BRIDES New York: The Best Spots to Shop for a Vintage Engagement Ring

If you’re not about to inherit your great Aunt Bess’ heirlooms any time soon, how do you go about searching out a special vintage engagement ring that suits your taste and style?

We’ve rounded up the top places to shop vintage (rings, that is!) in NYC . Check out the below jewelers to learn all about their baubles, as well as some tips on how to find “the one” vintage ring you’ll love forever.

BRIDES New York: The Best Spots to Shop for a Vintage Engagement Ring

Erstwhile Jewelry (Above)
Founded on five generations of jewelers with a unique family story spanning from Russia to Manhattan, owner Jared Klusner prides himself on finding uniquely crafted vintage rings, with an eye for 19th-century Victorian, turn-of-the-century Edwardian, French Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and 40s styles with high quality stones. They seek pieces that work for a modern lifestyle, but also have strong roots in the design motifs of the past. In fact, Erstwhile Jewelry inspires clients to mix and match vintage rings with their contemporary pieces. In addition to curating vintage rings, the jewelers design and make their own collection using vintage stones and recycled metals, such as their “The One For You” ring, which is inspired by 18th- and 19th-century designs, and features a vintage cushion-cut diamond in the center.

Fresh Summer Wedding in Peach and Gray

Hey guys! So in case you're unaware, I'm actually on vacation this week. My husband and I arrived in Belize yesterday for a week-long babymoon :) Don't worry, I'm not actually working right now; I just prepared ahead of time! So this week's publication schedule is going to be a little bit different in that instead of my regular Bridal Fitness and Picks on Paper posts, I'm doing all gorgeous weddings and engagement sessions for the remainder of the week. So no worries, I didn't leave you hangin' ;)

Today's wedding feature is a great example of how you can create an absolutely beautiful wedding with just the right, select details and an amazing photography team to document it. It also doesn't hurt that the couple, Chelsea and Travis, are quite adorable. When I first laid eyes on these photos, I actually thought it was a styled shoot with models! The bride is absolutely stunning, and showcases a unique sense of style in her Grecian style Vera Wang for David's Bridal wedding dress and hair accessories.

Chelsea and Travis were married this past summer on August 4th at the Barber Park Event Center in Boise, Idaho. The day was skillfully photographed by both Tana Photography and Yellowline Photography , and coordinated by Bliss Events . I especially love the photos of the couple inside and around the antique blue automobile!

For their day, the couple wanted a "Fresh, clean summery look," selecting a pretty peach and gray color palette with peach gerbera daisies and queen anne's lace for their floral accents. With 150 guests in attendance, Chelsea and Travis were married beneath a gazebo in the late afternoon on a warm summer day. After the ceremony, the reception commenced with food, drinks and dancing, followed by an after party at a family friend's home well into the evening. Guests left the wedding with a fun soundtrack for the day, made up of songs that Chelsea and Travis personally selected.

As for advice, Chelsea offered the following guidance to fellow brides. "I would definitely suggest getting a wedding coordinator. My coordinator was so amazing and kept everything running smoothly. I also would suggest that if you are having a summer wedding, to have it a little bit later in the afternoon and allow for the sun to go down. I think that creates more of a fun dance party-type atmosphere. Also, buck tradition and do things that make sense to you, like I had my brother as a bridesman instead of a traditional groomsmen. Make your wedding your own!"

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

Diaper bags are a necessity for the baby-on-the-go , but why is it that most seem to channel the mommy pack-mule look? While practicality is obviously of the essence, nothing kills my look more than lugging a knapsack over my shoulder when I’ve already cut corners in the blowout, shower, and makeup departments.

I often tell my friends and styling clients to put a great (somewhat splurge-worthy) diaper bag on their registry. It’s a gift your non-mom girlfriends will be excited to chip in on together (especially if they’re petrified to buy you a breast pump)!

Here are some of my favorite springtime diaper bags that marry fashion and function for the stylish mom-to-be…

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

The Eliza Metallic Linen Satchel from MZ Wallace , $395, seems like a splurge until you realize its versatility. This silvery street-chic tote has plenty of fast-access zip pockets for wipes, sanitizers, and pacifiers, but when your little one has outgrown the bag, the spacious silhouette also accommodates tablets and laptops for the back-to-work momma.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

The Timi + Leslie Charlie diaper bag is a stylish steal at only $160. Constantly toted around by Jessica Alba and other chic celeb moms, the eight piece set comes in seven trendy colors that work with nearly every outfit. I’m loving the transitional mustard yellow tone for spring!

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

Marc by Marc Jacobs is known for their punchy prints and illustrations—and the $298 Crosby-Elizababy Diaper Bag is no exception. The dot design makes a playful statement while also concealing spills and stains specific to the toddler set.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

This Skip Hop Duo in Limited Edition French Stripe , $70, boasts all the assets of SkipHop’s renowned Duo bag in a crisp, contemporary stripe that your husband won’t mind toting around, too. It also comes with a matching changing pad—hey, at least your kid can be coordinated, even if you’re not wearing matching socks!

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

The Storksak Color Block Diaper Bag , $142, has a sophisticated prep look that sleekly conceals its many compartments. Need some outfit inspiration? The pop of navy and orange works with basic playground jeans, a comfy white tee, and your fave Sperrys.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

From the flirty ruffles to the crisp stripes, everything about this Bella Tunno bag reminds me of a classic sundress. It opens to reveal a water repellent Kelly green liner and oodles of pockets. At $74, it’s at a great giftable price point, too!

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry The Pretty Nylon Eliza-Baby Diaper Bag from Marc by Marc Jacobs, $298, has been on the baby gear scene for a while, but the new Rip Tide (shown) and Banana Creme colorways are awesome additions for summer beach days and breezy getaways with your little ones.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

A Ju-Ju Bee B.F.F. Legacy Collection bag , $180, is not only graphic and cute, it is designed with more thoughtful touches than the obsessively organized mom could ever imagine.  Each comes with a memory-foam shoulder strap, Thinsulate by 3M insulated bottle pockets, and Agion®-protected linings that reduce the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

Rebecca Minkoff’s Jude Diaper Bag , $395, is a seasonless staple that channels all that cool-girl edge you had before baby. I love it for the exposed zippers and oversized hardware, not to mention its sleek (wipe-and-go) fabric.

10 Splurge-Worthy Diaper Bags to Add to Your Registry

I know…but before you guys roll your eyes at me, hear me out. The Louis Vuitton Neverfull is not just a diaper bag, it’s a lifer bag. As in, you buy it now and literally use it for the rest of your life. (Or at least that’s how I rationalized it—it’s been my go-to diaper/work/everything bag since I had my daughter.) While the Neverfull is definitely a splurge (and falls more into the push-present versus registry category!), it will carry your essentials long after you’ve outgrown the diaper bag days! Customize it with your monogram (or baby’s), and add a SugarBooger diaper bag organizer to keep all your gear in check.

Say It With Diamonds (And 25 Other Gems)

With the holidays upon us, we’re searching high and low for perfectly styled gifts! Erica Weiner’s new collection of acrostic jewelry has revamped the Victorian language of gems with the Acrostic Alphabet parure and the Secret Message Acrostic Ring .  We love her simply beautiful pieces and can’t stop thinking of secret messages to share with our loved ones! Say It With Diamonds (And 25 Other Gems)

Acrostic rings date from the Victorian era and include secret phrases such as “DEAREST” (diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire, turquoise). Erica Weiner , one of New York City’s leading antique jewelry specialists, has breathed new life into this template.  These sweet and dainty pieces are perfect for everyday wear and their hidden messages are endlessly customizable.    The Acrostic Alphabet collection of rings, necklaces and earrings, consists of 26 stones, each representing a letter of the alphabet; “J” (jade),  “D” (diamond), etc… Say It With Diamonds (And 25 Other Gems)

The Secret Message Acrostic Ring sets up to 23 gems in a 14K gold band that “spell” any word or message – a “LOVELY” holiday gift! Prices range from $100 for a single earring to $2,175 for a 23-gem piece.  We “ADORE” these collections and can’t wait to create our own mysteriously whimsical pieces! Merci New York for Madame Mathilde Clutches

Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of styling an intimate editorial shoot on a white sand beach in Mexico with our Merci New York for Madame Mathilde clutches . Lucky for me, the lovely Petronella Lugemwa photographed the collection, and her resulting images were – as always – totally stunning! Take a peek!
Merci New York for Madame Mathilde Clutches Our Petite Gold Leather Clutch adds just the right amount of sparkle to a wedding look, and it comes with a chic little chain that can be put on post-wedding.  I love wearing it with a little black dress for cocktail parties, or even with a tank and jeans for a chic, casual look.  Plus, you can choose between two different brooch options, making it an awesome bridesmaid gift, too.  {And there’s also the choice of silver or black leather, of course}.

Merci New York for Madame Mathilde Clutches Our larger, Classic Coral {vegan!} Leather Clutch is AMAZING for the honeymoon… Or truly, any colorful summer outfit. The material is durable, yet chicly dusted with flecks of gold to show off the textured “scales” of the bag. It’s one of my personal favorites!
Merci New York for Madame Mathilde Clutches Looking for a little “something blue” for your wedding wardrobe? We first designed this Petite Turquoise Faux Leather Python Clutch with our sixties-inspired Audrey Brooch, and think it has a decidedly ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ feel. However, girls who love art-deco style can opt for the above Greta Brooch instead – It’s the same bag, but topped with a Gatsby-esque brooch that would put Daisy Buchanan to shame {and pairs so well with all your deco-dent accessories}.

Vegan leather clutches come in two sizes, as well as summery coral and sunflower yellow shades!
Merci New York for Madame Mathilde Clutches

So that’s a sneak peek of just a few clutches in the Spring Merci New York for Madame Mathilde line… Be sure to swing by our Merci New York online shop to see the whole collection, {we hope you share your favorites!},  and check out Petronella’s site for more of her oh-so-pretty photos!

xx,

Ask The Experts: Engagement Ring Style with Penny Preville

While engagements happen all year round, the New Year tends to be the most popular time to pop that question!  Today we are thrilled to welcome Penny Preville {and her gorgeous rings!} to the Merci New York blog!  She’s answered our questions on ring style, sets, and trends…so take a peek at these beautifully designed bling and get inspired to hint to your man about your likes and dislikes!  We’re excited to see what your favorites are!

Ask The Experts: Engagement Ring Style with Penny Preville

These rings are gorgeous!  What made you interested in engagement rings?

Penny: When my eldest son Skyler became serious about getting engaged, it was really important for me to be the one who designed it! I poured my heart and soul into designing the perfect ring to represent the two of them, Skyler and Mara, as a couple. Now, the “ Mara Ring ” {below} is one of our bestsellers! This inspired me to continue to personally design rings for family members, close friends and to be inspired by love stories from the past. Today, each has become a part of my bridal line, named for the woman who inspired it. This way, anyone who chooses Penny Preville for such an important life milestone as their engagement, is instantly part of our family.

That’s so unique!  While each girl has her own style, how you would describe your overall engagement ring style?

Penny: I would say my rings reflect my personal style: feminine, romantic, with a vintage-inspired feel. Brides tell me they want a ring that’s as unique and as special as she is, which is why I pay such close attention to detail through the use of engraving and detailed milgrain and filigree.  This way, each ring is unique for its intricacies, but still comfortable and wearable everyday.

Ask The Experts: Engagement Ring Style with Penny Preville How does a girl figure out her true engagement ring style?  Is it better to stay on trend or stick to the classics?

Penny:Well, if you’re anything like me, you’ve been ripping pages out of magazines of your dream ring for years!  Now that you think you know what you want, it’s important to try them on to see what looks great on you.  You’ll be surprised, what you think you love on a page might be very different when you try it on. My recommendation would be to avoid trends. Find something truly unique, but still classic. Think long-term. You are going to married for a long time and you want your ring to withstand the test of time.

What about the guys, is there an etiquette they should follow when shopping with their bride to be?  Is it better to bring your girlfriend along to find her dream ring or be traditional and get the advice of her family and friends and surprise her?

Penny: The best advice is don’t surprise her!  Take her shopping to learn what she likes and then you can go back armed with all your newfound knowledge and design the perfect ring. If you really want to try to keep it a secret, definitely ask her mom, sister and friends since they’ve probably talked about it.  Also, listen to her, she’s probably hinting to you what she wants. I read a statistic that something like 85% of women hint what they want! So guys…listen up and pay attention!  You can visit www.pennypreville.com to visit our great ring gallery and get inspired.

Ask The Experts: Engagement Ring Style with Penny Preville

There are so many different style rings out there…what engagement ring trends are your favorite?  Different cuts?  Colored stones?  Vintage inspired sets?

Penny: While I love classic diamond engagement rings, we’ve seen a trend of celebrities choosing colored stones for their rings.  So, we’ve had fun designing some beautiful engagement rings using sapphires and other gemstones. It’s a great look!  But, I think my favorite style is a vintage-inspired ring.  It’s delicate, romantic and feels right for a lifelong journey together as husband and wife. I’m a romantic, what can I say!

So we know your style and different cuts, but if you could create your own…what is your dream ring?!

Penny: My dream ring would absolutely HAVE to include my favorite color blue and my favorite, cushion cut! If blue diamonds weren’t so rare, that would be my dream.  But, a beautiful rich sapphire would work too! It would be mounted in a simple setting with a thin diamond pave halo around it to enhance its sparkle. I also love when a ring has a beautiful detail on the sides and shanks.

Ask The Experts: Engagement Ring Style with Penny Preville Since we are currently going through engagement season, what is your best advice for those couples who are shopping for their ring?

Penny: Take the stress and guessing out of this process, and shop together! Make a day of it, treat her to a nice lunch before visiting stores to try a variety of options to see what she’s drawn to and what shapes flatter her. Listen to her hints, she’ll let you know what she wants! And my favorite tip here is to take note of her ring size so it’s a perfect fit when you do buy it. If you need help locating a retailer in your area, you can visit http://www.pennypreville.com/find-a-store for a list of great stores.

We’ve seen some amazing rings this year, what trends for rings do you foresee for 2013?

Penny:

-Deco-inspired engagement rings

-Emerald cut rings

-Colored stone engagement rings (sapphires, emeralds)

- Penny Preville will be debuting a new line of bridal rings in Spring/Summer 2013.

Stylish Vintage Wedding in Charleston

I am so beyond excited to share this stylish vintage wedding with you guys, I can't even stand it! It's one of those weddings that just seemed to come together perfectly. All of the details were carefully planned and arranged just perfectly by the ever-so-stylish bride, Holly. "I absolutely LOVE details in all aspects of my life, whether it's in my home decor, birthday gifts, events that I've planned, or my own personal style. Everything I do, I want there to be thought and purpose, and I wanted our wedding to be no exception to that," said Holly. From Holly's black lace gloves and sparkling brooch bouquet, to the bridesmaids' tulle skirts and the groom's seersucker suit, Holly took every opportunity to show off her great taste and distinctive sense of style on the big day.

Holly married her high school sweetheart of ten years, Rian last May beneath a gorgeous aisle oak trees at Legare Waring House in Charleston, South Carolina. The couple took every opportunity to integrate their sweet love story into their wedding celebration. "One of the ideas behind getting married in old Charleston and incorporating a vintage style into our wedding was based on the fact that we have every intention of growing old together," said Holly. "Our 'Save the Dates' read, 'It's About Time!' too! Speaking of which, I'm a HUGE fan of their Save the Dates designed by the bride's sister, Kat of Kat Phillips Designs .

Stylish Vintage Wedding in Charleston

As you'll soon see, there are so many fabulous vintage details to love from this day, all of which were skillfully captured by Joshua Aaron Photography . Hope you enjoy as much as I have!

Get Set for Summer with Hats That Give Back

If you’re heading to the beach this Memorial Day weekend, chances are you’re packing your bag with a great bikini, cute little maxi dress, and some sunnies to complete your look.  But what about a great beach hat?  I’m always in the market for one… A fab hat is a summertime staple that not only looks chic, but also protects your pretty little noggin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Get Set for Summer with Hats That Give Back

1. Chloe ; 2. Jackie ; 3. Jill ; 4. Olga ; 5. Lucy .

This month, my quest for a killer sun hat came to a halt. I had the chance to partner with Hat Attack to create a one-of-a-kind design that’s great for beach, pool, garden parties, and all kinds of summertime fun. Better yet – it’s being sold for a cause on their site … all proceeds benefit the Skin Cancer Foundation.

How did it work? Hat Attack rounded up their favorite “style mavens” {there are also awesome styles from the ladies at Refinery 29, The Today Show, Cosmopolitan and more}, then told us to get creative… I chose a uber-dramtic floppy hat that screamed “poolside glam” and paired with with some graphic and gold trim.  I think it will be awesome with a black bikini.

Happy {sun-safe} shopping!
