, and that we needed to make it happen on a tight budget. The Galapagos Art Space was perfect, and when we realized we could do the ceremony in Brooklyn Bridge Park we were totally sold.
Our theme “Urban Picnic” emerged from there and we sought to bring in simple but bold details to tie into the theme. The potted plants brought a lot of color and the pinwheels added a touch of whimsy. We repurposed an old chalkboard for the menu, and found some fun decor items very inexpensively at a local art supply store. Bringing the outdoors in with lighting was also important since it was a daytime wedding and the venue could otherwise feel a bit cavernous. We were really happy with how everything turned out!

Tuesday Shoesday | Studded Christian Louboutins

Tuesday Shoesday | Studded Christian Louboutins It’s Tuesday Shoesday, and we’re psyched to get in on the action with many of our fellow bloggers. I thought we’d start with one of our favorite photos from a local New York City wedding photographer, Brett Mathews Photography . Sheri captured the rockstar-esque mise en scene of these killer Christian Louboutins when shooting a wedding at the Tribeca Rooftop . Now we have to say, we’re not normally fans of anything bedazzled, bejeweled, or be-Snookified {a.k.a. Jimmy Choo for UGG – WTF?}, but these shoes are just beyond chic. They’re perfectly classy-lassie to pair with your Oscar de la Renta dress, and truly make for the prettiest of wedding shoe pics… unlike Mr. Choo’s latest, which for $795, seem best worn with spandex and a bump-it {just sayin’}.

What are your thoughts on embellished shoes for your wedding day?

Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James

Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James Last week, we tweeted that we were about to post a killer New York City engagement session packed with gorgeous photography, city-centric settings, and great pops of color. In other words: a shoot filled with perfect inspiration for all our NYC brides to be {or quite frankly, anyone looking for a fab photographer}.
So we thought we’d start your week out with just that. Here’s Nora and James’ great engagement session, as told by their photographers, Katherine and Craig at Henry + Masci Photography … {BTW- We collaged as many as we could fit, but be sure to pop by the Henry + Masci blog for ALL the photos}.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James About The Couple: Nora and James have been living in New York for years and were so excited to have their engagement photos taken there. The wedding is going to be in Maine so they wanted photos with a very different vibe. We really wanted to capture their lives in NYC, so we went to areas near where they lived and worked, capturing moments they live each day, like running across a busy street!
Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James We arrived in NY for the shoot on one of the hottest days of the summer. As you know, the best way for us to get around was walking to most spots. We kept stopping for water breaks between locations. Nora and James were such great sports and never complained. You would not know from looking at the photos that it was sweltering!
Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James Nora and James were so excited to be our tour guides and show us their city… They were so sweet and would point out unique buildings or new public art displays as we passed them. You could tell they felt at home in the city, especially when they started twirling and dancing on the cobblestone streets of Brooklyn.
Real NYC Engagement Session | Nora + James To finish the session we went to the ever-popular Mexican restaurant, La Esquina . From the outside it appears to be a standard taco diner. But as most of you know, the real gem is inside and downstairs. Nora and James are the sweetest couple and so in love. We had so much fun with them and are really looking forward to their wedding in 2011!

About Henry + Masci Photography:
We {Katherine and Craig} just tied the knot ourselves on Oct. 1, 2010! We are newlyweds and loving every minute. Having recently done the planning of our own wedding, we really relate to our couples. We love getting to know each of our couples and learning about their love stories. We are based just north of Boston, MA and love to travel and see new places. Besides wedding photography we enjoy shooting lifestyle sessions, families and boudoir!

“Bling” in the Holidays Giveaway with Monet Jewelry It’s giveaway time again on Merci New York… and this time we’re bringing… okay “blinging” {cute, right?}… in the holidays with some fabulous jewelry from our friends at Monet .
As stylists, we often turn to Monet for their great assortment of deco-inspired jewelry and gorgeous classic pieces – all at affordable prices. The company has been making beautiful baubles since 1929, so chances are you’re already familiar with their designs. But here are a few things you might not know:

  • Monet just launched a fabulous bridal collection … We viewed the new line during bridal market, and it rocks. {Plus, they’re adding hair pins and belts soon}. Check it out here .
  • They also have a great grouping of silver pieces that double as perfect bridesmaid gifts.
  • Monet has killer {and we mean killer} emerald button clip-ons . I know this may sound a bit random, but they are beyond chic for all your retro-styled looks. Truly, j’adore.

To show just how great the Monet line is, the ladies invited us to their showroom and asked us to pick two pieces that best resonate with our readers… We immediately gravitated toward the Begonia Beaded Chandelier Earrings and Diva Long Necklace from their holiday collection {and thought you would too}.
“Bling” in the Holidays Giveaway with Monet Jewelry Here’s how to win the pieces: Readers must visit the Monet website and comment with their favorite Monet jewelry pieces for the holidays! Easy-peasy.

Astrid Mueller Custom Fashion Illustrations

Astrid Mueller Custom Fashion Illustrations We love the idea of using pretty custom illustrations to add a bit of whimsy to any wedding-related celebration… Be it for showers, rehearsal dinners, or a casual wedding, your custom-designed likeness can add a jovial twist and the perfect amount of pop to the party…
That said, if there’s ever an artist to sketch your wedding-day self, it’s apt to be Astrid Mueller Exclusive … so we were thrilled when this exclusive product shoot made its way to the Merci New York inbox.
Astrid worked hand-in-hand with Rahel and Manuel to create an illustration that was used throughout the wedding in lieu of monograms and other branding elements. The result was a cute and cohesive design that folded nicely into their wedding day decor.
After they tied the knot, Astrid gifted the couple with a framed artisan print of the illustration to enjoy as a keepsake for years to come.
What do you think? What sort of custom designs and accents are you using for your wedding?

Style File: Bergorf Goodman’s Holiday Gifts for Your Groom

One for you…. okay, one for me too. Two for you, oh well, hey, why not… two for me. And this for me. And this for you, no me.
And so the holiday shopping season begins.

Style File: Bergorf Goodman’s Holiday Gifts for Your Groom With amazing holiday catalogs squeezing their way into the city-dweller’s mailbox so early in the season, it’s hard not to be just a {teeny} bit selfish. Case in point? The oh-my-god-its-absolutely-amazing Bergdorf Goodman holiday catalog. I received a press copy a few weeks ago and couldn’t edit all the goodness down to one streamlined {or bridal-specific} story, so I opted for a big “oh, the hell with it,” and decided to do a little mini-series of Merci’s favorite items. Just to show that we’re not too selfish, we’ll start with the guys….
From killer cuff links to sultry scents, bold bathing suits to barware worthy of a Mad Men mixer, the buyers at The Men’s Store at Bergdorf Goodman have got your man covered this holiday season.
Our stylists’ tip? Don’t just think about X-Mas. The holidays are a great time to knock out your groom’s gift, too. Chances are the pickings won’t be so fruitful {or creative} come June, so the holidays are the best time to buy and stash for your hubby-to-be!

1. Black woven silk ties with silver thread by Charvet ; 2. Sterling silver and hand painted enamel “Winking Owl” cuff links by Jan Leslie ; 3. Colonia Essenza for men Eau de Cologne spray by Aqua di Parma ; 4. {our favorite} 18-karat gold cuff links with ruby eyes by Deakin and Francis ; 5. Multicolor nylon “VIP” swimsuit with embroidery by Vilebrequin ; 6. Crystal decanters and silverplated funnel by William Yeoward ; 7. Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation

Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Funny how things happen sometimes. When we first peeked at Cara and Michael’s photos on the Ciro Photography website, we were completely smitten with their wedding day. Of course, Cara looked absolutely beautiful. But there was something so glamorous {yet soft}, and modern {yet vintage} about her style. We immediately sent a note to her photographer, Rich, to learn more… and {voila!} found out that the bride in question was Cara Sullivan, deputy editor at Martha Stewart Weddings .
Knowing that Cara not only planned a tres-beautiful wedding, but was also a seasoned beauty professional, we asked her to share some wedding day beauty tips alongside the gorgeous photos of her big day. We’re beyond thrilled to share Cara and Michael’s autumn wedding at the Angel Orensanz foundation with you.
Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation How would you describe your wedding style?
Modern and romantic, but not in the traditional sense. We wanted it to feel like a dark, cozy fall night in New York City. It poured on the morning of the wedding, but I was actually really psyched about it. The gray skies made the reception feel warm and inviting—it literally glowed. If we had wanted it to be bright and sunny, we wouldn’t have chosen to get married in a Gothic cathedral in November!
Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Do you have any advice for brides on pulling together their wedding day look with hair and makeup?
Be sure to have at least one consultation. It may add to your overall budget, but it’s so worth it. You spend so much time and money perfecting what you’re going to wear, but the hair and makeup are really what tie it all together.

Did you do your own wedding makeup?
Yes! I wanted it to look clean, classic, and just a little bit retro. My inspiration was Angelina Jolie’s makeup at the 2007 Golden Globes : a glossy nude lip, black liner, major lashes, and glowing skin.
Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Do you have any advice brides wanting to do their own makeup on their wedding day?
Practice, practice, practice. It’s not Friday night out with the girls, it’s your wedding day. Tear out pictures of makeup looks you like, map out a plan, and spend time mastering the techniques you’re not so skilled at, whether it’s winged-out liquid liner, a red-lip that doesn’t budge, or dewy skin that doesn’t look cakey. And play around with products you may not normally wear, like individual false lashes and primer. In photos, they make a world of difference.
Have a friend take pictures of the finished look with and without flash, and in and out of daylight so you can see how it’ll all come together on film.
Another must? Test out all the products you plan on using well before the big day rolls around. I once heard of a bride who was late to her own wedding because she’d had an allergic reaction to eyeliner she’d bought that morning.
Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation What is your best advice for brides looking for a makeup artist?
Ask for recommendations from your wedding planner, hair stylist, or friends who’ve recently tied the knot. Once you’ve gathered a few names, browse through their websites and ask to see photos of their recent work. If you’re not into their style, don’t bother scheduling a consultation—there are tons of other makeup artists in the sea. At the consultation, communicate your likes and dislikes as clearly as possible, bring lots of photos {you at your best, red carpet looks you love, etc}.
Rather than showing up freshly scrubbed, wear your typical “going out” face. It’s a great way to give your makeup artist an idea of your style. And if you don’t like something, speak up! That’s what consultations are for. Requesting a different lipstick doesn’t make you a diva.
Real New York Wedding | Cara + Michael at the Angel Orensanz Foundation What was your wedding splurge? Why was it important to you?
The venue. The first time we saw it, it literally took our breaths away. It was way out of our price range, but we cut back in other places to make it work. I’m so glad we did. Two years later, our guests are still talking about how special it was.

What was your vision for the ceremony?
The venue was super ornate, so I wanted the palette to be neutral. I went with antique gold bridesmaids dresses (to play off the gilded walls) and simple bouquets of ivory hydrangeas. I asked my florist to hang antique moss from the chandeliers, and the altar was backlit in pale gold. The only other light came from candles, and I remember it being really dark as I walked down the aisle. The drama queen in me really loved that part.

Wedding dress: Junko Yoshioka

Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey

Whenever we are styling brides, we often turn to the beautiful work of Twigs & Honey . Owner and designer Myra Callan always amazes us with a constantly evolving array of creative, whimsical and romantic pieces… There’s truly something to suit the taste of every girl we work with.
Today I’m thrilled to share a few gorgeous items from Myra’s latest campaign, as well our recent, in-depth conversation. After a quick glimpse at the beautiful images below, it’s easy to see that Twigs & Honey is something special. So to sweeten the pot a bit, we asked Myra about the development of her line, her daily muses and inspirations, and how the whole creative concept came to fruition. I’m always so intrigued by the “how you got there” questions – and I think you will love her answers.
Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey How do you believe the Twigs & Honey concept came to fruition?
I grew up in Oregon and was smitten with wildlife and nature from the beginning. I ended up pursuing an educational path that would foster these interests. I suppose I’d always liked pretty little things and fashion as well and my two different major interests in life came to a head while planning my 9-8-7 wedding to now hubby, Matt. After the wedding, I was still on such a creative high that I didn’t want to let that completely go and creating Twigs & Honey really allowed me to never let it go!
Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey Can you share some tidbits about your daily life?
I like running, yes like it, but I don’t have much time lately for that. I love going to the movies and the bookstore with my hubby. I enjoy gardening and playing with our Siberian husky, Indy. I also go out with family for some stress relieving target shooting from time to time {I’m sure that’s a surprise!}. My favorite movie of all-time is Labyrinth, though the recent Inception is a close second. I’ve also seen every episode of The Office at least once, emphasis on “at least”…

What inspired you to develop your brand?
I was inspired to develop Twigs & Honey by the enjoyment I received through creating pieces. I loved the idea of creating little bits of art you could wear and sharing it with the world. I also loved providing pieces for individuals wanting something unique and lovely.
Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey What was missing in the market that Twigs & Honey fulfills?
When I first began my Etsy shop in January of 2008, there weren’t a ton of head piece makers on Etsy and Etsy itself wasn’t that old. I literally did an extensive search through the site to make sure that what I was creating was going to be new, fresh and original and not just what was already being done. After that, I wanted to provide a line of products that would be vintage and nature inspired but completely modern interpretations focusing on fine materials and craftsmanship. As time went on and more and more people started to jump on the head piece making bandwagon, I kept moving my brand into one that focused on technique and uniqueness. Most of my flowers (with the exception of some small vintage and reproduction vintage flowers) are completely made from scratch. Most of my pieces are hand sewn with good old needle and thread. I don’t’ even own a hot glue gun. I wanted to provide a product to the market that was lovely, stylish, unique and well-made and that’s about it!
Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey What initially sparked the Twigs & Honey concept?
I began making small hair accessories in junior high because something always fascinated me about hair pretties and being 13, I couldn’t afford any from the store. I kept it as a hobby for years and for our 2007 wedding, I decided to DIY my hair piece and those of my bridesmaids (along with the boutonnieres and bouquets). I received a very positive response from friends and family and loved creating them so much that I decided to launch a little Etsy shop in January of 2008. After I made a sale in the first few days, I was hooked and things took off from there.

What do you like most about your job?
Twigs & Honey gives me a creative outlet. I am a busy body and I have so many ideas bursting out of my head that Twigs & Honey really gives me an arena to let all that creative energy out into the world. I love that everyday is different. Most days are crammed with work from the early morning into the late night and right through the weekends, but it doesn’t feel like “work” since it’s really a passion. I also love all the talented and sweet people I get to work with and meet. I feel very lucky!
Monday Musings with Myra Callan of Twigs + Honey Where to you draw everyday inspiration from?I draw inspiration from just about everywhere. More objectively, I gather a ton of inspiration every morning from my favorite blogs. More abstractly, I gather inspiration from the world around me. I love the environment and studied it for years so it’s hard not to have that influence my designs. A couple times a month or more, I dive into a stack of magazines at the bookstore and I love great wardrobe in movies and runway fashion. I like looking at high fashion dresses and blouses and then thinking to myself, “How can I make that into a head piece?”

Stylist Selection | Tracy Reese Spinning Lace Dress

Stylist Selection | Tracy Reese Spinning Lace Dress We’ve got a new feature here on Merci: Stylist Selection. We figure, we’re out there shopping and buying for brides and our other private clients anyway, so why not share the love a tiny bit? We’ll start with one of our favorites of the holiday season…
Tracy Reese’s Spinning Lace Dress has received MAJOR buyer brownie points this month. There doesn’t seem to be a store that’s not stocking it, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love it.
The demure {but tres-easy to vamp up} frock comes in two colorways, cream and black. The cream seems to be the winner {read: we’re already seeing broken size runs in Saks, L&Ts, etc due to a recent shout-out by New York Magazine’s style editors}. The black, eh. We’re going cream all the way with this gorgeous piece.
The cream colorway is perfect for holiday parties, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers {yadda yadda}, but not just because it’s versatile, cute, and a touch retro… It’s really all about the color and the construction.
In person, this feminine frock has a substance well beyond it’s $288 price tag. The lace is soft and tactile, with a weight worthy of a vintage 50s find. Dress it demure with pearls and a cardi, or go a bit more tongue-in-cheek with metallic booties, chunky cuffs and thrift store clip-ons and voila! You’ve got yourself a versatile look that will take you past the holidays, through the winter and into early spring. J’adore.
Stylist tip: The cream Spinning Lace Dress by Tracy Reese is still stocked as a full size run at Anthropologie .
