As we’ve personally noticed in the recent past, the humble cassette tape is transcending its lack of convenience and durability to make a retro-powered comeback , now serving as inspiration for all manner of specialized synthesizers and novelty coffee tables . A new mini documentary explores the last standing factory in America with its doors still open for servicing this resurgent demand.
“There is a resurgence—the 20- and 30-somethings have discovered analog, and they like it,” says Robert Coverston, chief technician at the National Audio Company, which has been producing cassettes since 1969. Amazingly, the company enjoyed its biggest year ever in 2015.
“There is no question that cassettes are making a comeback.”
