How to Choose the Perfect Tent

Choose your tent

When you are investing in a tent, don’t just go to the camping store and get the cheapest option, because chances are, it’s cheap for a reason. You may think “what’s so hard about picking a tent”, but there are more things than you would think that should be taken into consideration. Every camper is different and you need to get a tent that fits your camping style.

How to Choose the Perfect Tent

The Size of the Tent

If you are a family of five, you need to take that into consideration when picking a tent. Most tents that you see on the market will advertise as being a two-person, four-person, six-person and so on. This is usually a guideline for people who travel light and want to sleep side by side in the smallest tent possible for the size of the party, and there is little to no room left for personal gear or any other storage space. This rating method is great for backpackers, but not so great for the family camping trip. A two-person (or 8-person) tent does also not take into consideration that you may have a very tall person in your party, so you need to make sure that the tent has a length that will comfortably fit the largest person in your camping party.

Extra tent space for storage

Consider how long you go camping for and how much stuff you tend to bring like fishing gear, hiking gear, coolers, clothes and camping furniture. Do you sleep on matts or do you bring cots for more comfort? These are all things to consider when purchasing your tent.

How to Choose the Perfect Tent

Tent ventilation

Depending on how many people you are going to be inside your tent, you will need to take into consideration how the tent is going to be ventilated. Packing 6 people in a tent can be quite claustrophobic and unbearable if you don’t have proper airflow in the tent. A quality canvas wall tent to fit the whole family is the perfect option and comes with sizable windows and doors for proper ventilation. When looking at the larger family tents, take into consideration how heavy and difficult it is to set up and take down.

How to Choose the Perfect Tent Consider the weather when choosing a tent

Now that fall is approaching and the nights are getting cooler, consider how you are going to stay warm in your tent at night. The larger the tent, the harder it is to heat. A bigger tent can also be less stable in high winds, so choose a tent that has been weather tested in all conditions so you don’t end up flying away in the night.

Denver Tent Company has worked for over 100 years to perfect the camping experience with our flagship canvas wall tent. This is the best wall tent in the business with quality fabrics and years of experience in the field, so we know that our tents can stand up to the toughest of weather conditions. Mom, Dad, Why Do the Leaves Change Color?

Feature Image of Mount Rainier National Park
Photo Credit: Nation Park Service - by Sue Russell

It’s official, with Labor Day come and gone summer has also set and we begin to move towards the fall. The days get shorter and the nights longer. We’re starting to put on a few more layers of clothing, and we can feel the summer tan begin to fade away. But before you skip ahead and start planning your winter ski trip, take a moment to enjoy the ever changing colors of the leaves all around you.

No one does Fall better than Colorado. It’s an incredible time of year to take the family camping. You still get warm days for the kids to play, hike, explore, fish and swim, but the cooler nights scare away the bugs making the campfire dinners much more pleasant. And the changing of the leaves from green to golden, to brown, orange, red, yellow…you name it… it’s a sight to be seen.

Mom, Dad, Why Do the Leaves Change Color?

Why do the leaves change color?

If you have kids, you know that they like asking questions. Questions are great, kids should ask all the questions in the world, because how else are they going to learn, but there is nothing more frustrating to a parent than a kid asking you about how the world works, and you have no idea how to answer. So in preparation for the turning of the leaves and a whole new blanket of color that will sweep over Colorado this fall, here’s the quick answer to a question you’ll probably get from your kids very soon: Mom, dad, why are they leaves changing color? Where did the green go?

Mom, Dad, Why Do the Leaves Change Color?

You’re probably thinking, “oh, that has something to do with photosynthesis…or something”. Well, yes, you’re right, but that’s not going to help your kid much. So here’s what you say:

Photosynthesis is the process that helps plant turn light and carbon dioxide into food so they can grow big and strong. Inside the leaves is something called chlorophyll, which is green, and in the summer there is a lot of sunlight and water so the green chlorophyll covers the whole leaf making the leaves green during the summer months. This is when the plants and trees are busy making all the food they need so that they can survive through the winter months.

Mom, Dad, Why Do the Leaves Change Color?

When fall and winter arrives, there is less sunlight and water to help the plant produce food. The trees will therefore rest and live off of the food they make during the summer. Much like a bear hibernates, or a chipmunk will save up nuts to get through the winter, the plant will also save up food for the long cold dark winter months. Because the trees stop producing food the green chlorophyll will disappear and we will begin to see colors like reds, yellows, browns and oranges shine through.

Here at Goosewing Ranch, we combine the lifestyle of ranching in the Wyoming wilderness with many of the modern refinements that make your visit with us especially enjoyable.

At 7,400 feet, the valley is the host to some of North America’s most spectacular game: elk, moose, mountain sheep, antelope, bear, eagles, geese, cranes, and much more, not to mention fantastic scenery. The Gros Ventre River, home to native cutthroat trout, runs through the meadows of our historic ranch.

Our Jackson Hole dude ranch offers comfortable lodging in eight private guest cabins and three larger two bedroom cabins for bigger families. Complimentary limited wireless Internet is provided throughout the Ranch. With its large stone fireplace, the main lodge serves as a central gathering place for dining or relaxing. A loft with a pool table and television overlooks the main room. Fireplaces, propane-stoves, a hot tub, sauna and swimming pool add to the cozy atmosphere. A large selection of beer, wine, and liquor compliments an eclectic, seasonal menu.

We invite you to come share this corner of North America’s wildest country just as it has been for over a hundred years – a working ranch reborn as an isolated retreat deep in the Gros Ventre River Valley.

There is a bounty of activities to enjoy while staying at our dude ranch in Jackson Hole. Horseback riding is our main focus during summer months. We cater to all riding ability levels and will match the appropriate horse to each guest. Fly-fishing is excellent in the area. We can provide instruction on our stocked trout pond and section of the river that flows through the property with advanced notice. Take advantage of what our area has to offer, by taking a white water rafting trip down the snake river or heading into the town of Jackson to see a rodeo (off ranch activities not included in packages).

Our dude ranch in Jackson Hole accommodates approximately 35 guests per week, and all accommodations are in private cabins. Each cabin has a rustic, yet cozy and comfortable decor. Meals are family style in the main lodge, and we can accommodate dietary restrictions with advanced notice.

The Smart Camper’s Voice / Entry 21

Keeping up with our series on great places to camp per state, we will take you to the second biggest state in the US. As always we bring our readers three great places to setup camp although with this state we will consider doing a second part. We are clearly talking about Texas, The Lone Star State. With an extension of 268,820 square miles, it just shies to Alaska in it’s vast size. A great deal of American history has taken place in Texas from El Alamo and Davy Crockett to the final battle of the Civil War which was fought near Brownsville.

The Smart Camper’s Voice / Entry 21

Friendship

That is the motto of Texas and anybody who visits will testify that it is true. Texans are kind and friendly people always open to conversation and comradely. Following are three great locations to camp in Texas.

Big Bend National Park: Far away in West Texas lies Big Bend. A true testament to the pass of time due to it’s sea fossils and dinosaur bones. The National Park Service operates three developed front country campgrounds with almost 200 campsites for which you will need a lot of time to fully explore. From bird watching to fishing, the to do list is quite extensive in Big Bend.

Lake O’ The Pines: A true dream for any recreational fisher. With about 18.700 acres of water it is safe to say that the fishing is good. Surrounded by amazing pine forests, Lake O’ The Pines is also home to boating, camping, bird watching and much more. With 4 major campgrounds that hold over 200 campsites (tent and RV), you will not go wrong coming here.

Shooting Tips for Hunting

Rifle Skills Will Make You a Better Hunter

Elevating your shooting skills will help you get the best results for this hunting season, so here are some great tips to achieve that.

Shooting Tips for Hunting1. Focus During Practice

Good shooting starts in your mind. Simply pulling a trigger is not the way to go. Olympic gold medalist Lones Wigger says it like this: “Make each shot count. When I practice, every shot gets my best effort, down to the smallest detail. Consistency matters. Such focus is exhausting. When I can no longer concentrate, I quit for the day.

Call your shots before you see where they have hit. When bullets hit where you predicted, rejoice. If didn’t predict well, practice, practice, practice until you make it.

2. Work on Improving Your Positions

The best and most affordable way to practice several shooting positions is to do it with a rimfire rifle that estimates the weight and feel of a deer rifle. There are three sitting positions you should try: crossed-ankle, crossed-leg, and with your knees tent-like, comfortably spread, heels grounded. Just remember that whether sitting or kneeling, bone-on-bone support is the key element.

3. Master the Sling

No matter if you are sitting, or kneeling, it is always good to use a sling. Contrary a carrying strap; a sling has an adjustable loop, and it hangs loosely from your arm to the rear support. A leather sling is always a better option than one made out of nylon. We all know that nylon is cheaper – it will slip. The “hasty sling” is a technique that has been used off-hand with a strap or sling wrapped around your arm, which can serve to decrease tremors and improve your shooting skills.

Shooting Tips for Hunting4. Aim small; miss small

Shoot only if under current conditions you can make a lethal hit 90% of the time. Also take into consideration that an entire animal is too large a target. Narrow your focus to a place on the shoulders or ribs. If you aim small; you miss small. Focusing on a single smaller spot gives you a better chance of hitting your mark. Don’t get distracted by how big the animal is, but focus on how sharp your shooting must be.

5. Fire Only When You Are Fully Ready

Think before you fire. Ask yourself, “Is this as close as I can get to the animal?” Closer is always better. Most hunters have more time than they actually use. While unnecessary delay can be costly, getting your rifle to settle before shooting is crucial.

Shooting Tips for Hunting6. Choose a Good Resting Place

When you are out on a hunting trip, the way you rest during the night is a crucial component. You can’t focus and maintain good balance if you are tired from a bad night sleep, which is why choosing the best hunting tent for you is so important. At the Denver Tent Company, we have the very best canvas options for you. Visit our website and get the tent you deserve for this hunting season.

How to tailgate in style

Are you ready for football season?

Besides food, snack and of course, beer, there are a few more things that will make your tailgate party stand out amongst the rest. Thursday, September 4th, marked the opening game of the 2014 NFL football season. Ariana Grande killed the national anthem at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle, WA, before the Seattle Seahawks followed up their incredible 2013 super bowl victory with a win over the Green Bay Packers. And thus, the 2014 NFL season has begun. Let the tailgating parties begin.

How to tailgate in style

The tailgate – a definition

This is like Coachella for sports fans. One big parking lot, a lot of good old American artery clogging food, smoke from the BBQ, banners and flags and team paraphernalia lining the stadium parking lot, where the echoes of the game can be heard from a million radios and portable TV sets, and everyone is there root, root, rooting for the home team.

Display the team colors

The food is obviously a big part of the tailgating experience, but this is also where you get to go crazy and show off just how big of a fan you are. And since everyone there is trying to one up each other in the fanatic department, being creative with the team colors (food coloring is a great way to turn your punch or your cupcakes into a home team delicacy), banners, flags and whatever else you can think of to prove that you are the #1 fan.

Make yourself at home

Tailgating starts before the game and depending on the outcome, can last for a while after the game, because you have to celebrate a victory. No one just packs up and goes straight home. So for a great tailgate party, make sure your set up has all the amenities of home, because you are going to be there for a while. And, the more at home you look at your tailgating station, the more you are signifying to your tailgating neighbors that this ain’t your first tailgate and everyone else needs to just watch and learn. The biggest and most elaborate tailgate set up, usually tells people that you are the biggest fan. Go big, or go home, right?!

Custom made fabric from Denver Tent Company

The Denver Tent Company can custom make any banner, awning, event tent, pop up tent or canopy to enhance your tailgating experience. True fans won’t settle for just the generic team paraphernalia, why not hit up the Denver Tent Company and see how we can personalize your team paraphernalia and make you stand out among the rest. Be creative with your fanaticism. With our warehouse right here in Denver, Colorado and a team of skilled sewers and constructionists, there is nothing we can’t do with a piece of fabric. Call today , and start this football season off with a bang.

Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Fire

Look Up!

If you’ve been looking up at the sky you may or may not have noticed an increase in what looks like fireballs shooting from the sky. If you haven’t notices, then don’t be alarmed, it’s not going to hurt anyone and we’re not about to send Bruce Willis into space to save the world, but it is an incredible sight to see and you can enjoy it for the rest of the month. All you need is a good, unobstructed view of the sky.

Perseid annual meteor shower

There’s still a few days left to experience this year’s Perseid “champion fireball” meteor shower, which NASA boast could shoot between 30 and 40 meteors an hour. If you haven’t already seen it, then you still have a chance as it should be continuing to shoot off fireballs for the rest of August, although the amount will be reduced. Experts are even saying that these meteors bursting from the sky will outshine the giant super moons that we saw this summer.

Perseid occurs annually when the earth passes through Comet Swift-Turtles debris stream. Once this debris and dust collides with out atmosphere a fireball effect is produced, much to the awe of those of us watching from the ground. The sky really is alive and kicking, all you have to do is look up.Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Fire

Get out of the city and find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, leave the city lights behind and enjoy natures wonder above. Sit back and let your eyes adjust to the dark, don’t use a telescope as meteors could come from any direction and you are best served to use the naked eye.

The Smart Camper’s Voice / Entry 3

This week we are going to follow up on our state’s reviews of great camping sites. With winter on it’s way and autumn already on us, we are going to focus more on Southern States for a while. This due to the fact that a lot of national parks or wildlife refugees are closed for the season.  Early snowfalls will block access roads and unfortunately man power to clear them is not cheap. So lets take a look further south and enjoy the great outdoors and the whole camping experience while still not getting your bottom frozen.

The Smart Camper’s Voice / Entry 3

Land of Enchantment

Bordering Colorado to the north, Arizona to it’s west, the Lone Star State at it’s east flank, New Mexico is truly the Land of Enchantment. Land of rich heritage due to it’s Hispanic ancestry, New Mexico is the 5th most extensive state. With this said, you can now imagine the amazing camping possibilities that this beautiful state offers. Lets look into some of the best camping and outdoor areas New Mexico has to offer.

White Sands National Monument: A true and unique site for anybody and a once in a lifetime opportunity for any photographer. 275 square miles of dunes made out of gypsum sand makes it the biggest in it’s kind. With ten amazing campsites, enjoy the stars in the dessert night in a way you have never experienced them before. Reservations cannot be done due to missile testing on the adjacent missile range.

Santa Fe National Park: Established in 1915, this beautiful park has elevations ranging from 5,300 feet to 13,103 feet. Due to this fact, the area offers an amazing range of activities as well as campsites. Consisting of five different districts, you will be able to find relaxing natural hot springs in Jemez Ranger District to the lush vegetation found on Coyote Ranger District. With over 25 camping sites, there is no way to go wrong.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park: If water sports or fishing is your thing, this is the place to go. With over 173 developed campsites, the possibilities are endless. Pristine lakes will be the delight and the activities allowed go from motorized and not motorized boating to kayak and canoeing. It’s name comes from an elephant-shaped butte located at the head of the dam.

Custom Made Fabrics for the 13th Floor

The 13th floor has a long and spooky legend. The superstitions that goes with the number 13th is so deeply ingrained in our lives, that even in 2014, high-rises are still being built and designed without a 13th floor. But somewhere in the middle of Denver, the 13th floor exists in a space hidden out of sight from the general public. Every October, the 13th floor appears and opens itself up to the public revealing something out of your darkest nightmares. This is Denver’s legendary 13th Floor Haunted House and it is everything you feared it would be. As you are traveling the 13th floor, be careful what you bump into. Around every corner is something that will make you scream and your skin crawl. It is not typically the type of place you will find our custom fabrics, but this is the 13th floor; you never know what you’re going to find in the next room. Tread carefully.

The Smart Camper’s Voice / Entry 9

Holiday season is upon us and Thanksgiving is around the corner. A time to give thanks for your hard work and to celebrate with your loved ones. When conceived it was for the purpose of celebrating a bountiful harvest in face of the harsh winter ahead. Thanksgiving Day has been traced down to a 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the settlers held a feast after a bountiful harvest. Its been almost 400 years since that first Thanksgiving and it is now a major tradition for all US citizens regardless of where they are in the world. A big part of the holiday is it’s dinner. Turkey is the key and all the other-other traditional components such as the gravy, sauce and stuffing bring back memories of years past. The Smart Camper’s Guide would like to challenge you and your family to give this special holiday a twist and take it outdoors.

Camping on Thanksgiving

Our city lives and smartphones have taken away much of the sharing that used to happen at dinner time. We are nowadays more focused on our phones than on our loved ones. For this reason camping on Thanksgiving is a great idea to unite the family and spend some quality time. After setting up camp, the whole family can work on cooking dinner together. Camping sites offer more space than your regular kitchen so the possible cooking methods are more. Heck why not try the infamous deep fried turkey although please be sure to follow all safety measures before attempting it. There is no better way to slow down and be able to contemplate everything that Thanksgiving stands for than camping. After a nice dinner just sit back and relax, roast some marshmallows over the fire with the kids and truly enjoy the beauty of life. Camping is one of the best ways to give thanks to the earth and unite the family. The Smart Camper Voice wishes you and your loved ones a happy Thanksgiving and we hope your grilled turkey comes out tender and juicy!

2014 Fall Outdoor Wedding Trends

Fall is an amazing time for outdoor weddings

The weather is cooler, friends and family are more likely to be available than during the busy summer vacation months, and of course, the colors of fall is a natural awesome backdrop for a romantic wedding setting.

2014 Fall Outdoor Wedding Trends

Use the natural fall colors to accentuate your outdoor wedding

This fall weddings are seeing a much more rustic and natural trend. The golden browns, the bright pops of orange, reds and yellows mixed with the emerald greens as the leaves begin to turn will make the perfect back drop to a romantic, outdoor wedding.

And don’t stop there. Keeping with the all-natural theme, mix in twigs and branches and non-floral elements alongside big bold wildflowers. Your bouquet should look like you just plucked it from a field right before walking down the aisle.

Greenery, leaves, fruits and greens are also big when it comes to the table décor. If you are having your wedding outdoors in the wild, make your wedding match the location.2014 Fall Outdoor Wedding Trends

Foraging for Food in the Wild

Into the woods

Foraging for food has become more and more popular. Going green, living off of the land, never buying frozen food and eating locally grown fruits, veggies and even meat is the way of the future and a way to preserve the land for future generations. But foraging for food isn’t easy, and it is not always obvious what is edible and what isn’t. Here are a few tips to foraging for food and a way to supplement your next camping trip meals. Cause wouldn’t it be cool to pick herbs and spices and a few things to spice up your salad next time you go for a hike through the mountains or forest?

How to get started on foraging for food

First you want to familiarize yourself with the natural weeds, herbs, bushes and trees in your area and try to identify them correctly so that you know how to use them. Just like you have guide books, maps and compasses to guide you through wilderness hikes, you should also have some sort of guide to help you identify the edibles you may come across along the way. Obviously there are things that you want to avoid eating or touching. Just because it looks green and smells inviting, doesn’t mean that it is good for you.

When you do come across something delicious to spice up your next mean, only take what you plan to eat, never take all the plants in a given patch. Leave some for others and leave some to keep the cycle going for seasons to come. And while you are hiking around foraging for food and getting to know your plant environment, if you are munching on something local with seeds, go ahead and throw those seeds back to nature and help keep the cycle going. Don’t ever collect from nature reserves as they are set up specifically to protect wild species, so give them some space to grow.

When to forage for food

Edible weeds are at their peak flavor and aroma right before they start to flower, so this is the perfect time to pick them. They are still good after they flower, but the nutrient and vitamin content is not as plentiful as pre-flowering. However, most flowers have their most intense oil concentration and flavor after the flower buds appear, but before they open.

Try to harvesting early in the morning, after the dew dries but before the heat of the day.

The Smart Camper’s Voice: Relax in the Outdoors

There is Nothing More Relaxing Than the Sound of Nature.

Camping is a great way to relax, but sometimes we may need to be prepared for it. If you are a very active person back in the city, you may need some extra help to re-learn how to unwind and lay back. Here are some great ideas to have in mind for your next camping trip.

The Smart Camper’s Voice: Relax in the OutdoorsDisconnect from Technology

The first and most important thing while camping is you need to get rid of all technology. You may still want to have a phone and GPS system around just in case there is an emergency (though a lot of the times, you won’t have signal), but before getting out of the car, you should take your phone, turn it off, and put it in your backpack.

The Smart Camper’s Voice: Relax in the OutdoorsRead a Good Book

Sometimes, because of our hectic lifestyles, we tend to cast reading aside, but there is a wonderful richness that comes from letting your imagination go and reading a good book. So, next time you go on a camping trip, pick a book and relax.

Relax in a Hammock

You have no idea what napping is really about until you nap on a hammock surrounded by God’s creation, where all you can hear is the soothing sound of nature and your thoughts just become clearer. You can rest, meditate, or just let go of all the stress. Whatever you choose, a hammock is the best place to do it.The Smart Camper’s Voice: Relax in the Outdoors

Play Your Favorite Instrument

Not everyone knows how to play an instrument, but if you do, take it with you. There is something special about the sound of a guitar making harmonies with the wind and birds. It is almost as if they are building a symphony together. If you don’t play any instrument, you can always take some relaxing music with you and just let it play in the background while you eat a nice dinner at sunset.
