Referred to appropriately last week as a “mixtape for aliens,” the Voyager Golden Record was launched into space on two separate spacecrafts in 1977 and intended as the best representation of the diversity of life and culture on Earth, compiled for the sake of any intelligent extraterrestrial life that might encounter the crafts in their journeys across the galaxy.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign launched last week, which has already surpassed its pledge goal, we’ll now have the chance to purchase our own copy of the actual Voyager Golden Record, with the tantalizing promise that we’ll be able to “experience the historic interstellar message for extraterrestrials the way it was meant to be played.”

The Voyager Golden Record: 40th Anniversary Edition will be an elaborate box set that also includes a book featuring the images that were encoded onto the disc, as well as essays and information relating to the Voyager mission.

“The Voyager Golden Record contains the story of Earth expressed in sounds, images, and science: Earth's greatest music from myriad cultures and eras, from Bach and Beethoven to Blind Willie Johnson and Chuck Berry, Senegalese percussion to Solomon Island panpipes,” the Kickstarter says.

The discs were put together for the Voyager crafts by a special committee, which saw musicologist Alan Lomax working alongside beloved astronomer Carl Sagan. In addition to the music, the discs also featured greetings in 55 different human languages; audio of various Earth sounds such as rain, dogs, laughter and machinery; the sounds of one whale language; plus more than 100 images depicting the human race—all encoded in analog.
